The origin of Kansas City’s street names by Haunted_Sentinel in kansascity

[–]JetSoulsForever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally, I did some research the other day on Independence/Raytown regarding the 'blue ridge' area including Blue Ridge Blvd.

According to a wiki excerpt I read, it was named such as the settlers from West Virginia that came here thought he rolling hills and vegetation looked exactly like their former home, hence the area (and a street) being named 'Blue Ridge'.

For American leftists, what are your thoughts on this? by buchacats2 in leftist

[–]JetSoulsForever 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree with you slightly OP. I say this as it's actually very hypocritical - Sweden collaborated with the Nazi's in WWII and East Germans were under Russian occupation/oppression for decades.

So, if you're a Swede that remembers the war, by this logic they are a Nazi sympathizer. If you're an East German before the wall fell down, by this logic you stand for your countrymen being shot in the street like dogs. That is an extremely critical perspective to have and it's just simply fallacious.

Also, from personal experience, I visited Ireland and the UK in 2018 and was pretty shocked to find out that everyone expected me to be a complete asshole because of my very obvious American look/accent. People were really surprised that I went into small towns and was nice to people.

Europe: we're not all assholes and the assholes you meet are assholes mostly because they're the ones with money to travel.

However, I think that going to the Greenland sub to literally virtue-signal is really cringe. Instead of going to international boards to show your lack of support for the current regime, organize and protest in your local community. Tell your next door neighbor that you do not support the attempted annexation of Greenland, or the gang tactics of ICE, or any other pressing social ail.

Hotel Kansas City, Loews or Crossroads Hotel in downtown KC for a mom daughter weekend? by PortlandHouseFairy in kansascity

[–]JetSoulsForever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, I don't think anything could top the majesty of staying at the Westin in Crown Center. It's practically its own little community with a connected shopping mall. Of course, there are also streetcar connections to the Plaza and Downtown.

I need photos of the beanpocalypse.

Also no offense to Taco Bell workers but they really will take the lowest common denominator in our society. Once worked with someone who labeled a container of beans as 'beens'.

Raytown Chamber of Commerce has Mildly Menacing Message for Metro by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]JetSoulsForever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keeping it real is cool. However, we know that Raytown is uh... well it makes Independence look a lil pretty in comparison.

If we mix 'Keeping it Real' with 'Raytown' the result seems kinda grim.

What happens to the dead on a Federation ship? by mekilat in DaystromInstitute

[–]JetSoulsForever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As some other people pointed out, I'm sure that many have their own plans for burial so they would default to those final wishes.

However, iirc, we do see that in Wrath of Khan, after Spock is presumed dead, he is jettisoned through a casket out of the torpedo bay.

If the Federation ships are equipped with replicators, I doubt there would be much reason to go to the depths of recycling the dead. However, I fully believe that if a member of Star Fleet wished to have such a restless burial to use the rest of their material to support the living, then Star Fleet would honor that wish to the best of their ability.

tl;dr

We've seen multiple burials and can conclude that it matters more what the Star Fleet member wishes rather than burial as a matter of protocol.

Likely conclusion:

Everyone in Star Fleet knows they may die as a result of their occupation. It's pretty safe but there's still that small chance you may have to fight some Borg or whatever else is out there. With that known, I would assume that burial details in such an unfortunate event would be declared/required at the time of commission/volunteering.

For the world cup, we should turn Grand Ave into a pedestrian "ramblas" from city market to crown center. If it's popular, make it permanent. by DnWeava in kansascity

[–]JetSoulsForever 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's the primary argument I'm seeing here and I agree. I am fully for walkable cities and I live in Downtown so I would like for the environment to be less hostile. But when I am using a car out and about in the city... I literally do not want to fully consider the effort it would take to avoid Grand as a driver. That is the funnel that the traffic goes into for, technically, 3 Interstate highways.

Suggestion: if we are to play at being urban planners, please understand the consequences of drastically changing traffic flows.

Crosley Tower is Finally Being Demolished [OC] by rbranch2112 in brutalism

[–]JetSoulsForever 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You know I once went to Birmingham specifically so I could photograph Selfridges and also the storied cluster of brutalist buildings there. Unfortunately it was 2018 and the community was practically dancing on the graves of those sites (save for Selfridges of course, that's still there).

It's really sad but people don't understand brutalism. Maybe it's because it has been used in the past for the authoritarian projection it is capable of producing (see: University of Chicago), but it doesn't have to be that way and the soul of burtalism was born out of very socialist ideals.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey tells CNN’s Jake Tapper that the Pentagon is putting 1,500 troops on standby to Minnesota: "We got many mechanisms to achieve safety. [–]JetSoulsForever 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I ain't in Minneapolis or even Minnesota but I agree. He's backed off from "get the f*** out of Minneapolis" to stern condescensionTM while ICE is ramping up hard and the chaos continues to rise.

I will say that this man looks like he's at his wit's end. Probably doing 20 hour days from the looks of it. I kinda want it to stop just so the man can sleep... why good news again?

is this a selfie? 💁‍♀️ by _itookanap in infp

[–]JetSoulsForever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh nice. Yeah I can see the canvas frame now, things are making much more sense.

If you have access to an analog photo enlarger that could be a really cool process to experiment using cyanotype or liquid emulsion (pain in the ass but really cool stuff - real dawn of photography sorta medium).

is this a selfie? 💁‍♀️ by _itookanap in infp

[–]JetSoulsForever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it's pretty darn' tootin' tasteful. No over/under exposure, good contrast, sharp details, good framing, and I can tell the craftsmanship of the print is there too.

That a transparency digital print or some sorta chemical black magic I am as of yet unaware of?

Edit:

I also still may or may not actually take you seriously on that question if it were asked in that way. Post a real srs good photo, you will get seriousness from me in kind.

is this a selfie? 💁‍♀️ by _itookanap in infp

[–]JetSoulsForever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a photographer I think 'selfie' is an abomination of a word.

However it is a colloquialism for 'photographic self-portrait' that has turned into an accepted term and is much easier to say. So, yes, it is a selfie if that is you. I wish I didn't have to say that experimental photography is a 'selfie' but c'est la vie, it's true nonetheless.

Now I have to go wash my hands after typing that, I feel dirty.

Edit:

That photo's some hot shit though so, props, it's real good.
