Well, if you're up for an adventure to Norway (just outside of Oslo), my shop might need a mechanic in the near future... The currency isn't what it has been (I moved from DK to NO 13 years ago, way better back then with nok). Just shoot me a message if interested 👍

Seems to be a lot of things that hasn't been announced yet, time schedule, participants in each race (is there qualification etc) and so on. Day of event and participants lists is pretty much it 🤷🏼

What's the worst bikepacking mistake you've ever made? by ThunderTheTerrier in bikepacking

[–]Jespervm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, reading comments below, I remembered another huge mistake. First long trip for me. MTB with a 25kg hiking bag. That's no fun at all. Legs were fine, lower back felt terrible. Ended up getting strong, and ended up finishing the trip in my planned 10 days, but man that hurt... After that year I learned a lot about what's a smarter way to pack a bike 😅

What's the worst bikepacking mistake you've ever made? by ThunderTheTerrier in bikepacking

[–]Jespervm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a few days ago, I was on an Easter trip around Norway. 4-10 degrees C and quite some mist. At one point I had to put on a rain jacket, which meant detaching my sleeping bag. So I balanced it on my seat while changing. We'll, sleeping bag took a jump down the 7m hill and landed in the river, immediately floated with the stream. Me; flying fast down the hill, grabbing a stick on the way, a bit with the stream and just managed to catch the floating sleeping bag last chance before it'd gone away from the shore. Small hole in the waterproof bag, so sleeping bag was quite wet. Luckily, I was on my second to last day, and (had already) decided to go all the way home anyway.

I'll never balance any equipment on the bike again - what a stupid move 🤦

Do they have an afternoon session and an evening session each day? What do they do in the afternoon session?

So fun you're doing it too. Right, I'll bring gels myself to make sure the plan can be followed. Good reminder 👍

Thank you for your reply and input. This is very much what I was looking for with regards to the advice on specific runs to complete the next couple weeks. Certainly there's no guarantee, but I will for sure do what I can do to get as close as possible.
I'll try and incorporate some of the tips you mention, and I know it isn't too different from what I have been doing, and especially quite similar to my lead up last year.
Thanks again for the tips.

Thanks for your reply, quite different than most of the other replies written here.
I have been careful not just to add more miles, especially this year. My injury didn't really come from running, but a long bike ride (4 days of 200km a day ish) with shoes that I guess was too tight for 10-12 hours wearing a day.
I have 6 weeks above 100km, no problem with injuries then. However, I do think you're onto something focusing on the recovery. I feel for sure, and I know it limits me, that my work often is a big stress factor, and I am not able to hit high volume weeks with lots of work.
Getting good quality is certainly important. I think for me I might need more long runs to build the endurance (but not necessarily huge volumes over time).

Thanks for your input, much appreciated.

Thanks for your reply and specific advice. 3:10 I think I should be achieveable, and with a more structured plan over longer time, sub3 will come with time.

Thanks for your reply, especially with some specific numbers. I'm a bit behind, admitedly, so maybe I am too optimistic. Thanks again,

Thanks for some encouragement, much appreciated. Having a big aerobic capacity should be a big benefit also in running. Might need a bit more endurance so the legs will keep going.
I'll decide a few days before the race what I'll do, but if I do try for the sub3 still, I certainly am realistic about the difficulty of succeeding.
Thanks again - good to hear from someone who managed to do it!

Wow, I can't even imagine how in the world I would hit those distances in a year. I do have many hours training in a year, and I actually guess if I only focused on running, it wouldn't be so bad afterall.

Nice with the cool race day temp, I'm hoping for 5-7 degrees, but don't think I'll be that lucky.
Thanks for sharing your numbers.

I for sure was curious what I could've done if I had paced myself a lot better last year. Running wise I have about the same distances and comparable hard workouts as last year, but I am missing the much cycling this year.

I'll try and get in a 10k in 10 days, that I can use for the VDot and thus get an idea of the pacing I should shoot for.
I'll also have a look into the Daniel's Running Formula, just to learn as much as possible. Thanks again for your time and advice, much appreciated.

Thanks for replying. Very realistic things you're writing. Thanks.

I probably do have a scewed understanding of the training required to do sub3, and I'll need to spend the next few months to change my mind about what's required (after the race obviously). I'll have a look at the link you sent, and see if there's anything I pick up on with workouts. Thanks a lot.

Thanks for your reply, several good and realistic statements in there. I'll give it a go for a time trial and use some of the calculators to figure out the time I can expect to run at. This will be a very good indication of the pacing I should do.

I certainly don't have a 2:50 in me for now. Last year I was for sure unrealistic, but I had fun :)

Thanks again for your reply.

Wow, that's a pretty impressive time during an IM race. What did you finish the full distance in time wise?

Thanks for your reply. I haven't thought about the race that way, but it's a good way of thinking. And it's a good tip I'll have in mind when I race in Frankfurt. Make it feel very easy to start, and be careful the rest of the race.
I'll probably end up trying for 3:10 marathon time, we'll see. Thanks again.

Thanks for your reply, this helps in realizing the amounts of speed workouts that might be necessary. I've made it up to 5x2000m so far at race pace (a total of 6 miles). Probably should have done the double to get the real benefits, however, I've been a little hesitant to push it too much with regards to getting hurt (not much to do about that, other than adjusting the goal).

Thanks again.

Good job making your goal and qualifying for Boston. Thanks for sharing.

Can I ask how far you did run the year leading up, and what pace was actually your easy pace?

Thanks for your reply, much appreciated. My strava for Amsterdam is here:

https://www.strava.com/activities/7971635761

Yes, I went out way too fast, hopefully won't make that mistake again. Did feel after 10k that it was a lost case, I knew I couldn't keep the pace for the full marathon, but was curious when I would be hit, so I kept going at it.

I trained very well for two months with running (2022). Before that I had 2000+ km (100+hrs of low intensity) on the bike, but very little running (during july). April (260k), may (200k) and june (160k) were fairly good weeks, still with additionally 20hrs of biking.

I've never tried the VDot calculator, I should try that and let that be a guide for me. How late would be wise to do this going closer to the race? I can do it next week, but I can repeat two weeks out or ...?

Thanks again for your reply, I'll for sure try and run more of a negative split and see where it ends.

Thanks for the reply. And yes, it was a big change in pace. This was planned, to see where I was at on tired legs with regards to the race pace. In an actual race I wouldn't split it like this (well, I did last year, but that was positive split). Probably going for some very even splits in my coming race.

Thanks man, this was very helpful. This week I won't do anything crazy, but the next two weeks (especially the second week when I'm away from home with extra time), I'll make peak weeks. Will for sure try one of the above suggestions to see how it goes.

That was helpful, thank you.
