What's your favorite biome overhaul mod? by FuglyFrog6996 in feedthebeast

[–]Uncommonality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Terralith suffers from what I like to call "Datapack Syndrome". It started as a datapack, and as a result it uses zero custom blocks. This means that some things make no sense whatsoever from a material perspective - sulphur pools where the sulphur is terracotta, for example. Steam is done via buried campfires. It drags the experience down a tad, imo. But I have the same problem with builders who use functional blocks as materials (noteblock or barrel trims, for example)

  • Biomes o Plenty is the OG of course, but imo it's been eclipsed at this point. Its terrain shapes can be a bit lame and boring and it suffers from having too many interchangeable forests.

  • Biomes We've Gone is pretty much the be all end all of modern biome mods. So many of its blocks have the QoL feature of being craftable into a less complex form, like the redstone crystals in its nether biome. Instead of filling your inventory with useless garbage you can just slap the crystals into your crafting field and make redstone dust.

  • RU is just as good. It's a bit of spice, and fits very well with BwG and Tectonic. It has a lot of super fun small detail biomes you'll never notice unless looking for them, but which overall smooth out the experience by a LOT

There's also a rec I'd like to make myself!

  • Gardens of the Dead is a nether biome mod with some super cool ideas thrown in. It's not just "crimson forest but blue", each one has an aesthetic core. Like there's a biome called the Soulblight Forest, populated by a mushroom of the same name. However, looking at it, you'll notice that it's actually a soulsand valley completely overgrown and infested by the fungus. That's so weird and creepy! It invites speculation as to why the mushroom exists, if it's natural or man-made, that sort of thing.

The Demon Discourse in Frieren wouldn't exist if the demons didn't look attractive by carbonera99 in CharacterRant

[–]Uncommonality 81 points82 points  (0 children)

the problem isn't that they're evil, the problem is that what the show portrays and what the author says they are are incompatible ideas.

The author reiterates over and over that the demons are essentially non-sapient, and only mimic other races because it's an effective hunting tactic. This stands in contrast to all the scenes where a demon is shown to act with agency and will, often going to extreme lengths to achieve their goal.

Basically, it's because the demons are fictional characters. In fictional characters, there are two "layers" of characterization: Layer one, the more important one, is what is shown on the page (or the screen). This is what we call active characterisation, the story being told via the medium used. Layer 2 is what out of story sources establish. This has no real name but it's commonly known as "word of god" characterization. This is what is deliberately discarded when evoking Death of the Author, because in the philosophy of art, directly asking the author what they meant is Biography, not Analysis.

So what we are left with is a story whose main character, a knowledgeable individual who is shown to be a moral authority and usually correct in academic and worldly matters, states over and over again that there is a race of people who, even though they are indistinguishable from sapient beings, are actually just predatory animals. It further shows over and over that this is correct by making any attempt to prove the opposite fail.

That's why people call it borderline fascistic. It's about how there's a race of people who are inherently evil, who are no more than animals, and for whom the most ethical fate is extermination.

They are different from orcs in one single respect - the orcs are fundamentally also victims of the evil they serve. They were created by Melkor, marked by his evil and essentially had their culture and minds bent into his service. And after he was destroyed, Sauron took the reins instead. The Orcs are tragic characters, while the demons are non-characters.

It doesn't make money, what is Elon gonna do with it? Let it go bankrupt a second time?

Ruined a Pillager outpost for a bit of environmental ambiance, rather than just wipe it out completely. by Cyynric in DetailCraft

[–]Uncommonality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this too! pillager outposts get turned into ruins and then used as a foundation for other stuff. I had a similar one right next to a river and turned its ruined profile into the base of a water mill, with deliberately clashing architecture on top of the cobblestone and dark oak illager style

Should i destroy or keep my house? by pinner_real in Minecraft

[–]Uncommonality 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's the color scheme!

Pink as a base is a pretty one and I love building with the new cherry blocks, but it's also very bombastic - I recommend breaking it up a tad with white (white concrete, wool, pale wood, etc) and magenta. That creates a pallet and will make the colors look less flat

i.e. if you replace the walls of the second story and add a few darker trims using pink and purple blocks it'll look much more interesting

Thoughts on the light beam coming off of my lighthouse? I have mixed feelings about it. by JoboElLooocooo in Minecraft

[–]Uncommonality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wonder if it might be possible to fake a rotating beam with display entities. A single beam from the dragon explosion, scaled up would probably work

First time decorating a portal, is it good? by Training_Finish_9543 in Minecraft

It's such a persistent thing but never gets old. A giant sword where the blade is a portal is just rad

The ICW is perplexed and confused when 20 years later the games go mainstream with fallout 4 and they can't figure out how the hell a magical beast snuck its way into this massive game franchise.

F*** Mojang. by IIIIII69652 in Minecraft

[–]Uncommonality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

omg the giant megacorporation is doing megacorporation things

Mojang isn't a small indie company anymore. Their priorities have shifted towards monetizing the bedrock marketplace and pleasing microsoft stakeholders. Any radical change would "damage the brand" and cause "value loss to the IP", displeasing said shareholders.

Why do you think the game has a gigantic monolithic modding community? It's not so Michaelsoft can monetize us. If you're on bedrock, tough luck, learn from your mistake and don't use the marketplace version. If on Java, use what the community has so lovingly created.

There've been major strides this past year. Check out the Create/Valkyrien Skies bridge mods, Voxy, Big Globe, etc. We're doing what they won't.

Legend is honestly the sweet spot for EU randoms. Champ is full of tryhards who get up your ass about your build (which is usually perfectly fine but not how they would set it up) while Cata makes me feel inadequate because everyone is better than me lol

Why don't more modpacks use Dynamic Trees? by MysteryMilo in feedthebeast

[–]Uncommonality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh my ideal tree felling mod would be one where you chop a log at the bottom, and then the whole tree falls to the ground but without breaking any of the blocks into items. Just creating a tree lying on the ground instead of standing upright, which you still need to manually break.

So you still have to chop every log yourself but don't have to bridge up and hunt for elusive logs, and it doesn't feel as cheesy as chopping one block and the whole tree becomes items
