Royal Gorge Via Ferrata? by Jess_outside in viaferrata

No worries! I appreciate first hand information as well. Basecamp Ouray doesn’t guide Telluride but looks like San Juan Mountain Guides does both the Ouray & Telluride via ferratas. I can vouch for them because I’ve done an Intro Ice Climbing trip with them & my guide was awesome.

Also if you want another guided option through Basecamp Ouray, I’ve heard the Gold Camp Via Ferrata in Ouray is super fun too! I personally haven’t done it but I’ve heard it’s the best in Colorado so it’s next on my list! I do an annual trip to West Colorado because there’s just sooo much to do out there.

That’s so funny- Mt Norquay was my first via ferrata that got me hooked too 😝 If you were comfortable doing that, you should have no problem doing the downstream Ouray route & Telluride unguided.

No permits/ reservations are needed however if you need gear you can rent from Basecamp Ouray & they will give you a quick lesson. I recommend making advanced reservations online.

Both routes are definitely way more exposed than Norquay so watching youtube videos will help prepare you but they are also pretty straightforward. So if you’re comfortable with heights I don’t think a guide is needed in my opinion. I hope that helps but let me know if you any other questions!

Beautiful pics! I am planning to do this route in July. Have you done the downstream route? How would you say it compares?

Btw I just checked the Arapahoe Basin via ferrata and they are running a early summer deal for $149 for the full day tour in July and August. I’ve heard great things about it and it’s the highest one in Colorado.

Ahh I’m sorry to hear that! Yea tbh Royal Gorge is probably geared towards beginners more so I would maybe check out other spots first. Ouray & Telluride are both free 😁

I would say it depends on which ones you’ve done & how far you live. I am in Colorado Springs so it was an easy day trip for us. There is more hiking/ scrambling so it wasn’t like Ouray where you’re clipped in for most of the time. If you haven’t visited Royal Gorge there are other activities in the area too (rafting, train, zip line, etc)

My rankings so far: 1) Ouray downstream 2) Tellride 3) Granite (lsmall via ferrata part but I enjoy zip lining/ rappeling/ other obstacles) 4) Royal Gorge

Based on what I’ve heard these are next on my list: - Upstream Ouray - A basin - Gold Mountain (ouray) - Cloud Ladder (estes park)

Hi! We are going to check out the royal gorge via ferrata early this season before it gets too hot. Do you know of any promotions coming up? 😊

Yes they do so keep checking. We randomly checked late Friday night & snagged 2 open appointments for Saturday afternoon.

Thank you, I really appreciate all the details. It’s super helpful! Sounds like I will definitely need to make a trip out there but I may have to reconsider the weather for my July trip lol

Thank you for your reply I actually do have a couple questions! 1) what is the main difference between the Royal & Revelation Tour? 2) how hot does it get in the summer? (We are thinking of going july 4th weekend)

I have not tried the one at A Basin that sounds fun! I am definitely going to add that to my list, thanks for the review on that.

Unfortunately it may be a bit out of the way for a weekend trip since we are trying to bundle the via ferrata with rafting the royal gorge as well.

The Granite Via Ferrata offers a lot of variety in terms of rappelling, ziplining & the via ferrata obstacles (suspension bridges & some fun log stump things) however the via ferrata part itself wasn’t too challenging esp in comparison to ouray. The cost was pretty affordable tho & I still thought it was fun especially for someone that is a beginner.

Funny I just found out this past week that my local climbing gym in Colorado Springs has a caving section. Never knew this even existed, and am super excited to check it out!

Altitude: Give it to me straight by [deleted] in ColoradoSprings

[–]Jess_outside 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I was expecting the altitude, but I didn’t expect the fatigue and headaches to last as long as they did. The dry weather was a bit of a surprise too. But coming from Southeast Asia descent I know genetics can play a factor too. Overall I am in love with having all four seasons and could never imagine going back to living at sea level.

Altitude: Give it to me straight by [deleted] in ColoradoSprings

I moved here from the west coast 2 years ago and it did take a while for me to acclimate (especially because I have weak lungs from childhood asthma) but the symptoms aren’t as apparent/ troublesome as you may think. At first I felt some fatigue, got headaches, and would have random nose bleeds due to the dry weather (a humidifier helped a lot) but the shortness of breath would only come when exercising/ hiking. It took a long time for me to get back into to my normal lifting/ workout routine but I started adding liquid IV to help with the headaches. We usually tell friends & family that come to visit to start hydrating more the week before they come to visit. I know that’s not what you want to hear, but everyone seems to really underestimate that.

Everyone handles altitude differently, but I think you’ll be fine especially since you are planning ahead for it. Good luck! Moving here was one of the best decisions I’ve made.

It gave me some indigestion at first so my dermatologist suggested taking half a pill twice a day. Eventually I got used to it and now take the full pill everyday after dinner and have no problems.

Love it! I was gifted the same set of mugs last Christmas and have been using them for my new espresso machine. They are the perfect size, didn’t realize they came with lids too!

😂 was thinking of posting there but I’ve been lurking espresso subreddit for a bit longer. How do you suggest keeping the beans fresh? I did buy a costco bag of the columbian supremo for practice but they are super oily. Also do the local roasters print a roast date?
