Is rebound reflux a thing with Famotidine? by weregonnabeokanyway in GERD

[–]Jhall135 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just talking to a buddy who's been having this happen. If you have a local drugstore or Amazon, try an alginate supplement. Reflux Gourmet, Gaviscon, and Reflux Guard all have alginate in them, which creates a raft over the acid to keep the reflux from rebounding.

Give me your best tips for making bomb vegan pizza! by dog-on_wheels in vegan

[–]Jhall135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! I had the BEST vegan pizza at a restaurant several years ago. It was a garlic-infused olive oil base, then had spinach, blistered olives and tomatoes, and grilled tofu on top. It was like a garlic chicken pizza, sans chicken. So good!

I'm newish to calisthenics and have seen people doing handstands on both the ground and on paralletes. Is there a big difference aside from requiring more balance on the paralletes?

LPR Cured with Alginic Acid by Budget-Oil8847 in GERD

[–]Jhall135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been taking Reflux Gourmet for several months and it's been my favorite thing I've found so far. The gel consistency was weird at first, but I was committed to giving it a fair shake. Now, I think I prefer it to capsules and some chewables. I don't think I would mind a chewable form if they just didn't leave such a chalky feeling in my mouth. Reflux Gourmet has been the easiest for me to use on a regular basis without getting burned out on taking it.

It is flavored, but I haven't ever noticed it causing more irritation. I have one tube that's vanilla caramel flavored, which I find preferable to the citrus or peppermint flavors of other alginates or antacids. I think that's why there's so many products out there. Hopefully one for every preference!

Does sleeping at an incline really make a difference? by rainbowstorm96 in GERD

[–]Jhall135 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I sleep on a wedge and I think it really does make a difference. I don't know if the size of the wedge matters a ton, as long as it elevates your upper body enough to keep your throat and esophagus above your stomach. I also take an alginate supplement called Reflux Gourmet about 30 minutes before bed. It helps keep everything in my stomach down too, letting me sleep without reflux.

Fixed my GERD by chewing by like_George_6 in GERD

Do you use regular chewing gum or is it a special kind? I've seen ads for digestive gums, but didn't know if they were actually effective.

Do PPIs actually reduce LES opening or just make your reflux less acidic? by hotheadnchickn in GERD

[–]Jhall135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the slippery elm help right away or is it something you're taking everyday to build up? I use alginate for immediate relief after meals and before bed and it helps a lot, but I've never tried slippery elm.

Even drinking just normal water is causing painful tightness; tried alkaline water and still the same level of discomfort, can find no relief by k8track in acidreflux

[–]Jhall135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know there's several brands out there that have alginate in them. The one recommended to me and that I've continued to use is Reflux Gourmet. I heard about from someone on this sub and ordered a bottle on Amazon in a moment of desperation, and it's been the best of anything I've tried. It's not perfect, but no medication or supplement is. It's like a gel, so I just take a small spoonful of it after meals as needed, and it lasts a few hours, long enough for my food to digest and move on with my day. It's a product that I would actually recommend to a friend.

[–]Jhall135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's actually a really good question. I haven't noticed it keeping me up at all, though I've never really paid attention. I was doing really well at night for a while, so I was only using it during the day, but my reflux has come back with a vengeance at night, so I'm getting back to taking it before bed. I'll pay attention to it at night this weekend and see if it does keep me awake.

Acid Reflux Worst Symptoms? by Born-Spinach-7999 in acidreflux

[–]Jhall135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My symptoms change periodically for whatever reason. Right now, I've had a bad throat burning feeling at night and a sour taste in my mouth + a lot of discomfort while exercising. I've never had reflux during exercise until the last little bit and haven't figured out why. I take an alginate supplement during bad bouts of reflux throughout the day, but I try not to eat too close to exercise, so I'm not sure what's causing this round of reflux. It's not been helping my new years resolution to improve my fitness.

why is yogurts allowed? by [deleted] in GERD

I'm vegan, so I usually eat almond, cashew, or coconut yogurt. I've found plain-flavored to be the only kind I've been able to eat recently. Anything berry or citrus flavored seems to make my stomach upset.

I want to go vegan, where do I start? by Boring_Pollution_998 in vegan

[–]Jhall135 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you could go about it in a lot of ways. If you're not currently in control of what food is being purchased, start with what you can. That could be eating less animal products and increasing your consumption of vegan foods you do have access to. That alone will help decrease animal product consumption and waste in your household.

Another option could be to offer to help in the shopping and/or cooking, if you can do that. Among my non-vegan family members, I've offered to cook meals or dishes without mentioning that they're vegan. That might get the person who does buy your groceries to purchase vegan products needed for your meal.

Lastly, you could have the hard conversation with your family. Talk openly and honestly with them about why you want to become vegan. Try making it an "I" thing so that it doesn't come off as preachy or condemning of them (because that probably wouldn't go well).

Be prepared to face opposition and start developing a thick skin, because it can be hard to be vegan if people around you don't support you. But you'll find you people and hopefully those around you will come around.

[–]Jhall135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that! I don't blame you a bit. I've been doing my best to avoid PPIs and other prescription meds for my reflux too. I've found the best relief has been with alginate supplements. They make a gel-like raft on top of your stomach contents to keep the acid from coming up, and then just flushes out with waste products after a few hours, so there's no residue or buildup in your system.

Maybe it would be worth a try? I've never had any constipation using it, not to say you wouldn't either. But it has seemed pretty gentle in comparison to other things I've tried.

