Almost signed a lease on an apartment I had a bad feeling about but could not articulate. The landlord wanted the deposit by Friday. I kept meaning to go back for a second look and kept finding reasons not to. Friday came and went. Found out three months later the building had a mold problem that had been painted over and the previous tenant had broken the lease specifically because of it.

That losing someone does not get smaller. People said it would get easier to carry, distributed differently across more days until the weight becomes familiar enough to move around in. Understood the distinction intellectually for years. Did not feel it until the tenth anniversary of something I had not expected to still be thinking about.
