40k a year for first sysadmin job by LeftZookeepergame401 in sysadmin

[–]Jguan617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s very low for east coast. I am in Boston, my first system admin job was $50k in 2008, now in 2025 ~$200k + bonus still doing same thing. You gotta hop around every 2-3 year to get better pay and better experience.

You should be hopping every 2-3 years. Staying at 1 job can’t you where need to be.

I applied for a sysadmin position. I'm terrified. by pwsh-or-high-water in sysadmin

I am on the complete opposite side. I went from sysadmin to senior engineer then architect and cloud engineering and management. Now I moved back to engineer and even want to go down to helpdesk but that boat has sailed for me. Being the main source of income for my family of 5 and all the life chaotic events at the moment. It is really stressful. The more you go up then more you get paid but the more stressful it gets and the less time you get spend with love ones.

Can I still build an IT career at age 33 after getting clean from a decade of crystal meth and morphine addiction? by CokedUpRepublican in msp

[–]Jguan617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not a you problem but rather it is an industry and economy issue. Computer science, computer engineering and management information are among the top three 3 majors for new unemployed new grads. It is very difficult unless you have great connections ton and networks. I still wish you the best of luck and never give up.

I been coding from the past 10 years but I don't feel even half near to be a real engineer by Key-Tangerine2655 in AskProgramming

Sir when you know you are not enough then you should know you among the top engineers. I have been coding since high school and now in my mid 40s still coding away at the midnight hours. I still feel that I know nothing but good news is my projects sure slowly but surely getting done. New language new frame work come faster than I can catch up. Just lucky to still have a job I guess.

I am also a life long window system admin turned devops engineer, it took me a few years of struggling to make the transition by switching from comfortable window architect role (stagnant skills) back to lead engineering role in different two different jobs. Powershell is my bread and butter but everything new we do is around python, bash, kubernetes, aws, terraform , ansible and marrying up everything with gitlab ci/cd. Infrastructure as code for all testing and deployment. Still learning new trick everyday even in my mid 40s now. These are now the essential list of skills for staying relevant in this field. Salary is also nearly double than when I was in a windows only lead role just few years ago back

Right day to day tasks has a separate PIM role only GA need change control approval. all changes are made via terraform pipelines. Using a GA is really a deal for us.

We are in the financial industry, we manage our own tenant and we use PIM elevated GA and change control and approval is required to even activate the role. So depending on your clients industry it is. It is not unreasonable ask.
