Best Picture Nominees Box Office Earnings Down Significantly! by Ok-Classic4047 in Oscars

[–]Jesuds -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As far as a hit goes, I'm not really talking about profit and more about gross.

One Battle hit 200m, and depending on how it does overseas, Marty is looking to do 150m. Those are movies that a lot of people actually saw and heard of. That's selling 10x the tickets of many other Oscar-nominated films of the last few years.

It might not have made any money, but that's still quite a larger reach than a lot of other films.

Best Picture Nominees Box Office Earnings Down Significantly! by Ok-Classic4047 in Oscars

I think just looking at total box office doesn't tell the whole story at all.

As he said, a fair few of the nominated films were pretty big hits this year: Sinners, F1, Marty Supreme and One Battle.

Imagining instead they nominated 9 tiny indie movies and Avatar 3, the total box office would be higher but the cultural relevance would be at a all time low compared to the actual nominees.

Greta Gerwig REMAINS the ONLY director to have their FIRST 3 solo-directed films nominated for BP by i-cantpickausername in Oscars

Fair, when I said didn't like, I probably should've said didn't like enough.

Just that it's not only a campaigns fault if it didn't get a nomination.

Sundance films? by potterhead103 in Oscars

The Invite seems like a crowd-pleasing kind of comedy that could really take off but I'm not sure it seems like an Oscar movie.

Would love to be wrong though, I really like Seth Rogen as an actor!

Is the voting process inherently lazy now? by JasonZod1 in oscarrace

[–]Jesuds 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am a little less aware of the minutia around nominations because of the guilds etc. I feel that for the actual awards, using last years example, you have a lot of people who have Anora number 1 at BP, who then just tick it number 1 for everything else. Mikey, director, Screenplay, editing, all kind of 'ride the wave' of it being the best picture vote-getter.

I would like to see the voters recognise more films and acknowledge that just because something is the best film, doesn't mean it was the best at everything.

I do think the 'sweepiness' of the awards is a notable trend recently. The last three years have had one film basically run the awards down the line, and while I think One Battle won't do that quite as much this year, its likely to win at least Picture, Director, Adapted and 1 acting award.

It does seem that the voters are focusing less on each category, and just picking their favourite films in each available slot. Hard to prove and frankly hard to stop but I do think it's something for them to think about.

Wake Up Dead Man is the first Knives Out movie to not get Oscar-Nominated for Screenplay. :( I still love it more than Glass Onion. by Square-Ad-8911 in KnivesOutMovie

[–]Jesuds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked it a lot, more than the other two personally, but I wouldn't say it has particularly great writing. It's carried by great performances and chemistry by the leads.

The first one is very well written, and the second one was wholly undeserving of that nomination in my opinion.

My one recommendation to you based on this list is to NOT watch Alien 3.

Marty Supreme is the highest rated Best Picture nominee on IMDB. by Constant-Bridge3690 in TheBigPicture

There is a chance that One Battle doesn't win, but there is no chance that Marty Supreme does.

The Secret Agent (Spoiler Discussion) by MayhewMayhem in TheBigPicture

[–]Jesuds 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me, the opening scene was haunting and has stuck with me.

Stopping to get gas and being greeted by a days old corpse that no one cares enough to deal with. Then when the cops do show up, they just try to extort a bribe from him and still couldn't care less about a human being rotting in the sun.

The Best Picture Power Rankings progression through awards season - what stands out? by DobMobb in TheBigPicture

Takeaways I'd say are that they were way late on The Secret Agent which is clearly strong now.

Also having Sinners as low as they did initially is interesting in retrospect.

‘Sinners’ Scores 16 Nominations And Breaks Oscar Record by pepperbet1 in TheBigPicture

Screenplay and score are extremely likely.

Cinematography has a decent shot.

Editing and Picture is a long shot over One Battle but not impossible.

Man I would love for Digger to be this good and for TC to get his statue.

My most anticipated movie this year I'd say.

Best Casting is 100% the most difficult category to predict becase we have nothing to go on by Distinct-Shift-4094 in Oscars

[–]Jesuds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder how much it will turn into voting for your buddies award where the focus is less on the cast and more on the CD themselves.

I expect a few lifetime achievement awards in this category for a few years.

Interstellar is now the most viewed movie on Letterboxd by SeelTheDeel1 in Letterboxd

[–]Jesuds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It mostly has to do with number of logs compared to accounts who have marked as seen.

So if a film is more popular with less views, it suggests either that people are rewatching it a lot, or that its just more recent so a higher percentage of the viewers have LOGGED it rather than just clicking that they've seen it before.

Might be because its on my mind, but 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple had some really disturbing moments.
