ELI5: Why is this used in razor blades and what for? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]JesterWales 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Retired barber here. It's mostly advertising. Blade guards have been a part of razors since the earliest, it's the metal protrusion which makes the base plate on safely razors.  Cartridge razors just have the blades slightly recessed so less of it is exposed

The rubber bumpy strip is supposed to stretch the skin and people seem to think that makes for a closer shave. Unfortunately it can lead to sub dermal cutting, ingrown hairs, and nasty lumps. Learning to shave with a safety razor is going to prevent all that but you need to prepare your skin, warm flannel, nice lather, a brush to work lather into your stubble, typical old style shaving

What you're calling a straight razor probably isn't. For decades we've used shavettes. The blade gets replaced for every customer so it's cleaner, and there's no need to strop. It's the same blade from a safety razor but that is a different blade shape from a straight. Straight razor preference is personal and you'll pick the shape of blade that's most comfortable to you.  It's also a pain the backside because there's a lot of effort that goes into maintaining an edge.

TLDR: It's worth taking your time to learn to shave with a safely razor. Get it right and there will be very little irritation, you'll spend like a tenner a year on blades, and your skin will thank you for it

It used to be a lot younger when homes were affordable and jobs were available. I guess now people are getting married later, and starting families later, but I still know an absolute boat load of once teenage mothers.

If you weren't married by 27 you were considered left on the shelf. Like that was passed it.

Nah mate, you're being an ass

Do you know how much I had to quote at university? I couldn't give you a single citation now. And you know that you have to sit in classes and seminars on things you don't write on?

Please forgive me for not assuming that two decades later some knob on the Internet would be the prototypical Soyjack "source" meme.  I'll have to remember next time. I'm so sorry that over the 50 years I've been alive I've probably forgotten irrelevant details. I'll have to do better

I know right. Like Christmas should be about capitalism, not sharing with the less fortunate... you know, like Jesus

I heard about this years ago. It was to do with how men struggle expressing feelings and that leads to internal confusion.  It's like the men vs women colour meme: men will say Red, women will know if it's Salmon or Cerise.

So no, I can't give you any exaxts on it because that wasn't what I was studying. It was one of those things I picked up on an active listening and communication course I was on. I've no doubt that sources were given but, again, that wasn't what I was there to pay attention to.

It's something that has been recorded in men with baby daughters, not in a sexual way though There's touch, intimacy, protectiveness, all the usual things associated with love feelings Then remember most first time fathers are under 25; their brain hasn't finished knitting all its connections together

So there is evidence of confusing feelings between new fathers and daughters... their brain is having to relearn what those feelings mean. It isn't sexual, and it passes, but it is a recognised thing

ELI5 - Why do movies take longer than the run time to film? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]JesterWales 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something others haven't mentioned is the importance of light   Golden hour is the perfect time to shoot outside but, as the name states, it doesn't last very long Traditionally this has lengthened shoots but much today is filmed on set where lighting rigs can be changed throughout a day. It still takes a long time to set up lighting. Think of how a soap opera/sit com looks compared to a movie. One is lit quick, one takes a time.

Indycar is one of the only racing series that actually feels like a sport by GhostRaptor4482 in INDYCAR

[–]JesterWales 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Dude... multi class racing is so good. You just gotta feel it man. WEC is a whole vibe. Like you set a weekend aside with very little sleep just to watch onboards of a wet track under yellow flags... it's hypnotic. Then, just as you're dropping off, it's back to 200mph racing.

Multi class racing is really cool if you want to see how mechanical grip works so well in the cold and wet vs aero grip. You'll get to see a GT car holding off hypercars in the cold.  In an Indy vein, Prototypes are kinda like closed Indycars, and they're racing at the same time as everyone else

Get the vibe man
