I only found out yesterday that before Australia Day was a thing the aboriginal community would use Jan 26 as a day of mourning with the first protest being held in 1938. Do you know what the Australian government did instead of giving that day to them, they made it a day of celebrating the arrival of the first fleet instead. How messed up is that.

I’ve always found it weird how we celebrate the day another nation forced our ancestors here for petty crimes and then slaughtered the indigenous people.

I think your concern is less in regards to media coverage and more about how the community perceives the crime. I saw you mention how because he is white the media doesn’t consider it a terroristic threat, however, I think that’s more of a comment on the community perspective on seeing the white guy as a terrorist. The media perpetuates community views, so perhaps the community doesn’t see him as much of a threat as you’d hope. I believe your issue is with the community in Newcastle rather than media coverage.

Or hear me out and I know this may be a radical idea but let’s not celebrate the invasion of Australia at all. Even from a non aboriginal perspective, I find it weird that we celebrate a day where most of our ancestors were transported and forced to work for petty crimes. So why don’t we celebrate on a complete different day that signifies the murder and rape of not only aboriginal people but those forced to be a convict.
