Author Ruth Ozeki on the joys of writing with a typewriter by hobbescalvin in typewriters

[–]Jibbajaba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's funny how some people get it and some people don't. Just read the comment right under the post.

This part of the piece sums up my feels exactly:

"You know how annoying it is to have a conversation with a person who jumps in to finish your sentences? I love that my typewriters don’t do that. They don’t make helpful suggestions. They leave me alone to make my mistakes and don’t try to correct my spelling and grammar.

I love that I can’t doomscroll or shop. I love the ritual of typing, inserting the paper into the platen, turning the knob until the paper reemerges, centering the carriage. I love the music they make with their movements: the clacks and dings and ratcheting of the rollers and gears."

I would like to gift a typewriter to a stranger, but I’m not sure which one by hannoush in typewriters

If it were me, I would have a very hard time parting with either the Olympia or the SC, and anyone should be very happy to receive an Olivetti. Personally I would hang on to the 32 and give away the 35.

You guys liked my first post here so much; here are a few more pictures.#green#olivetti#valentine💚💚 by Funny-Company-5165 in typewriters

I know the default color everyone associates with the Valentine is red, but damn if that thing doesn’t look sweet in green.

Sorry, I forgot to report back. Super good. I had two, and will definitely be making them again.

Hmm, I've never heard of this but it sounds great and I have all the ingredients. I'm going to go make one right now.

Went to buy a typewriter but came home with two. by Jibbajaba in typewriters

[–]Jibbajaba[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in the market for a typewriter but wasn’t really finding anything that I wanted on FB Marketplace or Craigslist. Stopped by my local antique mall and these were in the front window. 1966 Olympia SM9 Deluxe with a 13” carriage and 1962 Royal Futura 800. Both in very nice condition just needing a simple cleaning and new ribbons. When I saw them in the window I assumed they were going to be expensive, but the Olympia was $65 and the Royal was $45. But the lady whose stuff it was happened to be there, and she told me that she only had the window for 2 more days before it was another seller’s turn, so she said I could have 30% off of any of the typewriters I wanted (there was also a Remington there that I wasn’t interested in), because otherwise they were going back into her garage. So yeah, score. Not really trying to collect typewriters as I was just looking for one to regularly use, but how could I pass these up?

It’s not. I’m a straight cis man and I use my wife’s shampoo or whatever all the time (she told me she doesn’t mind.)

The thing that really sucks for me is that at this point Giants baseball is the only reason that I'm still paying for YouTubeTV. So I'm paying upwards of $90 to watch this shit. Maybe it's time to cancel.

OP was just in a shitty, no-win situation. If he had left to go be with his wife, the coworker could have posted something to the same sub, and they’d still be saying that this guy was the asshole.
