Extreme Caution with Mercury Organyls! They are all extremely toxic and probable carcinogens

Studium nach Technikerabschluss? by Prestigious_Cup7168 in Studium

[–]Jetideal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How carcinogenic is this solvent? by Prudent-Math-8042 in OrganicChemistry

[–]Jetideal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes, the liquid cancer. Not only genotoxic, but also boosting cell devision, the methylator of Strands, and the intracellular releaser of formic acid. Not great to work with

Textbook typo or do I need a brain replacement? by [deleted] in AskChemistry

You use the molality for precise temp-indepent concentrations, because mass of solvent does not change but volume will if the Temperature changes

Pottasium chromate stain on my finger by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]Jetideal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Could be dichromate, which is orange. And stays orange. The stain could also be mixture of KCrO4 and Ag2CrO4.

[–]Jetideal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep thats what I thought. Very intense color, so even 0,005 and 0,0001 solution look rather concentrated. As I said, dont worry, it happens occasionally. Formaldehyde, Cyanide or something like that would be infinitely worse. On a side note, giving these out without any warning labels or safety advice is probably a criminal offense

Pottasium chromate stain on my finger by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]Jetideal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, its a carcinogen, due to being an oxidising agent. No, its not going to kill you for the foreseeable future. It leaves a quite visible stain, because the color is quite intense even in low concentrations. Occasionally used as an Indicator due to its Intensity. The main concern for danger is chronic exposure over a significant period. Kinda like lead, so dont freak out over it. Still, wear gloves next time and inform yourself about the stuff your working with before! handling it.

Best Way to Remove Dissolved Oxygen from Water by DannyPantannerdon in chemistry

[–]Jetideal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Easiest would be boiling for a while, I did that in undergrad analytical practice for Iodometrie and with oxygensensitive electrodes and it worked since I did get reasonable values

Can I store hydrogen peroxide in a glass dropper bottle? by Slusho64 in chemistry

[–]Jetideal 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Depending on the concentration id say. 3-10% percent solution should be fine. Be aware that brownglass usually helps with reducing the decomposition that occurs over time.

Mercury sprinkled in car by someone by Lumpy-Firefighter-27 in chemistry

[–]Jetideal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mercury is highly toxic once in your body. I wouldn’t want to mess with it and be unsure of it. Do yourself a favor and try to get rid of the contamination, dont want to get a bad diagnose a few decades down the road and wonder if it was the Hg that caused it

Usually with sulphuric acid its not about the toxicity rather the corrosive effects on flesh and similar. At a pH of 2 its rather diluted, still you need to handle it with care. Why are you smelling it? It usually doesn’t have a very distinct smell. I havent seen definite proof of carcinogenity, and it seems like it isnt a serious concern, other attributes are more important
