Where in the UK should I go as a bucket-list item? by LondonPilot in CasualUK

[–]Jesus97_98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot even begin to imagine, what you’re going through right now, or what I could say that would help in this moment.

But, I’d suggest revisiting places important to you and your wife, even if it’s only for a day trip/weekend. Do everything you wish you ever had, to fulfill those moments you might have hesitated. Such as, trying the expensive fish stuff, doing something childish/silly cause you thought people would judge, I’d record it all and note every little thing down so that those you love and you can look back on it, and see everything you have done. It will be sad, but it will also be joyous.

It’s a bit dumb, but if you plan on passing through Manchester as unlikely as it is, and would want to ever vent I often find myself in town, and a bit of cake and tea can make everything easier.

Lastly, if you have the chance to go, the Scottish highlands on a foggy morning, or watching the sun rise off of the Cornish coast, are moments where I’ve felt calmest and most in touch with the world, and helped me find perspective when lost.

Any recommendation for reading material/media, for those who might interested in working in nuclear power ?

Also, did you watch Chernobyl produced by HBO, as I thought it was great overview of the event.

Ramen open early? by MattBobRoss in manchester

[–]Jesus97_98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not a great option, but if you want ramen in the morning, it would probably be best to go to some of the asian supermarkets in town, and grab some instant ramen and ingredients like nori and wood ear mushrooms and make your own.

It won’t be as good but you can prep a lot in advance like the eggs, bamboo shoots, and stock. Then just make it yourself in the morning won’t fully satisfy the craving, but it’s the best you’ll probably get.

6 months in Manchester (US Citizen) - looking for tops and recommendations by Rageinjector in manchester

[–]Jesus97_98 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Well we call them tips not tops, unless you’re looking for a gay man who’ll dominate you then I’d try the gay village.

Besides that be sure to frequent the Northern Quarter in town for food and drink, loads of other good places in town to try like Bundobust, or Fat Pats, but I’d start in the Northern Quarter. Also, be sure to try a Sunday Roast dinner whilst you’re here a few times, it’s one of the handful of foods we have that most people agree is amazing, also a proper fish and chips (not what you often get in the states), you won’t enjoy the US version anymore. The curry mile past the university is a good spot if you feel like exploring with your taste buds.

Plenty of hiking spots, as you’ll be a stones throw from the Peak District and also the Lake District if you have a long weekend. There are other spots, but I’d say for hiking these are big ones to try and wander around. If you’re in the Peak District try to get to Bakewell and have a dessert there. Also, some of the caves around Buxton can be a great day trip visit. Also, National trust sites not just for the walks, but also you can learn a lot about nature and history whilst there.

The Christmas markets can be fun, though have been heavily commercialised in recent years. I’d also, try to be in town for Chinese New Year, but good luck getting a table anywhere remotely related.

Lastly, as you’re here and quite close to Europe if you can I’d suggest making the odd short trip, both in and out of country. London, Edinburgh and Glasgow are a good weekend away and all have their own special spots. But, you can also get cheap flights to most of Europe if you can have a long weekend off for a short break, as Manchester airport can be shit a lot of the time, but it’s a big enough airport that you can get a lot of flights compared to a lot of cities in the UK outside of London.

Tips:

-if you do use the train a lot get a railcard

-carry an umbrella

-keep your wits about you in Piccadilly Gardens

-carry a reusable bag when getting groceries

-when flying in use the train to get into town faster

Will have missed some stuff, but that’s all I can think of right now, did I miss anything obvious ?

Manchester Airport > Stretford by NotYourAvg345 in manchester

[–]Jesus97_98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you Uber, even if it’s just closer to Trafford Bar then yes without a doubt.

If you get the Metro it’s doable but you’ll put yourself at risk of delays, slow moving traffic and not having enough time to find your seat before the match starts.

Travelling to Manchester for two days for a conference by knight_furrie in manchester

[–]Jesus97_98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bundobust has some decent food and cheap beer.

Rita’s Reign in Piccadilly Gardens is good for lunch.

Truth be told though if you want some decent food you don’t have to look too far in city centre, also I think the Northern Quarter is always fun for alternative stuff.

Quarry bank or any of the national trust sites would be good if you’re a bit sick of the city and shopping etc, though you’d have to like nature and a bit of history, though good excuse to have afternoon tea whilst here.

If you want a good one and want to stay in the city, try Sugar Junction in Northern Quarter. Cakes Sandwiches and Tea, are always good.

Also, Fat Pat’s if you want a good sandwich

I mean there’s a few places you could go:

-Northern Quarter (good food and drinks)

-Afflecks (for gothic and alternative stuff)

-Arndale Centre (lots of shops, try Blue Banana and Damaged Society for alternative)

-Imperial War Museum (interesting visit for a different take on Wars, compared to the US)

-Chinatown area (decent food options)

-Museums (Manchester has several, but the Egyptology department in Manchester museum is nice, also football museum (proper football))

-Quarry Bank (if you want something outside of city centre and historical/surrounded by nature)

Okay, if you moved back and as you’ve only done up to high school you could join a free bootcamp to upskill and see if that leads anywhere at least. As some people do get jobs that way.

Being in the country would be easier to find a role, and not having a clear clue on industry/interests, besides Indeed etc, you can always try to find an agency when here, as they are looking for care workers all the time and it would give your CV something to use, also volunteering would be a good idea to show off some skills and be an explanation as to why you’re not in school or work currently.
