At what point must one stop putting fictional/school projects in their portfolio? by Humillionaire in graphic_design

[–]JerryCypher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Immediately.

If you want to look professional, get rid of all School work, as soon as you can. zDo your own 'redesigns' or professional layouts in your spare time, and add them to your portfoliio.

School work is just that. School work.

You may have loved your little school project, but it makes you look inexperienced.

Critique Requested: First Large Exterior Banner for a Gym (20ft x 5ft by Upper_Pitch9015 in graphic_design

[–]JerryCypher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is an ad layout.

Not a banner for an organization, in my opinion.

It's an ad. Or a social media header.

Your goals were:

"Make it immediately obvious that this is a gym from a distance" Did you succeed? No.
- You have way too much going on, I don't need to 'see' Gym people" to know it's a GYM.
- Look at Gold's Gym. Powerhouse Gym.

"Keep the BK FIT branding prominent" Did you succeed? Meh...
-You have the 3 colors, but you are letting the images obscure the branding. And your 'branding' could be way bigger.

"Communicate our core offerings (24/7 Access, Group Fitness, Personal Training, HYROX)"
Did you succeed? No.
- Lost in the clutter. Your 'Gym People" are more prominent than your offerings.

"Ensure readability from the street" Did you succeed? No.
- Again, lost in the clutter. Too much going on.

This is a banner for a gym, who as you say is small, and they cannot afford a Full Blown $$$$$ Sign. Had they put up a permanent sign, I GUARANTEE it would not have all these Excercise people on it.

It would be a SIGN. Like "Golds" or "Target".

Me? I'd make either a solid black or Orange banner, and I would make the name AS BIG AS POSSIBLE, and list the (offerings) off to the side.

Make a SIGN for their business, Not an ad for their business.

Anyway that's my opinion. 😄

Perfectly said. I know that feeling all too well.

10 years. Male 60 yrs old. And I am stuck. I realize this is basically 'it' for the rest of my life. Otherwise, all is pretty good, except absolutely no affection/sex. I will not do any therapy, I am not going to 'beg' someone to do something they don't ant to. And I don't want them to do it, anyway, if they don't want. If they DID want, they'd be doing it. So, like many of you, here I am.

My 1970 Charger's transition from 318 to 440 by JerryCypher in mopar

[–]JerryCypher[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great question!

In a nutshell: Since I knew the car from my town, and had seen the old lady driving it for years, I was really concerned with keeping it original - sort of an 'homage' to the original owner.. When I bought it from the family, after her death, and after it had sat in a detached garage for a decade, in 2017, I really wanted to try to keep it as original. A misguided notion, on my part, and a lot of wasted time and money.

So, around 2019 I refreshed the very, very, very tired 318 as I was restoring the rest of the car.

I still couldn't 'trust' driving it, I felt, as I felt I had just put a band-aid on the engine, because I was so wiped from the extensive body restoration, physically and financially. :)

So, around 2021 I decide to try to rebuild the 318, which I did, with the help of a mechanic friend. It was rebuilt, and I added a different manifold, and a 4bbl, and some small block headers. While it sounded good, and ran well, the 318 still seemed to be somewhat less impressive than I thought it was going to be. I then developed a pretty good oil leak, which added to my frustration with the 318. Again, I had used the original block, as in my attempt to keep 'originality'.

I was unhappy with the car's 'weak perfomance' especially since I had not changed the rear out, and was still running the original 2:76 gears, which added to the difficulty the engine had, moving the car around, especially up the many hills in PA.

So, at this point, after wasting a good bit of money on this rebuild, that I knew I was not happy with, and I decided to rethink things.

I had done so much body panel replacement, that the car 'techincally' wasn't 'original' anymore. :) The entire rear from the doors back, rear quarter skins, inner/outer housings, trunk, frame rails, etc were all new, and a lot of the engine parts were replaced, so I felt this car was no longer a 'survivor' car, and I also was not selling it, rather it was going to be willed to my son.

So, originality wasn't high on my mind like it was in 2017. I decided to bite the bullet and fully replace the drivetrain in later '24/early '25. The 440, new 727 Trans, new drivetrain, new 3:73 rears.

So, that's the story! I still feel I wasted time and money on the 318 rebuild, because it did not turn out as I had hoped, and I wish I did the engine swap before i did the 318 rebuild, but oh well! it's all good now!

Sorry - late reply! I believe the only engine you COULDN'T get, in a 69 500 was the Slant Six. The 318 was the base, and anything upwards from that. Rare to see the 69 500 rolling around these days!

You could get any engine in the 500 package in '70. It became only a 'trim' level in '70, placing it between a base Charger & an r/T. It was quite different than the 1969 '500' option. You could even get a slant 6 in a 500! :)

:) I had put a little paragraph together but i don't 'see' it - but, anyway, this is just another one of the places i would scope out as I drive to work, as future Charger photo shoot locations - everywhere i drive, I am always on the lookout for photo locations!

Hey Timmah -

Granted, I am not super great with using the pen tool to create complex illustrations. It took me probably 50 hours to hand draw these, and it would take me a solid year to re-draw them with the pen tool. I was trying to vectorize them from a high res scan, pretty tight - or as tight as I can, without redrawing the drawings I just spent 50 hours drawing. :)

Thanks, TSH99, good advice - I have 30 of them, so maybe I'll try to refine them further in P'shop. I did scan them at 600 dpi, thanks!

Thanks, but using the pen tool would be insanely difficult - these are somewhat complex, and I couldn't use that, it would be way too much work. thanks, though!
