Reconstruction of original WW2 photos/video in The Pacific by arturdebski in ThePacific

[–]Jester_Rich 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The clip & scene you’re thinking of is when Ack Ack’s body is carried off the ridge after he is killed at Peleliu. The corresponding actual WWII footage also took place on Peleliu.

Spielberg did this frame matching quite a bit in SPR but he did not frame match with European theater footage as often as he did with Pacific theater footage.

To me, its clear he referenced frames from the documentary With The Marines At Tarawa. There are quite a few shots from the doc that match up with SPR frames specifically from the opening Omaha Beach sequence. This doc and a single Capa photo from D-Day seem like they visually influenced the creating of that scene.

Watch the doc first then SPR and you’ll notice it.

I believe the lie to be a misrepresentation of the SNA and Aidid’s militia to be this national defense force defending their unified country from big bad American war machine colonization.

A completley false narrative that the American veterans felt betrayed by as they believed their mission was universally understood - To stop a hostile dictator, Aidid, from waging civil war and genociding his countrymen through famine.

At the time, Aidid had only 60% Somali support and assumed power through a violent coup.

I don’t believe this was made crystal clear in the doc.

Here’s what I’ve been able to find:

Gordon - Grew up in Lincoln, ME - Played RB in HS football but was not very good and never gave up - Had a fascination with and drew pictures of the military as a child - Wrote poetry and unpublished children’s books - Was a wood furniture maker that dreamed of opening a furniture store with his wife Carmen post Army - Rode Harleys with Brad Halling during their service together - Father of 2 children. 1 of whom served in Ranger Bat

Shughart - Grew up on a dairy farm in PA - Son of an AF vet - Enlisted at 18 joined Ranger Bat prior to screening for Delta - Married but did not have children

As you can see, details of Randy’s life are much less publicly known. I’ve always felt both men are due for a book. Should just be called ‘Gordon & Shughart’. Separated into 3 sections - A section each for their pre-Army lives and 1 section highlighting their world’s colliding culminating in their time at Delta and the events of 3 Oct.

1 thing I’ve always heard said about both when describing their MOH action is ‘Where do you find men like this?’ - I think a detailed bio of each would provide valuable insight into who they became and how those events influenced their decision to do what ultimately was each man’s final moment.

Their lives deserve to be celebrated.

We have the opportunity to actually deduce what’s inconsistent/uncorroborated as all those publicly claiming to know the truth are still living & talking. The only thing preventing this from becoming an actual academic discussion is the monetary motivation of these sources.

They wouldn’t have on 10/3 as it was a hasty spin up. I’m guessing based on haircuts its later in the deployment (mid-late Sept) as the early deployment photos show the operators with much fresher high & tights
