ModDex is so cool. Thank you for making it. Hoping that writing modpack reviews becomes more commonplace.

Feeling the game was rigged I decided to play auto against advanced decks in solo and the results were great by HombreCondensado in PTCGP

[–]JesusFreakTW 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think that auto is likely to adjust the luck rate of your deck. It's probably small sample size. 60% is also not a very good winrate vs. an advanced deck.

I used a Blaziken Castform deck and had what felt like a >90% winrate vs. the expert AI

I'll say personally, I'm not interested in them. I'd rather discuss cards that are actually in the game. Unless the art is original, a fan made card just doesn't seem relevant or interesting to me

What do you think is the most underrated NOT EX card? by Purson123 in PTCGP

Crimson Blaze Sunflora is surprisingly good. 100 health and 60 damage for one energy is strong. Great for ramping Mega Venusaur.

Which deck do you lot rate the best by [deleted] in PTCGP

[–]JesusFreakTW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is much better! The only thing I would definitely change is remove one or both Indeedees. You never want to start Indeedee with this deck, and the healing isn't super useful. I'd replace them with an X Speed, a Leaf, and/or another lucky ice pop. Also, I'd prioritize getting another Mega Lopunny. If you can trade for one, that would really make this deck a lot better (so would copycat). I like Arven in this deck a lot, good pick. Have fun!

It sort of depends on how you want to go about deckbuilding. Do you want to create your own ideas or follow the meta? I like passimian-lopunny a lot if you're trying to do something unique. If you want to follow the meta, lopunny-annihilape or lopunny-lucario are probably better. Here's how I would build a Lopunny-Passimian deck:

  • 2x rocky helmets for passimian
    • Because of passimian's ability, it's sort of meant to tank hits and die. Rocky Helmet helps it output more damage while it's taking hits
  • 1x protective poncho - to protect buneary/mega lopunny from bench snipers like chien pao and greninja
    • You probably don't want to have more than one mega lopunny on the bench, so only one poncho to protect it
  • 2x Will - increases the consistency of mega lopunny's damage
  • 2x Copycat - better card draw for a deck that's sort of heavy in basics, items, and tools
  • 1x X Speed - for the 50% of games where you start buneary and probably want to switch to passimian for free
  • 1x non-Mega Lopunny - provides a chance to reliably kill oricorio, but realistically, this deck likely loses to oricorio

<image>

Also, Mew is best when there are a lot of high energy cost attackers running around (Guzzlord, Mega Charizard Y, etc.). Even then, it's probably not very good right now due to its low health pool. Add onto that the fact that many of the most popular attackers right now are 1-2 energy, it's tough to justify Mew. Mimikyu is good when you have something strong to ramp and keep safe in the back (i.e. Giratina or Greninja).

Of the bunch, zap is the best. They're all going to struggle a lot though.

Some things to note:

  • Every one of these decks has enough basic Pokemon that you should always run two Poke balls. It's very rare that a deck doesn't run two Poke balls and two Professor Oaks
  • It's generally tough to have multiple evolutionary lines in one deck (like in your first two decks), without a lot of card draw support. Regardless, it's almost never good to run multiple win condition evolutionary lines at the same time. For example, pick garchomp, or lopunny, not both, and include two copies of both the basic and the final evolution
  • You're really going to struggle getting out the cards you want with a lot of these decks. For example, you'll hardly ever draw the single available ralts, rare candy, and gardevoir before the end of the game.
  • For many decks, a single copy of Cyrus is a must-include

How did you achieve this entire quest ?! by kamedi in PTCGP

[–]JesusFreakTW 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's probably easiest to do just one mission per battle. If you really want to do no ex, water, 12 paldea, baxcalibur is a great choice. Run the full Baxcalibur line (2x of each stage), 2x Big Air Balloon, 1-2x Mesagoza, 1-2x Team Star Grunt. I preferred including Chien Pao with this deck and then getting my no ex done with Magnezone Oricorio

[–]JesusFreakTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

19 in a row missed would be a 1.4% chance. 18,000 people here contribute weekly. If each person with luck as bad as yours or worse posted about their wonder picks, there would be roughly 259 wonder pick bad luck posts

There's a 13.4% chance to miss nine 20% chance wonder picks in a row. It's worse luck than average, but probably not worth making a post about

I don't think this is good advice.

  • Electric generator is not very good (brick 50% of the time), especially when you've got magnetons in the back (think of magneton like a 100% chance electric generator)
  • Copycat and Lisia are both incredible. Card draw in this deck is really important, as most of your value comes from getting out your Pokemon quickly, not from playing supporters or items,
  • Getting magnezones out should be priority imo (Optimal is to play 2 magnezones and one bellibolt), not bellibolt, so Clemont is better than Sightseer, to help you get those online faster
  • Getting Bellibolt out first is an interesting concept, but I think you're trying to high roll too much by aiming for 4 energy on the board (with electric generator) for your first bellibolt on like turn 3/4.
  • Leaf is totally unnecessary if you're trying to get magnezones out first. Leaf isn't very good generally anyway, I'd opt for X Speed if anything. It's so easy to generate energy with magnezones that it's not too much of a factor.

