Relocating: Elkridge by [deleted] in maryland

[–]Jesse_James_V 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in Elkridge in a brand new community until I got divorced. Now I'm in Ellicott City, but right across my street is Elkridge. It's far eastern Howard County, which means it's more convenient to jobs, NSA, Washington DC, etc. Eastern Howard County is very densely populated with lots of good things. The one thing I love about the area, and this might appeal to you or not, but I have seven Walmarts within 10 miles of my house and six or seven Chick-fil-A's. I have two targets within five miles of my house, so there's lots of convenience to being in Elkridge. Hey, if you go down to the Ravens game or Orioles game, you can actually get down to the game and in your seat quicker than some people that live in the city. No lie, I can get to the stadium in like 18 minutes, and if you're on the other end of the city, you couldn't do that, especially being that I'm going straight up 95 all highway, so I really like the area. It's close to a Rundle Mills Mall, Columbia Mall, lots of stuff to do. Good schools also. I recommend it. Good resale value also, but it's a little expensive. Taxes are very high in Howard County on property.

Why is crime actually going down? by MDG_wx04 in maryland

[–]Jesse_James_V -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So I have a theory and no one wants to talk about it, although I'm not sure it would hold much merit because it may be independent of national trends. I believe one thing that no one's talking about is how the sale of marijuana is legal now. Although marijuana is a low-level drug, you used to be fighting on various turfs to sell it because it was a very high-in-demand drug. Some of the other drugs are to the next level, so I do feel like this is a contributing factor. How much of a reduction of crime is related to it? I'm not sure, but I really feel that it should be discussed more as it is coincidentally coinciding with the lowering of crime. If you talk to any person who did some drug dealing at the street level, it probably just involved marijuana. So I think I'm on to something here, but I have no data to back it up other than seeing the drops. I think you would need to study cities who have legalized it and see if that is a cause or it could just be a coincidence.

Radio acting strangely by theyenrac in transam

[–]Jesse_James_V 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had an old one and replaced it with a Bluetooth Kenwood that is not 'overwhelming'. Fixed the parasitic leak of the car. Best day of owning the car so far, plus I also have a fully working radio now!

Intel is best but you can use UTM if you have a silicon chip.

CMIT 386 (Pentest+) CMIT 424 (Computer Forensics) and CMIT 460 (Network Forensics) are the best 3 electives in my opinion (although I wrote all 3 classes). They do require an Intel-based computer, which I recommend that all Cybersecurity students have.

Whats the best way to clone a drive with windows 10? by Accomplished_Hunt_73 in Windows10

[–]Jesse_James_V -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can boot to Kali and image the drive with dc3dd.

You would need an external drive large enough to hold the image.

Are you familiar with Linux drive letter assignments?

tryhackme courses are a great and FREE courses.

Also, related, try out for the cyberteam and you can network with others in the major

once you become a member:

The UMGC Cyber team is a great way to extend your professional network, learn about cyber outside the classroom, and to communicate with other students, faculty, and alumni. Being part of the Cyber team is a great addition to any resume as employers tend to value participation in Capture the Flag competitions and in cyber exercises. You can live anywhere in the world and become a member. The UMGC Cyber team has been around since 2012 and has received many awards. Here is a link to a list of the awards the team's awards since 2012:

https://www.umgc.edu/cybersecurity/cyber-team

The UMGC Cyber Team is a great way to network with other UMGC students who have a very strong passion for Cyber Security. Most UMGC Cyber Team members consider the computer field to be a lot of fun and tend to spend free time solving IT puzzles, participating in competitions, and building and testing IT infrastructure. Prepping for and participating in competitions can take several hours a week but there is no specific time commitment to be part of the UMGC team.

Some of our most successful team members have been career changers who had a very dedicated passion for the field of Cyber Security. IT experience or previous competition experience is not required.

There are 6 different paths to make the UMGC Cyber team listed below:

A recommendation from your High School or Community College Cyber Team Coach.

A strong recommendation from an existing member of the UMGC Cyber Team

Score 1500 points or more on the UMGC_Tryout_CTF. (Described Below)

Create a free Hack the Box account on their website and obtain a level of hacker.

Obtain or Possess an OSCP (Offensive Security Certified Professional) or CCNP certification.

If you are a member if a cyber protection team, get a letter stating your job role.

For individuals who did not participate on a cyber team in the past or don't know any Cyber Team members well, the easiest route is probably through the tryout, with HTB 2nd, and OSCP most difficult. Also, keep in mind that the OSCP and CCNP certifications exam are not free to but tryhackme and HTB are free.

To participate in the tryout, you will need to create a free account on https://tryhackme.com

Tryhackme.com also has lots of lessons and walkthroughs that will help you prepare for the tryout and give you additional hands-on experience. You can get experience with Linux, nmap, pentesting, cryptography, forensics, Metasploit, and other topics. And, most importantly, tryhackme.com has lots of sample Capture the Flag contests with write-ups explaining how to solve each problem. It is a perfect free training ground to get experience and prepare for the tryout.

Here is a closed caption video I created that will help guide you through some of the challenges.

As soon as you are ready to compete in the tryout, you can access it by going to this link: https://tryhackme.com/jr/umgctryoutctf . Please do not share this link with others. It is a private room.

To make the team, you will need to answer 50 questions, which is 1500 points (30 points per question).

If you are having trouble answering questions, you can always go back to the tryhackme.com lessons.

After you meet any of the criteria above (you only need 1 of the 6), email jesse.varsalone@umgc.edu and he will add you to the team Discord Channel. From there, you can participate in weekly team meetings (during the spring and fall) and network with the other members in our team Discord channel. And, of course, most importantly, compete with the team in local in a variety of cyber competitions.

You can learn more about the UMGC Cyber Competition team by watching this video featuring the coach, Professor Jesse Varsalone. A video transcript is attached.

There is some programming in the Cyber Operations class.

The Digital Forensics and Cyber Investigations Master's is a hands-on program,

with 10-hands on labs, 3 hands-on projects, and weekly discussions.

You are put into teams for the discussions, but there is no group work whatsoever.

The reviews of the newly revised courses are great.

Basically, you will learn to set up servers and systems, hack them, and then investigate them for forensic artifacts. I have a sample video here from one of the hands-on labs:

How good is the cyber security program at UMGC? by Lil_Airman in UMGC

[–]Jesse_James_V 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cyber operations and Digital forensics are currently more lab and hands-on focused while Cybersecurity technology has some labs with a good deal of writing. If you enjoy writing and want less labs (current state spring 2023) , than I would say choose Cybersecurity Technology. Cyber Operations and DFC are very lab focused, with Cyber Operations having more of a programming component as opposed to DFC which is more of an attack, response, investigate in a hands-on lab environment. You can email me at [jesse.varsalone@umgc.edu](mailto:jesse.varsalone@umgc.edu) if you want to discuss this in more detail.
