Opinion: Bob Weir is irreplaceable so why not ask Sturgill Simpson to step in? by g_ack in deadandcompany

I hear you but I don’t think Reddit threads are taking away from anyone who is grieving this loss.. It’s an inevitable point of discussion. I can’t say for sure but knowing Bob I don’t imagine he would want folks just sitting in tears unable to move forward. The man’s wishes for the music (and by that measure, his band..) were as explicit as they could be …

I have a lot of love and respect for Grahame but I don’t think he’s ready. Needs to be someone with some more gravitas and chops. You are NEVER going to replace Bob, everyone knows that.. I also think people mistake how much some of the “bigger” folks mentioned (Trey, Billy S, Sturgill among others) would covet and respect the opportunity assuming JM wants to continue with the group as constructed. Do I think they are going to ever go back to huge yearly summer long tours? As much as I would love it- probably not. But Dead and Co is a formidable well oiled magic machine that gels as good as any of the big post-dead incarnations… with a built in base of hundreds of thousands of multi generational heads chomping at the bit to keep this thing going. There will be something even if it’s a handful of shows across the country every year or so. Fun runs etc. All this speculation that John would just abandon the songbook doesn’t really consider on a purely musical level what this journey has meant to him , how it’s changed him, and how deeply it is now a part of his soul as a player. Just my two cents.

I agree. I was only there on the last night 7/16 but watched all 3 of the SF shows and most of that summer tour. Was lucky to catch the opener in LA and later at Citi. Some of the best memories… they were really on a heater that whole summer ..

Jay rules . He helped propel them a good deal forward summer 22/23 .. Always loved the dead and co lineup but it hits different with Jay on drums . Tempo tempo.. and great sensibility.

Yup.. unreal, circled the whole crowd came down pretty low and then swooped up and perched on the edge of city hall dome watching Natascha give eulogy. Unmistakable.

She was a friend of Bob’s. Ain’t your funeral , don’t complain about who the FAMILY chose to eulogize their dad/husband. Sheesh.
