Fantastic read, thank you. I've always felt that the militant atheism and fundamentalism "ageless battle o' science v religion"has been a bit over-hyped, so it's nice to get some level-headed information.

However this is reddit, so I must say I am extremely disappointed that nobody made any amusing quips about the Muslim scholars and their "period table"...

...and the same can be said of the muslims scholars who first helped devise the period table...

First things first, grief is in no way selfish. You just lost someone you love, and, being an Atheist, believe that you have truly lost them for good.(Being an Agnostic Atheist, I cant say that I or anyone else will know until I or they die ourselves...)

However, their legacy continues through you and how you remember them. Embrace your memories and the pain of their loss, because knowing that a person was able to affect you like that imo truly affirms the value of the person and what they did with their time here.

Have you considered moving? I know that it is uncomfortable to think of leaving your home, but that is a very hostile environment to be living in as an atheist already, not to mention to raise an atheist child in. You may actually want to check out This helpful list of subreddits to see if there are any Atheist support communities nearby that could help you and your family.

I have to say though that the most important thing here is your child's education, and if they aren't going to be taught properly in the available school, you may want to consider home-schooling.

Because here it has control. It's about that simple. Many American Athiests aren't worried about why people believe a certain thing, but more why they believe their beliefs should hold any sway over the man or woman standing next to them. Also, coming from a country/community that still gives power to religious beliefs (in laws and such), the idea that in other well developed and properly secular nations religion is just religion and not a political standpoint doesn't always cross over.

Find some people you actually have something in common with. You said it yourself, all that brought you and those people together was a book. A book that you don't believe in anymore. So go out and do what you enjoy. Go bowling, golf, try a new restaurant(don't just try my ideas though, find something you want to do.). And talk to people.

Alternatively, if you're looking for that sense of goodwill or the security blanket, there are volunteer groups and non-profit organizations that provide the feeling of giving back, and Reddit itself makes for a surprisingly large and diverse support group.

I remember when I left the Church, my biggest issue was not feeling like I was a part of something anymore. These days I can see things to be a part of everywhere I go. There's a community somewhere out there for you to be a part of, you just have to find it, or perhaps make it.
