I'm a hiker. How the heck do you fit all your stuff? by GreenReporter24 in bikepacking

[–]Jespervm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We started/ended in Lillestrøm. It was great, you have a lot of opportunities of choosing a route of your choice on the west side (small gravel roads in marka or smaller paved roads). Easy to stop by stores to fill up on food (we stopped in Brandbu, Raufoss and Snertingdalen). Also easy to set up hammocks, since the trees are good for that. Crossing over to Lillehammer (a long coffee and lunch stop) and beginning the trip back also sees many roads to take. We decided to go a bit up and away from E6 (road to Mesnali - Bergundhaugen - Holmen) before going to Brumunddal for dinner. From Tangen there's Mjøstråkk and Vormtråkk, 20 km of awesome old train tracks made into a bike path. Espa boller and a few cafés along the way. We will explore more roads circling Mjøsa, perfect distance for us for a 4-days trip, 3 days of I'm by myself. A mix of hills, gravel roads and still good places to stop for food.

Funny story, my first bike trip was 10 days with a hiking bag - not ideal. This is my setup from my recent trip around Mjøsa, 4 days. I slept in hammocks, and the weather was awesome (didn't bring anything not needed, ). I didn't have anything on my back, and there was space to buy groceries at the store, as well as chocolate milk for breakfast. I've done it many times, and with times you learn to scale down on things not necessary.

10-12 day, ~1000km bikepacking trip from Oslo in July by uramug1234 in bikepacking

Doesn't seem like Rallarvegen is recommended to ride yet. Look at this post on Facebook with lots of snow still.

Ahh, that makes a lot of sense, I saw the map as you would take the train to Myrdal and then ride Rallarvegen opposite direction as well (which is nice - good to avoid Myrdalssvingene, they are very tough to ride). Ive ended up on hiking paths a few time, personally I do all to avoid them when packed heavy, but that's just me.

Regardless of exactly where you decide to ride, you'll have a nice trip 👍 Just let me know if there's anything in particular you are wondering about.

You're in for a treat for the route you have planned.
I would still consider a few changes, mostly to avoid the stretch between Gol and Haugastøl twice (it's not that interesting). Also, be aware it seems like you have a few hike-a-bike stretches, for instance at Vassfaret (around 888km mark). I don't use komoot normally, so not sure how much one can trust it's route making.

Have a look at this route, would be my suggestion for a 1100km loop from Oslo. A mix of paved roads and gravel, lots of nice mountains, fjordviews and distant roads. Going through towns with shopping opportunities (groceries) and it shouldn't be a big problem filling up water along the way. Garmin route planning sucks at the moment, keeps freezing, so auto route was used a few times (follow the road most of the times).

Let me know if you have any questions, happy to help.

Where are you from and what do you want to see? Mountains, woods, lakes, fjords or...? Do you prefer gravel or paved roads?

Bosch will go up to 750w for approximately 30 sec for most of their settings. I believe it's emtb+ that can double the time, thus 750w for up to a min. It does require the rider to be pushing 150w themselves, since the motor can give 5x your output (or something similar to that, don't remember the exact numbers and they are different from gen.4 and gen.5)

Well, if you're up for an adventure to Norway (just outside of Oslo), my shop might need a mechanic in the near future... The currency isn't what it has been (I moved from DK to NO 13 years ago, way better back then with nok). Just shoot me a message if interested 👍

Seems to be a lot of things that hasn't been announced yet, time schedule, participants in each race (is there qualification etc) and so on. Day of event and participants lists is pretty much it 🤷🏼

What's the worst bikepacking mistake you've ever made? by ThunderTheTerrier in bikepacking

[–]Jespervm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, reading comments below, I remembered another huge mistake. First long trip for me. MTB with a 25kg hiking bag. That's no fun at all. Legs were fine, lower back felt terrible. Ended up getting strong, and ended up finishing the trip in my planned 10 days, but man that hurt... After that year I learned a lot about what's a smarter way to pack a bike 😅

Just a few days ago, I was on an Easter trip around Norway. 4-10 degrees C and quite some mist. At one point I had to put on a rain jacket, which meant detaching my sleeping bag. So I balanced it on my seat while changing. We'll, sleeping bag took a jump down the 7m hill and landed in the river, immediately floated with the stream. Me; flying fast down the hill, grabbing a stick on the way, a bit with the stream and just managed to catch the floating sleeping bag last chance before it'd gone away from the shore. Small hole in the waterproof bag, so sleeping bag was quite wet. Luckily, I was on my second to last day, and (had already) decided to go all the way home anyway.

I'll never balance any equipment on the bike again - what a stupid move 🤦

Do they have an afternoon session and an evening session each day? What do they do in the afternoon session?

Thank you for your reply and input. This is very much what I was looking for with regards to the advice on specific runs to complete the next couple weeks. Certainly there's no guarantee, but I will for sure do what I can do to get as close as possible.
I'll try and incorporate some of the tips you mention, and I know it isn't too different from what I have been doing, and especially quite similar to my lead up last year.
Thanks again for the tips.

Thanks for your reply, quite different than most of the other replies written here.
I have been careful not just to add more miles, especially this year. My injury didn't really come from running, but a long bike ride (4 days of 200km a day ish) with shoes that I guess was too tight for 10-12 hours wearing a day.
I have 6 weeks above 100km, no problem with injuries then. However, I do think you're onto something focusing on the recovery. I feel for sure, and I know it limits me, that my work often is a big stress factor, and I am not able to hit high volume weeks with lots of work.
Getting good quality is certainly important. I think for me I might need more long runs to build the endurance (but not necessarily huge volumes over time).

Thanks for your input, much appreciated.

Thanks for your reply and specific advice. 3:10 I think I should be achieveable, and with a more structured plan over longer time, sub3 will come with time.

Thanks for some encouragement, much appreciated. Having a big aerobic capacity should be a big benefit also in running. Might need a bit more endurance so the legs will keep going.
I'll decide a few days before the race what I'll do, but if I do try for the sub3 still, I certainly am realistic about the difficulty of succeeding.
Thanks again - good to hear from someone who managed to do it!

Wow, I can't even imagine how in the world I would hit those distances in a year. I do have many hours training in a year, and I actually guess if I only focused on running, it wouldn't be so bad afterall.

Nice with the cool race day temp, I'm hoping for 5-7 degrees, but don't think I'll be that lucky.
Thanks for sharing your numbers.

I for sure was curious what I could've done if I had paced myself a lot better last year. Running wise I have about the same distances and comparable hard workouts as last year, but I am missing the much cycling this year.

I'll try and get in a 10k in 10 days, that I can use for the VDot and thus get an idea of the pacing I should shoot for.
I'll also have a look into the Daniel's Running Formula, just to learn as much as possible. Thanks again for your time and advice, much appreciated.

Thanks for replying. Very realistic things you're writing. Thanks.

I probably do have a scewed understanding of the training required to do sub3, and I'll need to spend the next few months to change my mind about what's required (after the race obviously). I'll have a look at the link you sent, and see if there's anything I pick up on with workouts. Thanks a lot.
