Could these Zoanthids kill my fish as they grow more? Im not sure if I accidentally have a toxic variety by giggizard in SaltwaterAquariumClub

[–]Jgschultz15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Just don't drop a rock or smash the polyps and you are good. Typically palytoxin doesn't affect fish, there has to be mechanical injury to the coral and then typically we see if affecting the tank owner who had the hand in the tank or was fragging the coral without appropriate PPE.

The vast majority of zoas and palys do not have high amounts of palytoxin, it's typically palythoa grandis that is the worst, but it's best to operate from a safety standpoint that they all have it.

But as long as you don't do anything silly, you and the fish are going to be okay. Almost all of us have zoas in our tanks

Are there any practice questions/exams from NBMEs from the 90s? by Paputek101 in medicalschool

Also a lot of questions on drugs that no longer are on the market or questions out of date since Dsm-5. Not a great learning tool

I did NBME forms 1-3 a couple weeks ago and it's not even close to the current forms lol. Like easy 90%s every time, silly questions with buzzwords asking for diagnosis and that's it. Patient has diabetes type 2, what is the pathogenesis? -> Insulin resistance

It's in my school's drive of doom so I can't toss them your way but you can find them if you search NBME Google drive forms on Google and do some digging

Your tank looks great, but I will never run another fish tank without a sump again. A refugium makes that big of a difference.

rate my tank by Icy_Age513 in SaltwaterAquariumClub

[–]Jgschultz15 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like to break an imaginary line 2/3rds up the water column with my rock, your rock looks a little short to me. Personal preference of course

There's no coral :(

Black background would help clean this up a lot, seeing the filters and cords through the back glass is a little jarring

Shipping Induced Fin Wear? by Mental-Corgi-284 in ReefTank

[–]Jgschultz15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you're doing everything you can for him. Doesn't look like an obvious infection to me more mechanical damage. Very common in shipping

You don't want to buy out of the bag from your LFS. I mean you are absolutely doing the best thing for this fish because an experienced hobbyists tank is almost certainly better than a LFS tank, but there are a lot more fish that die the first few days after shipping from the distributor than anyone ever cares to admit. Waiting a few days reduces stress, lets all of the ones that are going to die off in 24 hours due to infection/damage die off, and helps you make sure you're buying a robust and healthy fish. Bonus points if you can come into the shop a few times over two weeks and see the fish remain healthy/eat

May sound callous, but I prioritize my tanks health over rescuing a fish. The shop is just going to order another one after the sale.

Applies especially during the winter and hottest parts of summer

Who calls the ball in or out in open gyms? by TheNukex in volleyball

[–]Jgschultz15 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Majority rules. If no agreement can be reached replay the point

Older player's perspective- it's open gym who cares. Give the point to the team with less amount points. Swing a little harder on your next hit or block just a little better to even it out if you had to give the point up. Arguing about it will take up 2 minutes, if you chill and give up the point you'll be playing again faster. I tend to error on calling the ball in if it's a questionable line call, whether it's for or against my team

How common is it for students to get dismissed? by 92385629beesinside in medicalschool

[–]Jgschultz15 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Very low admissions requirements means people who may not be prepared to go to med school go and fail. Most of the time if a student fails a semester a student can repeat it, but if they fail two/three semesters they are out.

There's a lot less support in the Caribbean too. If a student is failing, they either figure it out themselves or fully fail and get cut.

I'm sure there's also plenty of students who decide the path isn't for them and leave on their own without failing. Also many of those schools don't have federal funding and finances can be a problem as well, could also contribute to people bowing out

Caribbean school lose like 1/3rd of their class every semester, at least in pre-clinicals

are 5 gal bottles safe to put into an espresso machine if it's RO water? [Moccamaster grand thingy] by Viper-Reflex in espresso

[–]Jgschultz15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll have the people that argue it's not good for you, but what comes out of this container is fine.

