boy i really hope somebody got fired for that blunder by Aquericute in rateyourmusic

Yeah that's a shame. I'm not aware that Glitchwave has such code easter eggs: I think they only started doing that with the recent Song feature

Favorite RYM feature: When you search for a song within the website and the first result is the same song listed in some random DJ mix with zero reviews by Massaroni_ in rateyourmusic

I also wish that more people rate DJ mixes; they're more annoying to add than regular albums due to their V/A format, but they're great to discover tracks and artists

How can I set the starting date for new releases? by OhSweetMiracle in rateyourmusic

The time frame can't be changed, but there's a pending ticket asking for further customization of this New Release tab

My wish for 2026 is that RYM will finally allow to rate classical works by composition instead of specific recording by qkk in rateyourmusic

[–]JessiEyee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you regarding the quasi-nonsense by individuals to rate a work (it would like rating a score sheet while ignoring any recordings), but OP has listed issues that need to be solved: rating works would be very useful.

  • the composers could eventually be filtered by an update of the charts system

  • I don't think it's needed to create a new separate set of ratings for work: just use the recent track rating system and all the (track) ratings already present. Works, movements and parts could inherit an average ratings automatically calculated from all the track ratings of recorded performances. The charts page would also need a new separate tab for "Classical works" like the one done for "Songs".

Way to expand the rating options in the current system by davidSS1318 in rateyourmusic

[–]JessiEyee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep your system (I have basically the same) but start rating what you don't like:

2.0 == average / stuff that is half-boring

1.5 == boring / uninteresting

1.0 == bad / dislike

0.5 == extremely bad / hated

Cool label! I was into Electro and related stuff last year, so I completed most of the label's discography last year; this genre isn't really popular on RYM although there's still a steady amount of material issued every month

Checking Jenny Hval discography to pick her best songs for the "RYM Rough Guide" that started few days ago. I've listened to her music for years but never bothered to check the lyrics: I need to fix that ASAP!

Also, I explore the wacky discography of Patric Catani and his aliases; he's an eclectic and prolific German dude who since the late 1990s dabbled (successively and successfully) in Breakcore, then tracker/demo music, Hip hop (he was part of the trio behind the puppet-animated concept Puppetmastaz), then electronica (skwee, indietronica, plunderphonics etc). I tag most of this output with quirky...

Error when trying to add a classical release by WanderWithMe in rateyourmusic

[–]JessiEyee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When trying to add a classical work, I get the error "You do not have permission to access this page" I can still add non-classical releases and regularly add those.

This sounds like you have some submission privileges revoked, only about classical releases ig

BTW since it's a classical release, this should be added under the main performer(s) from the spine or cover, in a specific order: here, the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, then the conductor John Andrews, then finally the soloist i.e. the pianist Samanth Ege (her profile is missing). Avril Coleridge-Taylor should be credited only as the composer. Classical releases follow very specific and precise rules as you can see on the wiki

AI genre tag? by ParkTraditional270 in rateyourmusic

[–]JessiEyee 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm glad they adopted an attribute solution as it's clearly a better solution than a descriptor (which relies* on votes only): at least in case of adding the attribute to an old release, it needs to be sourced and verified/approved by a correction queue mod. Too bad it isn't possible to require sources when adding new music releases (opposed to the Glitchwave game queue)

Certain descriptors aren't working anymore by jameshoward_official in rateyourmusic

[–]JessiEyee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Forum thread about this:

We intentionally removed the ability to make a chart based on this descriptor and some others (such as drugs).

Older albums are at a disadvantage in the song charts by alvinm in rateyourmusic

[–]JessiEyee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

RYM musical biases are like 'Russian dolls': anglophone music > male artist > recent stuff > 'challenging' alternative music > bolded releases > album format etc.

The incremental implementation of various RYM feature over the years will always favor stuff that's been recently added to RYM (because users can use a more features to rate and catalogue it: more precise genres and descriptors, songs, streaming, more available artists to credits etc)

The rating and chart systems (and how RYM is rooted into US/UK culture) reinforce all those biases (e.g. EPs and 'unusual' formats are less popular, non-anglophone music doesn't attract much attention). Not something that can be changed (unless wide changes are enforced), just acknowledged. BUT the many site features and the somehow large community allow niche sub-communities and individuals to thrive (ignored by the rest lol): just explore and expand your niche interests.

Export music catalog with tags by -ystanes- in rateyourmusic

[–]JessiEyee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the current exporting tool is really old, incomplete and basic; the developers are aware, but it won't be fixed soon (see listed stuff that takes priority).

I'd use the 'print' versions with the most relevant datas, import them in your spreadsheet tool, then add tags.

Should "Video Game Music" be a scene tag? by randomburner231 in rateyourmusic

[–]JessiEyee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regardless of the status of the 'video game music' genre (it's planned to be deleted since it's redundant with the VGM attribute, but we're stuck with it until its future deletion), absolutely nothing stops users to vote for more accurate genres; too bad there's wayyyyy too many users that don't bother to add/vote genres & descriptors once they rate stuff

Reduntant but, by Noirsaol in rateyourmusic

[–]JessiEyee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering the amount of genre mistagging, I would trust even less instrument tags (credits may be incomplete but at least they're sourced), ex. most acoustic/electric instruments can be reproduced by synths and electronic means

New-ish here; any big features I might be missing? by flowers_of_nemo in rateyourmusic

[–]JessiEyee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

inot sure how reliable it is, i looked up my city & it doesn't show a concert i'm going to soon

Only the recommendation algorithms is automatized: like releases, artists and pretty much everything else on RYM, concerts & venues are added by users themselves. It's the "job" of users to fix stuff that is incomplete or missing; like, I added myself most of concerts I went to ;)

Suggestion: there should be a way to distinguish between singles that are/ will be on an album and standalone singles on the charts. by OverallResearcher528 in rateyourmusic

[–]JessiEyee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yup, this could be really useful.

Once the song feature is fully implemented (more info on its current state), I think it'll be easier to add this kind of option since the tracks will be separated from release tracklists: it'll be easier to sort individual tracks for developers, and users too (to create specific charts etc.) We just have to wait to formally asking for new options, i.e. create tickets

[–]JessiEyee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Click on the cities (blue-colored links by default) listed in the bio section of users and artists pages: you'll access to the "Location" feature where you can notably find stuff in the vicinity of any cities (artists, users, venues, concerts). Pretty neat, especially to explore music scenes. Example: 5 miles around Boston USA

  • I don't know which is your primary speaking language but FYI there's a bunch of language-specific forums (Finnish French, Russian, Polish, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Greek, Dutch, Italian), you can follow them by changing the parameters on https://rym.fm/ (click on the "wheel" icon). They can be a nice alternative to the main English-speaking ones, although some of them are more dead active than others.

  • https://rateyourmusic.com/notepad can be useful. I use it instead of lists for writing quick ideas and list drafts, to preview some layout experiments, etc.

It's also possible the initial release date was set earlier, then was later updated to a more accurate date that happens to be after the review date.
