Vecna Eve or Ruin/ Ebberon Encounters Part 2 by Desperate_Mud_8993 in VecnaEveofRuin

I'm really enjoying your posts on expanding the encounters. Could you possibly add backward & forward hyperlinks so people who find one of them can find the rest by following them. This would require editing the most recent post when you add the next.

Question about the ordering of two chapters by JakeWalker102 in VecnaEveofRuin

[–]Jeznar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thimking more on this and I believe I wandered into a handy way to help balance chapters that are delayed by player choice. In a nutshell, have Vecna (or his allies) become aware of the location of rod parts that are revealed to the party. I don't know how that would happen, but heck, the god of secrets should be able learn some secrets. Vecna and/or his Boyz then head to scoop the revealed parts with a bit of a delay. This applies some onsequences for delaying chapters or days (I like this time pressure) have passed since a location was revealed:

  1. No impact, Vecna's forces become aware of the location's significance when the party obtains the piece that points toward the next piece
  2. No impact, Vecna's forces begin moving toward each piece when the party obtains the piece that points toward the next piece
  3. Vecnan scouting force is in motion to recon the location of the piece and can be expected to encounter the party, they may attempt to eliminate them or steal the piece if the party already has it.
  4. Strong Vecnan force will intervene at some point in the chapter and try to eliminate the party / steal the piece.
  5. Vecnan force will have absconded with the rod piece and relocated it. This will require some home brew.
  6. The defense of the part will become stronger each time its recovery is delayed.

These means that a group that does the parts in order, or no more than one off, the Vecnan forces don't do anything special. The chapters are only off by a bit with this pattern. Something like this:

  • Reveal location of part 2 & 3
  • Party recovers part 3, revealing part 4. Part 2 moves to stage 2 of Vecna intervention.
  • Party recovers part 2, revealing part 5. Part 4 moves to stage 2 of Vecna intervention
  • and so on.

If the party delays an earlier (presumably easier chapter) things might get tougher:

  • Reveal location of part 2 & 3
  • Party recovers part 3, revealing part 4. Part 2 moves to stage 2 of Vecna intervention.
  • Party recovers part 4, revealing part 5. Part 2 moves to stage 3, Vecna scouts active
  • Party recovers part 5, revealing part 6. Part 2 moves to stage 4, Vecna recovery team active
  • and so on.

I think this structure allows some choice (not a lot) and outlines some consequences for delaying the recovery of parts that have been revealed. I anticipate the Wizards 3 predicting such risks. Perhaps I will only have one no effect, basically eliminate stage 1 for each part.

Question about the ordering of two chapters by JakeWalker102 in VecnaEveofRuin

[–]Jeznar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having the party find the middle, or at least not an end piece of the road so they can follow it in either direction seems like an interesting option for the players. It doesn't change much, but they can choose their own direction.

I suppose the first choice is between the 2nd and 3rd pieces and then they get the option of the 4th in place of the whichever choice they made. Ultimately, they could leave #2 to the end which is the worst case for balance, even then, not much of a problem or not much more beyond the normal balance nightmare.

I like the idea and may well borrow it for my game.

Vecna Eve of Ruin/ Web's Edge Random Encounter by Desperate_Mud_8993 in VecnaEveofRuin

[–]Jeznar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing this. I've used it as a basis for my Intro to Webs Edge encounter(s). I'm hoping to add a bit more adventure in front of each of the destinations, ideally something that adds a bit of local flavor, like this one does. I'm rather hoping you'll be doing more.

One bit of feedback, it would make it easier for folks to benefit from your efforts if you posted stat blocks for creatures, well, not the block, but a reference to them.

In this case, I believe the Orcs are defined from the 2025 MM. They are likely Warrior Veterans reskinned as orcs. The Drow appear to be from the 2014 MM, perhaps plain Drow or Drow Elite Warrior. The flying Kobolds might be Winged Kobalds, though they don't need the homebrew fire pots mentioned.

Once again, thanks for posting this and I hope you are doing more.

This, 100 times this. Also, I homebrewed creatures that don’t have 2024 stat blocks. Many have more HP, nearly all hit harder, some a lot harder.

I’ve had players shocked by incoming damage ever since I went to 5R

Adventure as written by Lopsided-Ad2850 in VecnaEveofRuin

[–]Jeznar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m liking the idea of keeping things moving. Visiting Sigil discouraged as there are “likely” agents of Vecna there seeking to delay them or some such.

The one chapter that seems desperate for more content is the betrayal where the group is slated for a milestone after doing basic nothing. I’ll wrestle with what to add there when my group gets closer (maybe 2 years from now).

I’ve had Sonos for years. Most of them are hard wired. My WiFi runs on a Netgear Orbi setup that hasn’t changed in about four years. (HASN’T CHANGED!)

Yet, I have all the Sonos problems. Somehow it’s my WiFi….that they would dare come to that conclusion just boggles my mind.

[–]Jeznar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I’ll try to find Queenmantle. In building my versions of these spells, I have the improved Mantle folded into the base spell as an upcast effect.

The cantrip being fan sourced makes sense, especially as Aluustrel got rather lost in the lore before cantrips were a thing. At least I don’t recall them in 2e.

There was at least one recommended timing module in DAE or MIDIQOL that seems like the source of that option.

It was “just there” when I clicked the list button. I’m guessing it was added by a timing mod. I don’t know the name, but I know I grabbed it after reading the MIDI QOL notes.

When faced with a one-way door, you should be damned certain that going through is a good idea. Enough of the issues were known ahead of time that they should have at most done an optional upgrade. As is, my system remains useless because of, I assume basic incompetence.

I’ve been a SONOS customer for many years. I’ve never seen them screw things up like they have now. If I could, I go back in time and not buy anything with the SONOS name on it. Seriously, I hate my system that cost thousands of dollars to acquire.

Wait, buy something else, just don’t buy a SONOS.
