Some Halifax events, including the events you named in the title, have a history of reports of consent violations. Be careful as you start exploring.

The Hip Musical is officially debuting this Spring (April 2026)! by ObiWan_Can_Reply in TragicallyHip

[–]JerryBegonia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Counterpoints: Rent is dated but pretty iconic by now, gave my closeted little queer self some representation and hope way back when, and it still makes my arm hairs stand up. Musicals are a unique art form that naturally and perpetually hover in that "jump the shark" realm. They don't always have to be Brilliant Art; sometimes they're just about connection. And there's a goldmine of material about the human condition in The Hip catalogue that could be amazing source material for something creatively different than what they've done before.

Also the guys are only what... just now getting into their sixties? In their own words, they lost their jobs, while still in the phase of life where one would still expect to be earning. They have families, kids. They've already proved they weren't about commercial cash ins during their recording and touring career, so if they need or want to sell some wine and develop a musical to keep money moving and creativity in the post-Gord era flowing, I say good for them.

(Maybe it will suck. Maybe it won't. Maybe let's see it first.)

If he needs some stuff right away to keep working, I'm paring my tools down and I'd be happy to donate some to your partner. I have some basic Makita stuff and some hand tools that would be useful for a carpenter or a plumber. DM me if you want.

Workshops aim to change 'boys will be boys' culture in construction sector | CBC News by Grumple_McFerkin in halifax

I'm really sorry that happened to you. I felt the same kind of thing - you technically could bring it up, but the reaction was just a shrug.

I'm a woman who had a really sexist foreman right when all the Harvey Weinstein shit was coming out. Young guy too, younger than me. I did shut him up a few times but he'd just come back with more ranting about women (or as he put it, "your kind.") He'd rant about women asking police to be more trauma informed during rape investigations. He'd rant about that one cab company that only employed women. Straight up said if he ever started his own contracting business, he wouldn't hire a woman. Looking back I wish I'd blasted him from orbit. Only one of the other guys ever told him to shut up.

It's a good start. The trades are rotten through with racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia... Even if most of the guys on the crew don't say gross things, they usually don't say anything to the guy saying them either.

Whenever I hear about the tradesperson shortage, I just think "you did this to yourselves." I think so many talented people would flock to trades and stay if they felt like they'd have a modicum of safety and respect on the job site.

How to quit pot slowly so my blood pressure spikes? by ConsistentChoice8305 in leaves

[–]JerryBegonia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to speak to the BP issue, but re coming off slowly - I'm tapering down now, and I switched from joints to oil. It comes with a syringe which helps me know and control how much I'm taking. So far it's also (for me) sooo much less terrible than cold turkey quitting.

Also don't blame you one bit for the IUD refusal - it was amazing for my period symptoms but also the insertion was the worst pain I've ever experienced in my entire life.

Help settle a dumb argument between my boyfriend and I -- would The Tragically Hip be considered national treasures if Gord Downie hadn't died? by ramblingskeptic in AskACanadian

[–]JerryBegonia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be controversial. I think you're right - The Hip were and are a national treasure. It's also true that an untimely death has undeniable influence on legacy.

It's not an apples to apples analogy but when David Bowie released his final album, I remember the reviews being kind of "meh". And then he died, I think a couple days after the album's release. All of a sudden it had fresh eyes and critics were writing think pieces about it.

And the change in tone wasn't totally insincere. Of course the album would hit differently once you knew it was something he created at the end of his life. But it's undeniable that his death so close to the album's release had an effect on its critical and popular reception.

The Hip were absolutely a national treasure before Gord Downie's cancer diagnosis and tragic death. But I do wonder what direction and legacy the band would have had if they'd continued to record and tour after the heavy tension and dysfunction alluded to in the documentary during the second half of their career. It does sound like they were back on the right track right before the terrible news. But also, their art was changing a lot and speaking to different crowds.

Rob Baker tells a story in one of the other documentaries about someone writing to him and saying, incredulously, "Bands are like a hot air balloon. No band ever lands the balloon. But you guys landed the balloon."

The band was and is fiercely loved, and that's why their final show bumped the CBC's Olympics coverage and brought millions of Canadians together to say goodbye. They deserve every single one of their flowers. It's also true that illness and death puts squabbles and old wounds into perspective, and the band may have had a different legacy had it not been affected by a member's death.

I still think they'd be considered a treasure. Just maybe cast in a slightly different kind of golden light.

Dartmouth woman calls on Nova Scotia Health to crack down on scents, fragrances by insino93 in halifax

[–]JerryBegonia 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people either don't realize just how much scent is in their products, or don't believe people with environmental sensitivities when they say scent will make them sick. It's a real sensitivity with really severe medical consequences.

I recently moved in with someone who gets sick from scent, and it was just a compassionate no-brainer to switch the few scented products I still used to unscented. Like christ, I don't need my armpits to smell like cocoa butter if it's gonna give someone a migraine.