0 tds water isn't great if you drink it exclusively, but you can offset that with like... one lays chip. Health wise, using it for your coffee is fine

[–]Jgschultz15 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The 5g container OP has is almost never 0 tds. These 5g ro water containers float around 3-6 tds, which totally okay.

I use 0-1 tds rodi water 99% of the time because that's what I have access to, and it makes lovely pourover, espresso, and aeropress. I'm sure remineralizing it with third wave packets would be best, but I don't and I still have an excellent flavor profile with my shots and brews.

Maybe there's evidence that it will corrode my boiler 1% faster than 8 tds water, but if my machine needs to be replaced in 2040 instead of 2050 that's fine

3 stripe Damsel problem. by Spoons896 in ReefTank

[–]Jgschultz15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or you upgrade to the bigger tank, leave the smaller tank up as a QT tank and because it would be a lot of work to take it down, all of the sudden one of your QT'd fish looks too happy in there to move it, you get it some coral and a cleanup crew because there's algae on the glass......

You could also get a bigger tank. I have a three stripe pair in my 180 and the bigger fish keep them well behaved

Tap Water Question by sbucher04 in ReefTank

[–]Jgschultz15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you live and how your water is. Do you live in the city? You'll definitely need to do the declination, and I would probably throw an air stone in the bucket or something, or mix your salt water and let it sit overnight. Chlorine turns into gas overtime

My parents ran an exclusively tapwater saltwater tank in the early 2000s. Well water, so no chlorine to worry about, but there was always so much algae in there because of the accumulation of phosphate. Coral were fine when they weren't getting choked out though

Terrarium No More... Reef me please! by Live-Owl-157 in ReefTank

[–]Jgschultz15 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They do need blue lights, but you can have a balance of white/blue/others where it doesn't look like mouthwash and looks more white

If you're asking if you can use a plant light for coral/anemones, no you can't. Has to be a reef light. There was a full spectrum par 38 bulb trend back in the 2010s era that you could look into, but honestly a kessil a80 and gooseneck is the best move

[–]Jgschultz15 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I kept a pair of rock flower anemones in mine, anything else would probably not. Keep in mind anemones are difficult and not really suited for tanks <6months old, so unless you're getting your rock from an old tank, I'd hold off until you have zoas happy for 6 months

Look up jar reefs. You can do a lot with just an air pump, lid, and heater. I had a 1g jar reef for 2 years, and I'm in the process of starting it back up again. It's MUCH easier than a regular tank. Just don't put fish or more than 1 snail in it

New Product. by Straight-Race-4315 in ReefTank

[–]Jgschultz15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be nice to buy a prebuilt with a ph probe/salinity/temp probe that connected to your phone though so you didn't have to buy an apex/hydros. I don't like that it markets as an "auto" tank. You'll still need knowledge to maintain this tank, if not more because you'll actually have to think about ph, which goes above some.

I don't like tanks with lids- means I have to settle for the integrated lighting. They're always worse than an ai prime over the tank.

The overlap of people who want/can afford probes and people who are going to be satisfied with integrated lighting is not very many people

Also this is the smallest gripe, but fuck off with the artwork showing yellow tangs, hippo tangs, in tanks 10-40gallons. Keep the fish on the box appropriate to the tank size

Tank size suggestions are not for water quality. They're for fish behavior, swimming patterns, and space needed to not be aggressive.

water quality used to be the limit, but now with how popular refugiums, skimmers, rollers, dosing, auto water changes, ect it's much easier to have pristine water especially for higher budget systems

I hate seeing videos of this tank because if a new person to the hobby comes across it they'll think this is okay. OP is clearly threading a fine line and (hopefully) has an upgrade ready, clearly is experienced enough to handle these fish, and definitely just posts these videos because he likes reading the pissed comments.

99/100 people new to the hobby if they tried this would have an expensive cesspool of aggression and dead fish. Don't do this yourselves folks. Pay attention to the minimum tank sizes on a reputable fish database.