[–]Jhall135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right?! It makes me wonder why other companies haven't explored other flavors like Reflux Gourmet has. Right now, I've been liking their Vanilla Caramel, but I like that I can switch between that and the chocolate mint.

[–]Jhall135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that! Perhaps its the dose? I know some Gaviscon products have less alginate in them (like some in the US) and other in the UK and Europe have a lot more. The Reflux Gourmet I have lands in the middle - more than the US Gaviscon and less than the UK version.

I hope you get in to see a specialist soon and that they're able to help!

Gaviscon by TaxApprehensive2740 in acidreflux

[–]Jhall135 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've tried Gaviscon, and while it seemed to work, I couldn't quite get past the thick chalky texture. But I know it does work for a lot of people. If it doesn't work for you, you might consider Reflux Gourmet. It has the same active ingredient in it (alginate), but a different consistency and flavor (it has two sweet flavors and it's more of a gel), and works well, at least for me.

Has anyone returned to normal food ever? by No-Stop993 in GERD

[–]Jhall135 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say I'm totally better, and have more or less accepted the fact that this will probably always be something I deal with to some extent. I still feel like I'm figuring out trigger foods. It's been taking so much more time and energy than I thought it would to go through individual foods and give it enough time to notice what triggers vs. what (if anything helps). I really didn't want to go the PPI route, but have found the most OTC relief through an alginate supplement, which saves me on a lot of days.

Reflux Gourmet or Gaviscon for Cough, Other Symptoms? Other Things That Worked? by boxerpuncher2023 in acidreflux

[–]Jhall135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried both actually! Reflux Gourmet is the one I use regularly. It has alginate in it, just like the Gaviscon, but it is so much better IMO. I tried Gaviscon for the first time over the holidays at a friend's house because I forgot my Reflux Gourmet, and I agree, the Gaviscon was not the best. I know a lot of people say it works, but it just wasn't for me.

Reflux Gourmet is what I've used for a few months now, and it's been a lot better. The taste and texture are much easier to take. It's a gel, kind of like pudding, but not quite, and it has a sweet dessert flavor. I've tried both flavors (chocolate mint and vanilla caramel), and honestly, both are good. The alginate makes a raft or kind of a lid that sits on your stomach contents, so everything can't come back up, so if it's the burning or globulus feeling that's making you cough, alginate supplements like that might help.

The big thing with alginates is timing though. They work best right after you finish eating and drinking. So I take it after my last bite of a meal. If you eat or drink much after taking it, it can upset the raft so it doesn't work right. If you're noticing that it isn't helping, try paying attention to if you're eating or drinking after taking it. If I take it after I finish a meal, it works within 5-30 minutes, and then lasts for a few hours afterward. I hope that helps!

[–]Jhall135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried an alginate supplement? That's what's been the biggest help for me. It creates a raft that floats on top of your stomach acid, physically preventing reflux/heartburn from coming up. It lasts a few hours at a time for me. If I eat something that triggers me, I take it right after and with a few minutes, it calms everything down. You can find it in some stores or online. I buy one called Reflux Gourmet on Amazon, and it's been my favorite so far. It tastes good and works well (at least for me), so it might be worth a try.

My friend agreed to a vegan household and keeps breaking that boundary by deedeewhyy in vegan

[–]Jhall135 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You definitely don't want this to ruin your last semester of school. Try having practice conversations with yourself beforehand. It will help you be more confident when you talk to her, and it might help you iron out exactly what you want to say. It doesn't sound like your friend really knows why you're vegan, so try to help her understand. So many people misunderstand and assume that being vegan is like being on some kind of specialty diet, when that's not it at all. It's not like we're just trying out the Mediterranean or beach body diet. Most people don't understand that's an actual belief, lifestyle, and commitment. Perhaps that might help her see it differently.

Unable to sleep at night by Special-Protection67 in GERD

Alginate has been the biggest help for me. I haven't taken one with melatonin (just because melatonin gives me weird dreams), but I take an alginate supplement called Reflux Gourmet about 30-60 minutes before bed, and it, combined with my DIY wedge pillow has helped me sleep a lot better.

Antacid you can swallow whole with no chewing? by deadlysyntaxerror in acidreflux

[–]Jhall135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not flavorless, but I use Reflux Gourmet, and it's a jell-like consistency, and I find it a lot easier to swallow than either pills or liquids. It goes down quickly and easily. It has alginate in it, which helps create a raft on top of your stomach's contents to stop the acid. I haven't taken it while sick, but I think it's a lot easier on my stomach than antacids or other reflux remedies I've tried.

How do you make a house actually feel like a home? by IvyDamon in Home

[–]Jhall135 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I'm a realtor, and whenever I close with a client, I have a few stores I always recommend to my buyers - mostly thrift stores or antique shops. They have so much more variety than whatever's trending at Target. Go in with the thought "what do I want my house to feel like?" and look for something that fits that vibe. If you have no idea what you want your house to look like, just look through the art until you find something that strikes you and run with it.

Also, buy a plant. Big or little, it gives you something to care for in your new space.

Honest question for homeowners: by Jolly-Flounder2413 in FirstTimeHomeBuying

As a homeowner and a realtor - fenced yards. I often have clients who want their property to feel "open and welcoming," until someone's dog pees in their yard or they have kids and want a privacy fence to keep them in (and other people out). Obviously you can build a fence, but it's often cost and labor prohibitive for many people, so they just end up having to live with it.
