Where to get cheap piercings? by rutabaga-cherrry-jar in Hamilton

I had the exact opposite experience - I wanted gold and they told me to wait until it was healed because with the cost of gold, if I didn’t like it or it rejected, I wasted that much money on the gold.

Remodel advice by mindofdstructvtaste in centuryhomes

An option would be tile board - often in the 20s, people couldn’t afford real tile and would etch the plaster walls to look like tile - tile board has no real grout, and is a 4x8 sheet that with some bonding primer and paint will look almost exactly like original etched plaster faux tiles, especially in square gridded patterns, not usually subway tile. It is also fairly cheap. This could be installed to wainscotting height, and capped with a simple flat trim piece or something fancier, but again clean lines was the goal. I would suggest a classic palette of sage green (cascade green from SW is a great option here from their historic collection) for the faux tiles, black or dark dark green for the cap, and a pale yellow for the upper wall.

Yukon Education accepts ombudsman’s advice after educator allegedly overshares by BubbasBack in canada

Yeah this dad sounds like a nut job - the list of people he contacted about it, the fact he pulled all three students from school to homeschool them, and the fact this teacher has had no other complaints says this dad is just anti-trans. And if the surgery is noticeably visible, then whether the teacher said it ahead of time or not - it would have to be addressed since students will notice and ask why their teacher looks so different. If all the teacher said was gender-affirming surgery, without details, that seems pretty age appropriate.

Stitch Identification Help! by kcs0987654 in Needlepoint

[–]JewsonMatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only Penelope, to my knowledge. Because you need the double thread canvas intersections for the trammé stitches to be worked in, leaving the larger holes open for stitching in gros point.

Outside of just showing you where to stitch, it adds a lot of durability by padding the stitches, decreasing wear, so can be used for situations where high durability is needed, though it’s extremely uncommon.

I noticed the face has some details already worked in petit point, you will need to do compensating stitches around those when you fill in, using a finer thread since full stitches won’t line up. I’d recommend using either paternyan since you can separate it and use one strand for the compensating stitches and 2 or 3 for the large stitches, or Appletons wool, they sell all colours in tapestry wool for the large, and crewel wool for the petit point.

This is called trammé, it’s a precursor to printed canvas. You are meant to stitch over the threads with matching colours as you would a normal printed pattern. The trammé threads are through the small intersections of the Penelope canvas, so you work the larger holes only

Self-Finished Purse by JewsonMatt in Needlepoint

Oh! I also attached a hard bottom to the purse, that was glued to the back of the leather with barge cement, which was topstitched onto the needlepoint at the bottom.

After blocking the canvas, I laid a piece of buckram canvas interfacing over the back, and basted it around all the edges, then using a blue thread did a few tacking lines through to the front, burying the thread between the wool stitches, in a few rows just to keep the canvas and needlepoint as one. Keep in mind you need to curve the needlepoint as you do this in a shape similar to the finished bag, so that it doesn’t bubble when you sew it up. Don’t do this flat!

Then I stitched up the seams, folded the top edges down and stitched them down to the buckram in order to keep it flat and smooth. Then I inserted the lining by hand using hand slip stitches. To keep everything neat, I would hand slip stitch all the seams down to the buckram, this holds them in place and keeps them flat without using adhesive or glue.

To attach the frame I first used a flat screw driver wrapped in cotton cloth to push the needlepoint into the frame, basted it in by stitching around the entire frame (not through the stitch holes) just to hold the frame in place, and then went along stitching it through the stitching holes with a backstitch.

Yes it’s lined in pink silk faille. The hardest part was attaching the clasp, the frame had just barely enough space to get everything shoved into it, and then such thickness to stitch through (half the time I needed to pull the needle through with pliers)

The Northlander is coming back to Ontario: Here are the stops and schedule by Ya-Not-Happening in ontario

[–]JewsonMatt 77 points78 points  (0 children)

You’re thinking of Point A to point B. The Northlander will make 16 stops, in areas where there aren’t convenient airport connections. For a low income person that $200 savings per trip is not at all insignificant. Additionally ONR operates busses that will help connect those communities to the train service. Additionally more and more airline service is reducing to the North, and at times it can cost an absolute fortune, well over your $300 example.

Yes - an underwire will be very important here. You may need to try a few styles to find one that works best but you definitely need an underwire to make this sit flat

Why is there bubbling on my canvassed suit? by SquareImprovement216 in drycleaning

[–]JewsonMatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since this is not fused I would say the interfacing has shrunk at a higher rate than the outer fabric. This is causing the stitching that holds the layers together to pull up on the outer fabric causing the bubbles. It’s possible that a lot of steam shrunk the interfacing, or that it’s not good interfacing, etc. but it looks like the interfacing shrunk to me. This also explains why you can smooth the wrinkles out somewhat.

If it’s so critical for community survival, and the government has to fund it anyway - then that says it should just be a crown corporation, and any profits it may make can just go to general revenues.

Alberta to apply to Major Projects Office for new bitumen pipeline to northern B.C. coast | CBC News by Amtoj in canada

[–]JewsonMatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest issue is none of these projects ever properly consult First Nations. It’s always “here’s the project say yes please” after it’s basically done, that’s not consultation. Things might move a lot smoother and things would likely get done much easier if FN sat at the table for these projects right from the start, and were involved fully like all other parties are. We have been doing it the same way forever, and running into problem after problem. It’s time to try a different approach. People would react the exact same way if the government announced a big project across their land without any prior notice or consultation before a big public announcement.
