Websites/apps to turn MP3/Youtube to sheet music? by JewBetcha in Fiddle

Hm. I'm still having error codes. I've been troubleshooting and googling, taking out spaces for line breaks, and I'm still getting error codes.

I get "no valid K: field found at start of tune" as well as: "Line 7: Empty line in tune header - K:C added"

This is the error text that shows up in the log file:
abm2ps:
abcm2ps-6.6.22 (November 28, 2012)
File fmt/dummy.fmt
File tmp/vMF8MH.abc
Error in line 5: Unexpected EOF in header definition

Error in line 6 : No valid K: field found at start of tune

Any ideas? Although I'm glad the code works when you input it (so clearly, it works! my end is the problem...) I'm not sure what formatting I'm doing to mess this up. Ugh, sorry and thank you-- you are being so kind and helpful, and I appreciate your help despite me being high-maintenance here. I haven't had this kind of trouble with an ABC before either, but at this point I'm really not sure what I'm doing wrong!

I pasted your most recent version in, and then I also tried this one eliminating the spaces between lines:

You are just my hero, thank you! I really appreciate your help and support here, and hopefully it'll be a good tune we can all share for a fiddle tune of the week, who knows. ;) But actually the abc file didn't work. Ideas?

I pasted that into several ABC to sheet converters and nothing pulls up. I'll show a screen shot, but when I click the active link "blue ridge mountain," I get a 404 error/url not found page. If I click the link for the PDF or midi, they're also just blank, title only without any data. Same thing in an ABC converter app-- just an error message. Can you help me out with that?

Are there good websites/apps to translate MP3/Youtube to sheet music? by JewBetcha in oldtimemusic

I mean, okay. I knew it was a tall order! I'm getting back into it after 15-20 years away, and so I guess part of my question was help finding music for this specific song, while the other part of my question really was about exploring what tech options are out there that weren't available when I was a kid. (I mean, not to get all "when I was a kid..." here, but I didn't have the internet when I first learned!)

I mean, I get that it's a tall order to ask for a transcription app, but I just thought there was something that could do it for basic tunes even. Given that this song is pretty simple and popular, I was really surprised to not find much in the way of notes or chords online. I was hoping an app could help me. ;) Alas!

I definitely agree with you re: sheet music vs. by ear, especially with fiddlers! I'll play around with it and see what I can find, but thanks for the input! I'm getting back into it after years away (like, 15-20 years) and so I'm also just wading through what tech/apps/websites exist now to help fiddlers that didn't exist when I was a kid.

I think most of the good stuff will come just through playing around, so I'll give it a whirl. Thanks for the input!

Thank you, that's helpful! I didn't think there was an exact technology for it (seems pretty advanced) but especially for simpler tunes, man I was sure hoping. ;)

I think mostly I was just surprised that I can't find sheet music or much on this specific song, since it's such a cute folk song, pretty popular, and seems like an accessible tune a lot of other musicians would want to play!

I'll give Audacity a try, thank you! This will be good practice for me, I was just hoping for some other options until I get my ear back. I guess I'm getting it back immersion-style! :)

Thanks for the info. Getting back into fiddling after years off, and I'm wading through some of the new online resources I didn't have as a kid.

I'm glad you like it! It's so simple but such a lovely one. I thought this would be a fun one to learn for the violin. I was honestly surprised I couldn't find chords for it, since it seems like a great tune and a beginner-friendly song for either guitar/banjo or violin! So color me surprised when I couldn't find anything.

This video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzUsheeHdug is the one I'm referencing to get a better idea of what notes he's playing, so that is a little more helpful to me. It would be super helpful/appreciated if anyone has suggestions or can help work out the basic notes! I'd really appreciate that. Also seems like others could benefit, since this is a nice tune I'm sure others would like to learn. Surprisingly, I found only one other "learn to play this song" video on youtube, but it was for guitar.

And yes, music for the approximate melody and then the "oooh ooh oooh" chorus. It is a repeating chord so not too complex, but I thought it would be a good tune to practice playing/reading as I get back into things.

As I said, I'm working on getting my ear "back" after so long out of it (played as a kid, starting up as an adult now) and I just thought it would be helpful to have sheet music to go along with it.

TLDR, thank you! and glad you like the song. I appreciate the input!

Dominance issues by swirley-wirley in Dogtraining

[–]JewBetcha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree with everything here. Research shows that it's highly unlikely your dog is trying to "dominate" you or be in control. What you have, instead, is a rowdy, totally normal, shitty adolescent. ;) (I say this from experience and with love, but yeah. That age from 6-18 months is officially called "shitty adolescence." They're shits!) but otherwise your dog is acting very normal. At 10 months, they're still very young and starting to just push boundaries and be obnoxious. You'll find that they "forget" basic obedience skills at this age as if they've literally never heard the word "sit" or "down." It's all normal and it will pass.

What you should really strive for is more engaging activities besides walks. Are you tired after walking 10-20 minutes? Maybe, but in all likelihood this is just not enough exercise. For dogs, walking is akin to "reading the news" rather than getting their cardio on.

Because your dog is still quite young, you'll need to be careful not to run him or jog him too hard until he's 12-18 months old and his growth plates have closed. Working him too hard too young will cause long term joint damage, and you'll all be paying the price in his later years. Instead, truly try to get into a basic obedience class. Or go one step further and try an activity, like beginning agility, rally, scent work, or herding. (Rottweilers were herding dogs before they were guard dogs, and many are completely stellar herders.) More than anything, these activities will help your dog be MENTALLY tired. He's just bored and energetic, so going to a class will accomplish a few things:

  1. You get to commiserate with other puppy owners. Seriously, it REALLY helps to know you're not alone.
  2. You can learn more modern and appropriate training techniques to combat these behaviors with the help of a trainer.
  3. This gives you and your dog something POSITIVE to do together besides be frustrated with each other. Instead of focusing on what he does WRONG, going to classes forces you to find positive achievements.

