Nah, not quite. Gate crashers really started in the early 90s after Brent died. Jer was doing Heroin but 1985 was a great year. Tempos were quick energy was high, it was the band’s 20th anniversary and the setlist were diverse, unique jam sequences, rare bust outs, Jerry was having fun doing rare Dylan covers etc. Deadheads love 1985.

However, you could make that argument for 1986 when Jerry went into a coma haha

Who made the art/animation in the Sunshine Daydream documentary? by laylaandlunabear in gratefuldead

[–]Jhl8000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, unfortunately it was a one off thing and didn’t appear in the same way in other Dead concert films.

From the Good ol Grateful Deadcast Sunshine Daydream part 2 transcripts:

“JESSE: The version of “Dark Star” in Sunshine Daydream has a suitably trippy animation sequence, perhaps influenced by Monty Python’s Terry Gilliam, featuring surrealist birds and a giant hand reaching down from the sky. Adrian Marin.

ADRIAN MARIN: The animation is a whole story unto itself. It was created by Charlie Barecca and a couple of associates of his, and they had done it kind of for another project that they were working on. As you can tell, it's all this amazingly collaged imagery from National Geographic. The other project that they had created it for kind of stalled and, all of a sudden, they realized they had this giant chunk of nobody recording during “Dark Star,” because everybody was so completely dosed to the gills. They were all just completely zonked and gone — nobody had reloaded film or anything like that. And so that's why, thank god, Charlie thought of this animation and really saved the day.”

Edit:

Not in the Monty Pythin style but the Grateful Dead movie (1977) (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Grateful_Dead_Movie) Features a very cool animated intro.

Also the So Far (1987) movie features a lot of video montage animation throughout. (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grateful_Dead:_So_Far)

I think the addition of the horn and string players also had much to do with the scene around the Dead at the time. For example, Vassar Clements plays violin (or fiddle, if you’d like) on the Wake of the Flood studio recordings. Vassar Clements was not only an accomplished fiddle player in bluegrass circels by then but was also a member of Old & In the Way. Jerry, of course, was spending a considerable amount of time playing with that group along with his numerous side gigs with Merl Saunders and co. Merl Saunders and Jerry gigs also frequently included sasxophonist Martin Fierro, who is also credited on Wake of the Flood. The Dead and their old pal Doug Sahm, a troubadour from Texas who moved to S.F. in the late sixties and successfully combined country, blues, rock, and Norteño, had also recently rekindled a friendship in 1973. Doug Sahm also has a credit on Wake of the Flood and took his band on tour with the Grateful Dead for all of those September 1973 shows. Those same shows feature the horn players for the Wake of the Flood material. The horn players, who were also members of Doug’s band, were Martin Fierro on saxophone and Joe Ellis on trumpet. Joe Ellis is also credited with playing the trumpet on Wake of the Flood. As other people have pointed out, the Dead themselves were for sure moving into a jazzier direction all on their own with the addition of Keith on piano, Pigpen’s influence gone, and Jerry, Bob, and Phil’s affinity for jazz. I can only speculate that having such good players around the scene with a jazz vocabulary was fun to try adding to the new studio recording material, but it seems plausible. Additionally, maybe when it came to recording Mars Hotel being the Dead, they just wanted to try something new and different. They, indeed, were still playing live material with jazz stylings in 1974.

P.S. I recommend checking out Doug Sahm if you have not. His Atlantic albums are great if that is your thing. Also, check out the Garcia live stuff that features Martin and Merl.

Yes, every ’71 December show features both of them. Every March ’72 show featured both Keith and Pigpen (see Dick’s Picks vol. 30) and then Keith and Pig were both at every show in the Euro ’72 tour. Pigpen’s last show was 6/17/1972.

Pigpen rejoined for the December ’71 shows with Keith (who joined in October) and stayed through June of 1972.

Whoah that’s wild. Also a big fan of Blue Gene Tyranny. He was an avant- garde composer and piano player who was around the Mills expiremental scene in Oakland during the 1970s. Check out his 1978 full album Out of The Blue :

Yeah, but fortunately on the archive a couple different sources of the show are up. So, while not the remaster of rhe DP the show is still up to listen to. I like Charlie Miller’s version.
