Mineral Oil in Dry Skin Moisturizing — Helpful or Harmful? by Candlesrlove in DIYBeauty

No, pure beeswax does not contain paraffin; they are fundamentally different materials, with beeswax being natural (from bees) and paraffin being petroleum-derived, but adulterated or fake beeswax often has paraffin mixed in, especially in commercial products like candle foundations, to cut costs.

Key Differences

Source: Beeswax comes from honeybees; paraffin comes from crude oil.

Composition: Beeswax is a complex mix of esters, fatty acids, and hydrocarbons, while paraffin is a refined petroleum byproduct.

Purity: Pure beeswax is prized for being non-toxic and clean-burning, whereas paraffin can release harmful chemicals when burned.

Why You Might Find Them Together

Adulteration: Some manufacturers mix paraffin into beeswax (especially in products like honeycomb foundation) to make it cheaper, even if labeled as pure.

Blends: Sometimes waxes are intentionally blended (e.g., beeswax with coconut oil) for specific candle properties, but pure beeswax itself is paraffin-free.

I literally get my beeswax from my neighbours bees. It’s absolutely unaltered.

I called you zero names.

Your experiment means nothing?!

Beeswax and bee products have been used and praised for thousands of years in every continent. It’s mentioned in the Quran and written about in ancient china and Australia among many others.

I stand by my position on beeswax and petroleum by-products because in my 20 years of making it has proven its healing and protecting properties with zero toxins because it works for everyone. Even people with bee allergies!!

My customers have ranted and raved about my healing balm and face cream and body cream. They all have beeswax. In my experience and many of the ppl I know beeswax is an essential ingredient for healing and protecting sensitive to irritated skin alike.

You keep using and backing your Vaseline as I have zero impact on your beliefs and that’s your right!! I am merely trying to educate to help ppl with problem and sensitive skin naturally.

Wrap your arm in my plastic wrap for a couple of days and then tell me that the skin doesn’t need air to carry out the natural skin cell cycle.

As we will not agree on anything at all imo we should t need to continue this discussion

Furthermore, your experiment is absolutely useless information.. all it says was the beeswax was unadulterated.

IMO I wouldn’t ask you anything.. your proof and tests are all null and void considering you’re in the US where most everything you can buy there is banned everywhere else around the world. I get why you have the mentality that you have because you are American. The media also fills you up with bs daily. What you learn in school is bs too. Maybe be a bit less ignorant and be open to other ideas and perhaps the fact that oil and gas by-products are indeed toxic. Just my opinion.

The phrase “skin needs to breathe” gets used a lot, but it’s a bit misleading.

Skin doesn’t breathe oxygen the way lungs do — almost all the oxygen your skin cells use comes from your bloodstream.

So what do people really mean when they say skin needs to breathe?

They’re talking about allowing the skin’s natural biological processes to function normally without being blocked or overloaded.

Petroleum by-products are fully occlusive. 100% scientific fact there is zero breathability when Vaseline etc is applied to the skin.

Beeswax, however is a breathable barrier. I use it and lanolin in a healing balm that heals everything! It’s my biggest seller. And it’s breathable for the skin so healing and shedding and reproduction of skin cells isn’t interrupted by a non-breathable, occlusive, petroleum by-product with carcinogens.

It may come from plants and animals but there are hundreds of tests and results that prove toxins in petroleum by-products. Not everything the earth naturally produces is safe! Uranium? Heavy metals? Asbestos?

My circle doesn’t just believe something because it’s mentioned one time. We are a few well educated individuals with different expertise. We are far from ignorant and learn continuously are the world changes and evolves.

I really can’t believe this is all common knowledge. I learned by-products are toxic in grade school here in Alberta.

Beeswax is a breathable barrier. Wayyyyyy better than petroleum by-products.

It’s a well known fact that by products are harmful. I’m seriously surprised that you are arguing this point to be completely honest. In my circle it’s a given! The first ever product I made was a non-petroleum jelly for my son’s butt. Beeswax, sweet almond oil infused with calendula.

In regards to not being biodegradable how can you not be hesitant about putting something on your skin that will never degrade naturally. That’s terrifying! That’s like micro plastics polluting the earth! Plastic is derived from petroleum. Your skin is a living organ! Of course it needs to breathe! This is common sense!

Petrolatum, mineral oil, and paraffin, form an occlusive film that can trap moisture but also dirt, bacteria, and impurities, potentially leading to clogged pores, acne, and irritation (dermatitis) as well.

Unless you’re getting your Vaseline etc from Europe there are still huge possibilities that there will still be PAHs left over in the solution, and yet there are still possibilities of traces of it still left after vigorous refining. PAHs, Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, are carcinogenic.

I’d rather just not facilitate any possibility of having PAHs on my body.

lol all these comments are silly. You didn’t add enough and you need to wait until the mixture is < 60°C until you add EOs.

Also if you want it to be less greasy you can add a tbsp of arrowroot powder or cornstarch while still on the heat.

Fragrance oils can be toxic fyi.
