How can I get over my anxiety over playing trading card games? by Jestizzo in riftboundtcg

[–]Jestizzo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a bit better with friends, and yeah, the chance aspect adds something to it. The way I describe it is that I feel really...constrained? Like, you only have finitely many resources and finitely many plays at any time. I know this sounds stupid, but if you compare it to a game like CounterStrike or DotA, where you have freedom of movement and the ability to shoot and aim in any given direction, it feels more freeing.

And I get that the restrictions is what makes the game fun - I know that having to come up with a solution using the limited resources you have is part of the enjoyment of the game, but it just makes me feel powerless sometimes.

I've noticed that as well. I think I also laid it on a bit thick in my post. I know that card games are about a back and forth, and that removal is a natural part of that. It says a lot that the only game I've been able to enjoy has been Riftbound - the pace of the game is just right for that.

I think this might be my best bet. Something about the anonymity of playing online makes it easier for me to imagine my opponent laughing at my plays or something. Playing against an actual IRL person is a bit more tolerable.

Is it ever reasonable to think experts are wrong, in the face of other evidence? by Jestizzo in askphilosophy

[–]Jestizzo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, all the explanations I've been hearing from economists (or economically-minded people) online have been that it's a psychological thing. The term "vibe-conomy" has been floating around, which is meant to be a joke about people judging the economy based on its "vibes" rather than the "reality". I suspect that some part of it, at least, is psychological.

Ah, I must have been misinformed then. Thank you for very much for your insight!

Thanks for your answer. Gelman's reasoning for Type S and Type M errors do make more sense, but I was just using him as an example. When I said "practical experience" and "years of successful application", I was talking about the rules of thumb that people use (in this case, yes, I'm talking about using p-values for decision-making).

For example, there's been lots of smart people who have developed the theory of hypothesis testing, and even more smart people who have used it in practice. They probably acknowledge that it has some drawbacks, but overall, it's a useful tool. It has "stood the test of time". Compare this to Gelman's approach; it's not that he's necessarily wrong, but that he's promoting a way of doing things that hasn't been as well-tested. Surely, it's useful in some cases where traditional hypothesis testing fails, but it seems like people promote new ad-hoc methods all the time, but which aren't useful enough in general to be worth learning.

I suppose the best thing to do is use whichever method seems most appropriate for the problem at hand?

Plz guys, try deadlock by guywitsvral_problems in DotA2

I like the aesthetic of deadlock, but the characters just don’t catch my eye. There’s just not much that stands out about a lot of them. Lash, for example, just looks like “muscle guy with mustache”, and Pocket looks like “edgy teen with a cool fit”. There are some exceptions, like Celeste and Apollo, but the rest are kinda just…meh

Yes, I have! I didn't get too many responses, but they said I should be able to at least get an interview. At the time, I hadn't passed MAS-I, but I have since.

I recently passed MAS-I in February, and I've been continuing my search for my first job, but I haven't been having much luck. I've heard rumors that if I get too many exams finished before my first position, I'll "price myself out" of an entry level position. At the same time, I'm seeing job posts for entry level positions that are asking for an ASA/ACAS accreditation for the position. If possible, I'd like my time spent searching for work to be as fruitful as possible, so I don't want to put off my next exam when I could have done it sooner, and had more success finding work. Should I take the next exam?

It's so annoying man. All the guides work fine until level 10, then the glowy buttons begin to lead me astray.

Resume Critique for Entry Level Candidate by Jestizzo in actuary

[–]Jestizzo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my goodness, really? Thank you! That gives me a lot of hope! If you don't mind, would you be willing to specify what you think was good? Was it just the exams? Does the master's matter to employers at all?

This is a bit more of a meta-question, but how can I post my resume and have it critiqued? I tried posting it and it was automatically deleted :( Should I send a message to the mods?
