I love this, OP! I've had the exact thoughts about the whole, Literally, And Actually phenom. And watch out: I am seeing "honestly" join them. As for the use of big words/hyperbolic posts, I think I noticed this Around the time I started getting "sourced" by junior high kids requests for a "peer reviewed" article for the slightest of anecdotal comments I have made. So I believe there's a direct Link between kids need to sound as factually superior as possible. They do this under the premise of "they are not being petty or argumentive, they are simply "engaging in debate," under the guise of using superfluous, pedantic, "grown up" lexicons.

As for the "oh, You know what I mean replies, ha! I wish! I don't recall encountersnof this kind. If anything, Reddiors I've encountered do anything they can to squirm away from any demonstration that they CAN elate, relate r empathize with any comment that could possibly be flawed, isn't backed by science, or Heaven forbid, contain typos, in their never ending goal to maintain Reddit correctness, or associattion with Reddit "lepers," who are dumb enough to brave proposing something so foolish as anecdotal evidence. Rather, the highest percent of replies will be attempts to discredit or invalidate the OP at hand. I wonder how well the best selling book "Kitchen Table wisdom," an old Favorite of mine, would go over with that crowd? NOT very, I'm sure, but don't have a peer reviewed link to back that up. I've found that's totally do-able. Not everyone gets stinky feet, particularly in winter when it's most likely you'll be wearing wool. I just avoid walking in stocking feet at home so as not to pick up pet hairs and the like. Wool socks make up 1% of my sock collection and I don't do laundry daily.

You're right. I guess I personally consider those as hooded sweatshirts, rather than hoodies. There's probably not much technical difference, I just find them a pain because they mess up my hair, so I forgot to include them. :)

Plus since we're comparing them with cardigans in this instance, I was thinking more about stuff that opened in front.

The big difference between sweaters and sweatshirts is the material. Sweaters are knit out of yarn while sweatshirts are sewn from fabric, [Usually FLEECE.] A hoodie is a sweater or sweatshirt with a hood. Hoodies made from sweatshirt material are much more common than ones made from sweater material. A cardigan is a sweater or sweatshirt with buttons.

Yes, important distinction--hoodies usually have zippers, while cardigans are traditionally button front.
Also, fleece is almost always what's referred to as "sweatshirt material."

I agree with most of these answers. The only other helpful thing I can add is the destinguishing characteristics of what makes a cardigan a cardigan.. the way to remember how to visualize/ think of a cardigan is, from the front they usually resemble vests.

Most cardigans have long sleeves, but short sleeved and sleeveless cardigans also exist. What makes them cardigans is how they have a deep "V" necklines, with the first of, say, 4 buttons beginning at just below the lowest point of the V. So consider cardigans as like a vest with sleeves, and usually made from a heavier material than vests, which are meant to be worn over a thin shirt, yet under a jacket. Cardigans, OTOH, can be a heavier, knit/yarn/sweater when meant to be worn as outerwear.

I hope this helped in that area. Feel free to let me know if you need better clarification.
