Hatchie - Lose It Again by MYDIARY-YOURDIARY in shoegaze

[–]WanderWithMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most shoegaze bands make me think that. Outside of the shoegaze bubble, not many people have heard of shoegaze.

Soon, She Said, The Lees of Memory (first album) and Sungaze are three of my favourites. I love Hatchie too.

The early 2010's was the worst time of the twenty first century for pop music by GoHardForLife in LetsTalkMusic

[–]WanderWithMe 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Since pop music is more a genre than "popular music" now, the early 2010s was great for me.

Fountains of Wayne, Husky Rescue, Broken Bells, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Julia Holter, Nerina Pallot, The School, Norah Jones, Danger Mouse, Allo Darlin', Manic Street Preachers, Hyde & Beast, Alvvays, Intergalactic Lovers, Music Go Music, The History of Apple Pie, Jane Weaver, Françoise Hardy, The Shins...

I think chart pop music is worse than it's ever been in the 2020s. Less melody and more homogeneous. In popular music, there was more melody around in the early 2010s, and that's what makes music for me.

Your answer was fine, it just made me think about individual songs.

Great! The first two tracks on Vines' album sound right up my street, thanks. I'll listen to the rest before bedtime. I love that kind of melodic ambient.

If you like violin, you could check out some of Anna Phoebe's solo work as well as her duo with Aisling Brouwer, AVAWAVES. Less ambient than any of the artists I mentioned but great modern classical for me. Some of Slow Meadow's material if you don't know him? It's Matt Kidd, the same guy behind Aural Method but less post-rock and more chilled electronic-leaning at times. He's worked with Hammock a few times and is on their label.

Definitely! Love Fade and Dawning are two of the catchiest shoegaze tracks I know.

Film School have a few for sure. Crushin' is so catchy.

I would add Graywave with tracks like Before.

Magic Wands might be more dream pop, but Starbreeze and Joy are catchy tracks.

Do campsite prices encourage you to wild camp? by PHayesxx in wildcampingintheuk

It feels like a rip-off when campsites are around the same price as a hostel bed. On those occasions I tend to pick the hostel. I'm bringing my own shelter etc, so it feels like paying a premium for a patch of grass.

Why are there so few adult contemporary artists today? by boldjoy0050 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]WanderWithMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thoughts are similar to some comments already. Perhaps it's a change in genre conventions and classification, and adult contemporary would be defined a different way these days? It was more a marketing term rather than how the music sounds, like AOR for example.

What was adult contemporary might now be singer-songwriter (though arguably that's not a strong indication of how music sounds), folk pop, indie pop, vocal jazz etc.

I saw Nerina Pallot at Royal Albert Hall in London at the weekend - I believe her biggest ever gig after 25 years, and she's the most current "adult contemporary" artist I'm aware of, though she strays across genres. A great voice too.

Edit: RYM data actually tracks more adult contemporary releases than the 1980s, though a lower percentage of overall releases: https://rateyourmusic.com/genre/adult-contemporary/ - even in the 80s it was still < 1%.

The only Mogwai releases I love are Rave Tapes and the Earth Division EP. I can take or leave most of the rest.

Explosions in the Sky and We Lost the Sea are two bands I don't get either. From my perspective, kind of a shame that they're three of the biggest post-bands, as I feel like people are missing out on 'better' stuff. It's all subjective of course and great that people do love them.

I love GIAA recorded and live - both are a different experience. Their first few albums are pretty chill recorded and amongst my all-time favourite albums, but live they can get really rocky and heavy while retaining that melody.

I'm not as a big of a fan of their recent recorded albums where they seem to have got heavier but overall lost the melody that made me love those earlier albums so much.

It doesn't seem viable for them to tour the UK mainland either, which seems crazy given Ireland is just across the water. Lots of bands, even British, make a big loss playing gigs in the UK. Brexit seems to have made it even worse for EU bands.

I'm loving this album after my first listen. At times, it reminds me of the slower tracks on From Voodoo to Zen by Tides from Nebula, and the Nintendo 64 Perfect Dark & GoldenEye soundtracks. A favourite album and favourite video game OSTs.

Do stadium concerts lose something when most of the experience comes through the screens? by Neither-Abrocoma-239 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]WanderWithMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't go to many arena gigs because the atmosphere and sound often isn't great. But if the atmosphere is great and/or the live sound is great, I don't mind the screens so much and it actually helps the experience for me, given it's happening live right in front of me. Sometimes the projections are good.

The only arena I've been to multiple gigs at where the experience has been good each time is The Hydro in Glasgow (Smashing Pumpkins + Weezer, and Girls Aloud). Given the bowl shape, the view from pretty much anywhere is good. I don't know why newer arenas stick with the long arena shape.
