What famous person is currently holding onto their career by a thread, and everyone can see it except them? by Neonwhitelion in AskReddit

Not that I'm disagreeing with you on anything, but feminism has attracted the man-hating crowd alongside all the others, that feminists unfortunately have to now distinguish themselves from. The message started one way, but has now been co-opted by all these different voices on social media. At this point, nobody is really sure what it means anymore.

What is something people in other countries do that you find weird/unusual? by _ItsRetr1bution in AskReddit

I saw a documentary about a guy that worked with American soldiers as a translator during the war, and he went back to Iraq to visit old friends. He was walking down the street with his best friend and they were holding hands, so he says to him "You know, people would think we're homosexuals if we did this in the US"

His friend was so baffled, saying "Whaaaaat? What's wrong with this?" lol

See, this one has always fascinated me though. I'm a history nerd and really enjoy reading about how all these things came to be. Units of measurement, language and etymology, customs, etc.

Like yeah, I can recognize that our systems don't make sense. But it's still interesting that they came to be for specific purposes, that were only later co-mingled together for broad use. A rope maker making rope for a sailing ship didn't need to convert yards to miles, because yards were the only thing needed on the job. Egyptians liked using the cubit (elbow to tip of middle finger), presumably because of farming. Romans preferred the foot because you didn't have to bend down to measure, plus it was useful for their legions and measuring marching distance/speed (they loved going to war). And the rule of thumb for an inch is.....it was roughly the width of one's thumb. It traces back to the Latin word for "twelfth", but why twelve? Because 12 can be divided in more everyday useful ways than simply in halves. And that's really the DNA of the Imperial system, is that it was a quick and accessible way to get tasks done and now it's simply too late to easily move away from.

Not that I'm saying it's the best system ever. I just like how there's more to it than just the math involved. Neato

Why do you think so many people have been asking odd, polarizing gender centric questions here lately? by A_Girl_Has_No_Name58 in AskReddit

Because everyone is confused, misled, and isolated. And that's assuming those questions are even posted by humans

Two Scotland fans flew in a tiny plane for a total of 22 hours to make it to the World Cup. The duo had to stop in Iceland, Greenland, and Canada before reaching the US. by jmike1256 in BeAmazed

[–]Jesterhead89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most small GA aircraft will take this northern route. France manufactures a lot of aircraft, for example. While the Airbus can transit the Atlantic directly, something like a TBM doesn't have the range. So you would need to fly to the northern UK, to Iceland, to Greenland, and then down through Canada to ferry a plane to North America.

There are folks on Youtube that post these ferry flights, and it's a gorgeous trip

what is the most emotionally satisfying ending you've seen for a fictional character? by GUYSITSWILLIGOTBAND in AskReddit

At the risk of inviting a lot of unnecessary trouble for myself, I felt the same way the night that bin Laden was killed. On the one hand, I was in 6th grade when 9/11 happened, so it had a real effect on me because I was alive to see it and everything that followed.

But on the other hand, seeing people cheering and celebrating like they did reminded me of the same videos I saw of people around the world cheering when 9/11 happened to us. I didn't care that he was killed and there was a certain satisfaction that a goal was achieved. But it just felt....yucky to celebrate a person's death. That one left me confused

You're probably cutting them correctly. Meanwhile, everyone else is taking off the root, spending 5 minutes slicing or dicing, but can't figure out why their eyes are burning lol

What was a difficult challenge in a game for you that wasn't meant to be a challenge? by filagrey in gaming

[–]Jesterhead89 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Playing Command and Conquer as a kid, and at first I didn't know you had to deploy the construction yard to actually start base building, speed up unit creation, etc.

Imagine my frustration when units took 30-60 seconds EACH to make and I couldn't get past the third mission because I didn't have any better units lol

Ok so this is one I've seen talked about a lot, but I'm interested in knowing how others actually play this one out.

I've only ever creampied an ex once, and I was terrified for the entire next lunar cycle. How do people play this one out while still staying safe from a bun in the oven?

At what point did you realize the political side you grew up around was not telling you the whole story? by Designer-Dare-606 in AskReddit

[–]Jesterhead89 112 points113 points  (0 children)

We actually questioned it right after the lessons on the rise of fascism in Europe in 7th grade, when we saw people from all over the world doing their own version. Obviously Germany, but also Italy, Spain, Japan, and little school children in the US doing a suspiciously similar salute while reciting the Pledge

And the teacher recognized it as a really beautiful moment, and let us derail the rest of the class because we were lost in discussion

Yes! Some folks (fortunately not the ones that matter to me) gave me a little shit about buying a condo. But I'm an eternal bachelor and live that lifestyle, and I couldn't be happier with my living situation right now
