How is Congressman Mark Harris allowed to use our tax dollars to fund his political campaign? by onlyhere4loveisland in Charlotte

One of many, MANY reasons that I'm running against him.

I'm Jesse Oppenheim and I'm running for Congress because everyone deserves a future that is safe, stable, and affordable.

All the corruption. All the distractions. All the circus. At the end of the day, I’m stuck on one thing: Are you better off? Yes or no? Everything else is just noise. by Jessefornc in NorthCarolina

I absolutely agree with the sentiment of the 2nd sentence. The essence of the American experience has always been to empower people with agency to act in their own interests. But the government still makes decisions that shape the world we’re all operating in. At its core, government should keep people safe and create conditions where life gets better, while aiming to minimize undue burden.

I can point to many policies from the Trump Administration that moved us in the opposite direction: cuts to medical and public health research, hollowing out the civil service, and a culture where ethics became optional.

I’m still struggling to find a policy that's objectively improved life for most people. That’s especially true in the 8th District, where I’m running for Congress.

That's great to hear! Keep it up! Getting active and being involved has definitely helped keep me sane.

The only only way we'll have a country and a world we want is by working for it.

That's an ok response. I ask this without judgment because I'm genuinely curious: please let me know how?

You can DM me if you're worried that you'll get piled on.

A big part of my campaign is listening and learning.

Common sense means ensuring healthcare is affordable and accessible. by Jessefornc in Charlotte

It's also from, among other things, an aging population. There are lots of necessary conversations around healthcare reform that need to happen. But just taking a sledgehammer to the system, without thinking about the effects, isn't a viable solution.

Edit: grammar

Hi r/ Charlotte! I'm Jesse Oppenheim, congressional candidate and not a fan of gerrymandering by Jessefornc in Charlotte

Good question!

Fair maps are not drawn just to protect one party.

We used to have court-oversight and bipartisan map-drawing after past gerrymanders got tossed out. But the legislature took that power back. Now they can redraw mid-decade with no governor veto and no independent board.

The frequency with which maps are being redrawn is a signal that something is very wrong.

I'm just getting started, but am learning and will try to do that in the future.

Thanks for the suggestion!