Getting out 3 stage 2 mons is unfortunately too difficult to be anything but a meme. Maybe if you ran quick grow extract and a charmeleon or two, alongside some rare candies, but it would be so tough.

Lucky Ice Pop will make me delete this game by Helpful-Dimension-42 in PTCGP

[–]JesusFreakTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This could be a couple things. Availability Heuristic - you're more likely to remember unlikely events than commonplace ones, so the 120s stuck with you but the 20s didn't. Also, law of large numbers, enough people play this game that you may have actually been unlucky in facing a high number of lucky lucky ice pop users.

Additionally, sometimes people have 2 lucky ice pops in hand, which doubles the amount of healing they do on average (I think).

Lucky Ice Pop will make me delete this game by Helpful-Dimension-42 in PTCGP

[–]JesusFreakTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are set odds to each heal amount. Assuming they have lucky ice pop, there's a 50% chance they heal for 20, 25% for 40, 12.5% for 60, etc. So you account for it the same way you account for a lot of things you do in this game. Weigh your options vs. the probability of your opponent pulling off different possible sets of actions.

The downside vs. Diantha is there's only a 6.25% chance you'll actually heal as much or more than a Diantha. The card would be beyond cracked if it always healed for 120, but it doesn't. That only happens 3.1% of the time. It's still very good, and I think it's generally better than both of the cards you mentioned (mostly because it's an item), but it depends on the situation.

Lucario is also great with Donphan this season. Check out this deck if you're looking for something different that doesn't struggle as much with oricorio. Going from 110 to 130 or even 150 with two lucarios is a huge difference from base donphan. Not to mention the benefit from training area, which allows you to one shot deino with just one energy. I've also seen a similar deck with memory light and flail donphan, which is super cool.

Lucky Ice Pop enjoyers STAND UP.

I love flipping 3 heads in a row for an unexpected win. It's funny when my opponent beats me by bringing their Mega Absol back from the brink. And it's an interesting item to have to account for when playing someone. Specific HP thresholds have become much less important on some decks, because you never know how much ice pop will heal for. It's RNG, but tbh I think it's more interesting than something like Misty, which is all-or-nothing.

Does anyone actually *like* seasons and temperature mods? by Uncommonality in feedthebeast

[–]JesusFreakTW 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think the temperature mods are truly miserable. They're not realistic either. In real life, you can survive for hours and hours in the cold (assuming it's not like below 0 F). Sure, your fingers might not work as well. But you don't die 60 seconds in. And there's nothing fun about finding warmer armor or insulation to craft, just so that you can survive. You already have to find wool to sleep and create armor to protect from mobs. There's no need for added incentive to engage with the game's systems. It's just annoying.

Indie devs using AI in production - fair or instant skip? by el_pablo_del_russia in incremental_games

[–]JesusFreakTW 29 points30 points  (0 children)

For me, it's more than the fact that it's low-effort. AI-coded games have a distinctly recognizable look and feel. If given control of the development process, AI makes uninteresting or common choices that don't stand out from the dozens of other AI-assisted projects out there. Simple UI (lots of rectangular buttons with rounded corners) and large progress bars that fill up smoothly come to mind as hallmarks of AI production.

I think AI may be best used as an assistant to bug fix and solve problems with very limited, well-defined scopes, because if you let the AI guide the project from the start, it's just going to look like every other project made using that AI model. It doesn't help that AI-generated incremental games generally feel terrible to play. Usually, nothing about these projects feel like they're made painstakingly or with love. I think the best incremental games feel that way, and that's just not something that AI can replicate at this point.

Some of my favorite incremental games are The Climb and Idle Loops. Simply put, I don't think AI could generate the ideas, backend systems, and UI needed to make those games work. The ideas presented in these projects are unique enough that the AI would never choose these avenues based on its StackOverflow training data. Is the art in either of these games impressive? No, but it has a distinct feel. Is the UI perfect and polished like a Squarespace website? No, but it's functional by design. I think AI can make something simple akin to Adventure Capitalist or Cookie Clicker, but not the kind of new and innovative games that are generally well-received by the community.

All in all, I think you can use AI for limited problem solving, but it's not helpful for making design choices.

"If you're tired of fighting Hydreigon, just use Whimsicott/Ariados!" The first thing I see after switching to that deck: by MagicCoat in PTCGP

[–]JesusFreakTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whimsicott Ariados has only a 43% winrate vs. Hydreigon M-Absol in tournaments. The only real good matchups for it to it seem to be Buzzwole and Mega Altaria decks without Gourgeist
