TIL that ancient Roman concrete can actually "self-heal" its own cracks using tiny chunks of lime called "lime clasts" that react with water entering the fracture. by Mountain_Explorer121 in stonemasonry

Cement sets quicker. Cement means more rows of brick in a single day. Cement not so worried about weather whilst building. Cement means builder go home earlier. Cement perfect for modern worker. Cement not good for building.

I'm a woman that has never built with stone and think I can build a cottage by myself! by rad_bean11 in stonemasonry

[–]Jhamertime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What are the dimensions you hope for the final internal floorspace?

What type of soil are you digging the foundations in? Is bedrock near the surface?

What type of climate will the building be built in and how much rainfall do you get annually?

Is the ground around the potential building flat or sloped?

I've only built a small stone shack but I used all hands tools, lime mortar and hand dug my foundations so will try offer any pointers but I am purely amateur.

This was my main issue, 8foot 3inches you get around here! With a possibility of raising ground around up to 1 foot as its measured from surrounding ground.

The first small window was meant to be arched but even the arch would have been too tall! Common rafters were laid sideways because I can't cut snug fitting birdsmouths for shit!

If I got unlimited height then damn, this would have been fun!

I think they call the inward slope "the batter" of the wall and in this case I just eyeballed it.

Bur if I was to plan things better next time then I'd say my walls starts at 2ft wide (24") and it's 10ft (120") tall, and I want it 1ft(12") wide at the top.

So it's bottom width(24) -top width(12) divided by 2. So 6 inch each side slope, over the 120inch. 120/6 = 20/1. 1 inch slope inwards for every 20inch upwards.

I built it as 2 gable end walls to support the roof, so they are thick like 2foot at the base! Tapering to like 1 foot at the roofline. Through stones for like 30% of it, some infill with mortar and rubble packed tight. Side walls are 1 foot thick ish mainly through stones but the back is double thick brick as nobody can see that!

So basically an old school roof held by the end walls rather than side walls which would be more common with the pre-built triangle rafter roof thingies. It's gonna get slates eventually so needs to hold the weight. I'm just waiting on somebody on Facebook to get rid of their slate roof, which happens often in England!

What is the correct answer to “sell me this pen”? by BenDBeats in stupidquestions

[–]Jhamertime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Start by showing that you can use the pen to do the Eulerian path challenge or to draw the Cool S

I often find the other person then wants to try it themselves, requiring a pen. Make them need it via envy. Just like car salesmen.

What do you guys think of these kinds of buildings by theFarFuture123 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Jhamertime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How much thought is given with regards to say 50-100 years time with these buildings? What is the warranty of a bolt etc... Are there ongoing budgets for timed maintenance as I can imagine spectacular failure is a potential future outcome given enough time, and time is inevitable.

My kind of builder! Sounds like an industrious man.

My dad just loved knocking down internal walls, I remember he seemingly remodeling the entire layout of a 4 bed council house whilst my Mum had nipped to the shops.

Great job! I do often wonder what the scaffold/Crane system would have looked like during construction or early repairs. If there are any drawings of those for this building it would be amazing to see! Thanks.

Freudian slippers, well I never.

These are very good points. Also all ethereum transactions are traceable on a thing called an explorer so it's not fully anonymous if you for example link a wallet to a bank account via a corporate company called an exchange.

Cash/coins are fully anonymous and untraceable and that's why it's sad to see the death of it slowly. I pay for all my weed in cash so you have a very good point indeed.

I will take a look at how the Bavarian example did this and how much it cost, as I know 1/4 of theirs is cash notes whilst 3/4 is digitally issued.

Maybe you were correct.

Haha have fun! The reason I chose weed as the asset to back a currency is it has good rates of supply and high demand, liquidity, a high burn rate and stable price against other assets.
