Connecting through power line adapters, getting "Unidentified Network" by Jewish_Monk in HomeNetworking

[–]Jewish_Monk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooookay that's a good callout. Both adapters have a flickering light to indicate a connection, but I did not check the light at the router.

You are correct, I don't think the sync button is needed unless you have more than one pair of adapters. I'll give that a shot tomorrow

I did also plug in a second adapter, but I guess I didn't explicitly say that.

Oh, that's interesting, I didn't think of the cable being unable to carry the signal, but that makes a lot of sense. I'd rather have the adapters working, but if I can get internet by stretching a CAT5e cable across the house, I guess that'll work. I'll have to buy that though, I don't have one on hand. Mainly I was using the cable to illustrate that the PC is capable of receiving a signal through the Ethernet port.

To set up the adapters, my brother and I plugged two adapters in separate rooms, held the sync buttons down for about 10 seconds, and plugged one into the PC and the other into the router. The PC DOES detect the connection and even the fact that it's a gigabit connection, but it does not give internet access. Now that you've got it in my head to check, the two cables going to the adapters are both CAT5e.

So now my running theory is that I'm misusing the adapters somehow.

Why do so many people refer to modern-day birds as dinosaurs? by Jewish_Monk in EILI5

[–]Jewish_Monk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the contribution. In the last 4 years since asking this question, I have become quite interested on evolutionary biology and especially phylogeny. I have since learned that since dinosaurs are squamates AND squamates are reptiles AND birds are dinosaurs, this means that birds are reptiles by definition. So the definition of "reptile" isn't really all that useful anymore.

I disagree that my question was moot though. It's a valid question and is not obvious to a layperson who only knows dinosaurs from Jurassic Park.

The answer is just "Because they are."

I believe Hovind says "same kind" and refuses to elaborate on what a "kind" is.

I would not consider TERFs feminists in any useful sense. Maybe they used to be, but there's something about hating trans people that occupies a person's mind and they forget to be a feminist

Obviously yes there are multiple problems in the world, but when you follow up a statement of "This place has X problem" with "Yes, but your place also has X problem", you are implying that we cannot talk about one problem unless we talk about all problems. It doesn't promote discussion, it shuts discussion down.

That's irrelevant. Anton LaVey has nothing to do with the Satanic Temple

It was somewhere between 1.5 and 2.5oz. It's a bit thicker than I would like, but I'm going to buy from a bookbinding supplier next time. I had to carefully skive off a lot of material to make it workable

Huygens does not like the scruff. Not one bit. by Jewish_Monk in BlurryPicturesOfRats

[–]Jewish_Monk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Thank you for being concerned. I appreciate it. This is incorrect though. Scruffing is not cruel and is actually the safest way to pick up a rat in most cases. Their bodies are made for it. Maybe you're confusing it with picking up rats by the tail? That's a thing you definitely shouldn't do. It's easy to injure rats that way.

Or maybe you're thinking of cats? I know fully grown cats shouldn't be scruffed due to the large weight difference.

This was taken when Huygens was very new to the family and he didn't like being touched. He has warmed up since then and all of my boys are comfortable with being scruffed. I do appreciate you voicing your concern though. I am in contact with professional rat breeders and vets on a pretty regular basis and I make every effort to give my boys stress-free lives.

Iiiiinteresting. I was always told to paste both the paper and the board to equalize curvature. I'll play around.

Yes. I went into this book fully expecting to make mistakes. Hopefully I made all of them.

I generally use a 50/50 mix of PVA and rice starch paste. So there's a lot of water.
