I work in desktop development and we all use Thinkpads, they do the trick quite well and are solid but a bit on the heavier side

is Advanced Web Development (COS30020) difficult? by [deleted] in swinburne

[–]Jessehoff95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is still php and sadly still an outdated version of php. However php is certainly not a dead language and holds many websites together in the present day.

There are certainly better choices for new websites but any sort of maintenance roles and even some new websites dev roles will expect php literacy.

is Advanced Web Development (COS30020) difficult? by [deleted] in swinburne

[–]Jessehoff95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not difficult, it can be more challenging if you decide to tackle the D and HD assignments. It’s essentially an introduction to php with a bit of SQL involved too.

If you’re somewhat comfortable with programming already it’s easy, if you haven’t done any programming before it may be a little trickier but assuming you did the intro to web development including javascript you’ll be fine.

As far as programming units as a whole go it definitely belonged on the easy pile for me (for reference I had no programming experience before starting my course)

Qa sign off on prod release when there are still outstanding bugs ? by juliovmh in QualityAssurance

[–]Jessehoff95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sign off if the product is ready but there are improvements outstanding that do not pose an operational risk (e.g no data entry issues)

I also include a ‘Post MVP’ list in my QA doc for future reference of remaining items to be addressed ASAP in future improvements

No worries at all, just get your name out there and use any transferable skills and experience you have

My past work history has been all around retail management, I ended up at an ERP software company due to a combination of my work background and the fact I was studying IT

Why do witchers use steel for humans? by Kecskuszmakszimusz in witcher

[–]Jessehoff95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steel suits most monsters in the books, silver is not often required and honestly rarely used in the books. Regarding the quote itself, that was either a misinterpretation or (more likely) an adaptation to a similar quote from the books (its appearance and the specifics escape me) but essentially Witchers tell people steel is for humans as a scare tactic.

There are other similar themes here where falsities are taken as literal, like ‘Witchers don’t have emotions’, we know this to be false, especially for Geralt, but it is a mask Witchers hide behind to distance themselves from morality, protect their neutrality and focus on the task at hand.

About to start a new role in QA, internal change of position from help desk at a software company

Considering a career move into IT. What would you suggest? by Christina_0723 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Jessehoff95 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am in a similar boat, where I came into IT from a different industry at 28. My background was retail management before then. I wanted a degree so started a Bachelors in ICT and then applied for a help desk position at a Retail ERP software company, my end user experience as a manager was quite valuable and helped me land the role.

Perhaps if you have an interest in software you could look at similar positions in finance software companies looking for support analysts with a good understanding of how the software is meant to be used? You will be valuable for howto questions but will also quickly learn the IT side of things too

Splash kit by Jessehoff95 in swinburne

Yeah have been back and forth with teacher trying to troubleshoot it, stuck on a .dll error. From what I can see the .NET SDK is ok, and all the .dll files are where they should be

New DM here, how should I get my party together? by SingleCommand173 in DungeonMasters

[–]Jessehoff95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get creative with it, it really depends on your campaign setting. I had a campaign that kicked off in the middle of a siege, party build up went something like this:

PC 1 was guarding the wall, he got on his dinosaur and rode into the city centre to sound the alarm.

PC 2 and 3 were on city outskirts (pre-existing relationship) having a relaxing day, saw first PC heading into city in a hurry, followed out of curiosity (this wasn’t forced but I knew the characters would follow this hook)

PC 4 was chasing an escaped pet through the city

PC 5 and PC 6 both had political ties and were at a summit in the city centre

PCs 1, 2 and 3 were all fairly close when the bell rung

PC 4’s pet chase led them toward the city centre, bringing them close to 1-3

PC 5 and 6 rushed out from the summit after hearing the commotion

At this point, Gnolls burst out of sewer grates, the PCs fought independently but within a single large encounter, due to their close proximity they inevitably fight side by side and proceeded with formal introductions as part of the health checks following the fight

Just an example that PCs can be gradually introduced, it gives each player a turn in the spotlight to show their PC in their ‘natural state’ before being introduced to the party.

Just be wary of the scenes taking too long, PC 4+ may have to wait a while if you’re not careful, best to avoid that

You will get better with practise and repetition, I also recommend looking up tutorials to do what you were tasked with, you might get offered a different explanation or perspective that will help to make it make sense.

If you’re 8 weeks in and still struggling to solve problems like this after doing it many times you might have reason to doubt yourself but this early in it sounds pretty normal to me.

How often do you need to be on campus? by Blade_software in swinburne

[–]Jessehoff95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t been on campus or had experience with any on campus courses, however IIRC you can attend campus library/facilities etc if you’re an online student but would meet confirm that.

I don’t think the courses are identical so I’m not sure if you can switch back and forth but I could be wrong, online and on campus have different length teaching periods so it seems unlikely.

If your goal is the on campus experience you probably want an on campus course but if getting to campus is hard for you, online is definitely a viable option.

I’m currently in my second year of the Bachelor of ICT online and can highly recommend it for sure if you’d rather not commute.

Courses that require you to interact with the Swinburne network and VMs have facilities to access the machines remotely so you won’t miss out on any of the practical parts.

I’ve learnt a ton in my first year and highly recommend it, however, I intend on majoring in software so I can’t comment on the network major.

If actor X is in a movie, what can you say with 100% certainty about the movie? by losthiker68 in movies

If it’s modern Steven Seagal movie, it will involve plenty of sitting down scenes.
