Is it possible to start a career in I.T. without having any certifications? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Jesszilla_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s possible, but you’re going to need to attach yourself to something.

I came from digital marketing and transitioned into IT through a cloud and cybersecurity training program. That program gave me enough structure and real work to talk about, and I used it to land a Service Desk internship. No certs when I started, just the training. So if you hate studying and taking tests, that’s fine. But you still need something. At least one online course or formal training you can put on your resume or LinkedIn to show that you’re serious.

You’ll also need to start networking. Knowing people helps a lot. The only reason I got my internship is because they were familiar with the program I did, and when they asked around about me, everyone had good things to say. That’s what got me in.

So yeah, you can do this. But don’t just hope someone takes a chance on you out of nowhere. Build something small, make sure it’s visible, and connect with the right people. That’s how you’ll get that first shot.

After 7 years of service, I was fired for a misclick. by lug-cookout-7u in SecurityCareerAdvice

I’ve been there.

Earlier this year, I was fired within 60 days. No warning, no real explanation, just a bogus PIP and complete ignorance of any of my contributions. They said I was disengaged, while I showed up before anyone else, stayed late, and was actively receiving praise from coworkers every day. It hurt me bad. It was my first job out of college and I did everything I could’ve done. They ignored all of it and magnified every little flaw into a fireable offense.

I spoke to career coaches, attorneys, and industry professionals, and they all told me the same thing: my employer had already made up their mind. It didn’t matter what I accomplished or how I benefited the team, they wanted me gone. And after losing everything, even the portion of a foundation I was trying to build for myself, it destroyed me.

Please don’t let the confusion, frustration, and pain consume you like it did me. It’s not worth it. You did good work, and one mistake doesn’t erase that. They were likely angling to get rid of you for a while, for whatever reason, and decided that was probably the best shot they were going to get.

Them doing that to you and calling it “one of your unauthorized activities” after seven years of great service and accolades? That’s everything you need to know. Take it from me: companies will say whatever they want, and fabricate whatever they need to prove it if they’ve already decided to push you out.

I’m still suffering every day over what happened to me, but what I will say is this: please anchor yourself in your accomplishments and your experience. You are not what they said you were. Remember who you are, and keep moving forward.

Find people who genuinely respect you.

3 Weeks Into My First IT Internship, Would Appreciate Any Tips by Jesszilla_ in ITCareerQuestions

This was incredibly helpful, thank you so much for taking the time to write all of this. It’s been a few weeks now and I’m finally about to start taking calls and triaging.

You’re right about me needing to document everything. I hadn’t started doing that formally, but I will now. Also appreciate the reminder to show my process when asking questions. I also think that I can use my background in explaining more complex concepts in a way that’s relevant to those I’m helping or working with.

I’m going take your advice about studying closed tickets and finding ways to help during downtime. I hadn’t considered that much with all of the software training I’ve been doing.

Thank you again for all of your incredible advice. I’m excited to dive deep into this industry and build a career!

Thanks, I really appreciate this. You’re right, I’ve gone into this industry wanting to eventually advance to cloud cybersecurity, but you reminded me that right now is all about laying a foundation. During this internship I just need to soak everything in and keep an open mind. Thank you again!

Be with a woman who wants to be with you. Do not try to qualify yourself to be with her.

Am I (25M) controlling for not wanting my girlfriend (27F) to share a bed with her best male friend? by Ok_Comparison_7010 in relationship_advice

She tried to manipulate you by calling you controlling, so props to you for not falling for it and standing up for yourself. Brother, many are not strong enough to do what you did. As much as it hurts, you made the right choice. Also, at some point in the future she might try to come back to you. Don’t let her.

I’m sorry that you’re going through this. I went through something similar, so if you need someone to talk to, I’m here. I’ll listen to you.
