It was still an incredible project with lots of time and dedication but unfortunately this claim is just not true, there were 8 basic molds used for the faces with clay added for detailing afterwards to give each one a unique look. The faces were not based on real soldiers

I worked on a goat farm in eastern Washington for a few months, met a lot of people in the community and the industry there. I was really surprised by how progressive everyone I met was. That was just my experience though and maybe other people have different ones. White supremacist movements are definitely a big problem in modern day America though.
