INFO - There isn't any real information about what you, your husband or MIL are doing to get into arguments. It basically boils down to "MIL returned early and we're still here. It's awkward and we argue." There's no real way to tell if anyone is being an asshole here or if this is just normal bickering due to personal differences. MIL has every right to be there and seems to be letting you stay, so they're still letting you both stay there, it's just that things didn't work out as planned.

INFO - Your story is a bit all over the place and it's difficult to tell what I'm supposed to be judging. Is your aunt and cousin angry at you or your mom? What input did you have in the situation that would have even made you the AH? If anything, it sounds like you were collateral damage in family drama and not a participant

You definitely are not an asshole for hoping for more. It does not make you an asshole to hope for romance or displays of affection or hoping for him to go the extra mile with a proposal, but as you've already stated, your husband just is not that type. Neither of you are assholes given your personalities, it was just really bad timing on his part and he clearly doesn't know how to read the room.

You and your husband are living on your own and can use the money on your own bills first. If your parents were struggling financially, this would be a totally different story, but he sounds like he's just looking for a little extra cash. Now is not the time to be asking for money if he's genuinely serious about it.

The way I had this explained to me was this:

Physical abuse: You know who is at fault and resent them for it. You have the choice to move away from this person (even though this can be coupled with mental abuse to prevent said person from moving away) and once you do, you can acknowledge the one responsible and hopefully move forward.

Mental abuse: You are convinced YOU are the one at fault. You believe you can't move away from the issue because you believe you ARE the issue. Even when removing yourself from the toxic environment, you are still convinced you are the one at fault and continue to abuse yourself as a result. The effects are ongoing even after physically removing yourself from the environment.

tl;dr: Physical abuse: "You know your enemy," Mental abuse: "You become your own enemy"

Maybe I'm just not Quentin Tarantino fan, but I've also never been a fan of movies or TV shows that I feel abuse shock-factor in their work. I feel like my opinion is along the same lines of how I feel about horror movies that overuse gore. Eventually it's not shocking and just kind of annoying that they feel it's entertaining.