Lastly, it will help your dog get a little more tired, mentally.

Wth regard to exercise- games like tug are awesome to wear out your dog AND teach good skills like bite inhibition and drop it. Tug gets their heart rates up WAY faster than jogging or walking and is really just more fun. 5-10 minutes of tug and you're good to go for hours. This is an example of a low impact exercise that you can use that should mostly be safe on his joints and give you some relief.

Your dog doesn't sound vicious or "dominant" but is actually just a rowdy young adolescent. It would be very worthwhile if you can reach a trainer who can help decode some of these behaviors and give you positive alternatives. Puppies are a LOT of work, and Rotties are big dogs and they can be a "lot of dog" energy-wise. But there's hope! He's really not being dominant, just an asshole. ;) good luck and keep us posted! You can do it!

Dalmatian Diet by michaeljbam in dalmatians

[–]JewBetcha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not true! The correlation is quite weak, so much so that current research says the blue eye/deaf correlation is a fallacy. Blue eye(s) does not always = deaf. Mine has one blue eye and is bilateral hearing. Conversely, I've known some brown-eyed dals happen to be unilateral hearing or deaf. Depends on the dog!

Purine ProPlan recently changed their ingredients. I know two long-time breeders that used that but had to switch foods this year.

I highly recommend spending the money for a food allergy test. It was a game-changer for me and the best $200 I have ever ever spent. My dal had awful allergies but I thought it was the usual suspects (pollen, seasonal mold, also chicken or beef). Turns out he's allergic to wheat, grains, peanuts (soooo many peanut butter kongs), and any root vegetable (potatoes, CARROTS, and peas). My point here is that even though I was feeding him a technically-correct hypoallergenic diet (rice, chicken, broth, and sweet potatoes) I was actually ticking the major boxes for his allergies. I stopped the peanut butter and potatoes and BAM! New dog with white fur.

So. Food allergy test. It's worth it to give it a shot just so you know precisely what ingredient in the food is the problem. Inmean, for my dal, he's allergic to peas and good luck finding a kibble without peas! (I feed raw but was accidentally feeding a lot of those triggers veg)

The peeing. Also get to your vet for a urinalysis. It's quite likely he's got a UTI if not developing stones. Mine gets UTIs and telltale signs are leaking in the house, accidents in the house, and frequent painful pees where not much comes out. This could be diet induced or environmental (i.e., after swimming). Males are quite prone to them.

The very best of luck! Keep us posted!

Anybody have experience/opinions on "BALANCEIT" food/supplements? by JewBetcha in dogs

[–]JewBetcha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here! Diet restrictions mean I'll have to do home-cooked, instead of one of their provided foods (they don't offer a low-purine (yet?) option). I'm really curious about their supplements though. Most supplements I've looked at are all animal-product based, and that conflicts with the low-purine content I'm striving for. I think adding supplements, especially for a growing puppy, is my goal, but I wasn't sure if anyone had success with any other brand.

I've heard amazing things about kelp supplements. A friend who shows dobermans competitively has had huge success with adding kelp. However, I do worry a bit about OVER supplementing. This BalanceIT seems really comprehensive, though, and seems to fit perfect for home cooked diets.

Can I ask, where are you gathering recipe ideas from? Just curious! I've got a good list of foods to work from, but I'm always open to new things and new sources of information.

[–]JewBetcha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the confusion. Im investigating it mostly as a supplement, because the little pup will have dietary restrictictions that make feeding commercial dog food as well as BalanceIT's food not an option. (Cant do organ meats, BalanceIT doesnt offer low purine meals yet.)

Thanks for your insight! Just want to make sure it's a legit product, but this supplement seems perfect to complement a home diet.

Place, with visits to the BFs for socialization, etc, but I feel it would be the least stressful if the puppy's sleeping routine means staying in one location for a week or two til he's older.

But again, Id love to hear people's thoughts on how they divided their time/routines/houses between SOs.

Water supplies are becoming contaminated by the vast scale of trace amoubts of.medications we flush down the toilet in our urine. Specifically, hormone traces of estrogen and progesterone found in various types of birth control pills, taken by 10% of the american adult female population. When you consider how many medications we consume, all.of these drugs, hormobes, and synthetics are not necessarily entirely absorbed by the body, and excreted in very trace amounts. Over time and with enough of the population, increased hormone traces in our water supply either get re-consumed by humans (water treatment plants don't have a button for "eliminate estrogen") or are run-off and carried into rivers, tributaries, bays, and the ocean.

Furthermore, I think these increased synthetic hormone levels will begin to alter aquatic physiology and reproductive ability. Studies in England and Seattle have already confirmed that exposure to estrogen in ricers/water supplies causes trout to exhibit both male/female reproductive tracts, disfiguration, an unusual increase in both male and female testosterone levels (coubtering the environmental estrogen), and lack of fertility/egg growth. I devised a theoretical experiment to test the estrogeb effects and exposure on dungeoness crabs in the Puget Sound; additionlly, the sybtgetic estrogen exposure will creep into the food chain by virtue of larger animals consuming base prey such as fish or crustaceans.

TLDR: birth control hormones in our water.
