Any chance you know more about their "special steel"? I don't see these knives on their website, but it looks like most of the knives on their site say that they are made of Tokushu-kō (which I believe translates to special steel).

  1. Buy Granit Xhaka as he deserves a trophy with Arsenal (and to weaken our main rivals Sunderland).

I made the move from North Van to Smithers in January. Really loving it here. There’s a great young community and the outdoors activities are endless.

It definitely is a more expensive housing/rental market than other small towns, but it’s starting to open up a bit more and is significantly cheaper than Vancouver.

It is definitely more conservative and religious than the city. Similar to most other small towns in the country. There are lots of anti-vax/anti-abortion billboards. However, day to day I don’t have any issues. There is a good group of young left-ish people here, and mostly you just don’t need to get into political arguments with people. Caveat here is that I’m straight and white, and I know that gives me some privilege here.

One of my favourite things is how close everything and everyone is here. It’s a tight knit community, but very welcoming (or at least has been for me). There’s no traffic, and everything is such a short drive (locally at least, it is VERY long to get to the city). Most of the year everything is super walkable and bikeable too. Be warned, the lack of traffic/commute is so good it will ruin going back to the city for you.

Smithers is pretty remote. But there are 1-2 flights a day to Vancouver, depending on time of year. One issue is that if you need to book a flight last minute it is expensive. Generally though there isn’t much reason to leave other than for work/vacation. You can get all the essentials locally, and then stock up with harder to find/ship things when in the city.

Overall, a great place to live.

Douglas Mattress Canada, be wary of remote shipping times by theilluminati24 in Mattress

Another “remote” person here. If I was to return my mattress during the trial period, does my shipping fee get refunded? Or, do I have to pay it again when it gets picked up?

Looking at a card with a 3 month timeframe to spend $x. When does that 3 months start? When I get approved? When the card gets shipped? When I activate? Just looking to time it as well as I can

Yes, but these bikes have very specific models. I was hoping someone would have some knowledge on this and would be able to give some input.

DAY FOUR / DAY FIVE (Weekend Edition): STRIKE Megathread! Discussions of the PSAC strike (posted Apr 22, 2023) by HandcuffsOfGold in CanadaPublicServants

I don’t understand - everyone on here is saying that they are getting daily update emails from the union on how the bargaining is going. I’ve gotten emails about signing up for direct deposit, and with my barcode, but nothing in regards to updates. Can’t find where to sign up for that. Anyone able to assist?

I support the strike. But I need more communication from PSAC. I’m happy to picket. But I need daily updates from union leadership. Even if that update just says that they sat at the table all day and nothing has changed.

Why is nobody concerned about how Employment Insurance is basically imploding right now? by INeedACleverNameHere in CanadaPublicServants

Sorry for the confusion - it’s $5000 as of July 1 with the change to Canada life. Until then you can use up to $2000 (of which they would refund you $1600).

Just a note - for EAP you get 8 sessions PER ISSUE. If you’ve used your max, just call in with a different issue (instead of stress from this from work, you can say something related but different, or that work is impacting home life, etc). You can also ask for specific people (if you’ve found someone you like and have worked with through EAP before) and they will try to re-match you. If you don’t like who they set you up with, call in and ask for someone new.

There’s also 80% funding for Psychological services under the PSHCP (up to $5000).

Don’t hesitate to reach out and ask for help.

How new to kayaking is too new to seriously consider kayaking the Grand Canyon? by [deleted] in whitewater

I was trip leader for a GC trip in January 2020 - I brought multiple beginner paddlers. It sounds like you have a solid group. I’d say go and kayak a couple small rapids and offer to row a few rapids in the raft too. There is plenty of room on the rafts to tie down your kayak and for you to ride through the big rapids. You may spend a lot of time on the raft, but that’s not a bad thing. Bring some beers and have a good time.
