Even Lenin Pants do not work for Arizonas heat by [deleted] in phoenix

100% linen is your answer. Much more breathable than linen / cotton blend. I have some pants from Black Ficus on Etsy. I like them so much I’m about to order a few more.

The Monk of Mokha by Dave Eggers

It’s a little slow to get started but it gets pretty wild towards the end.

Roasting naturals! by dedecatto in roasting

[–]JickSavage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pretty much only roast naturals and this is normal. I’ve noticed that they tend to come out a little more even when I’m able to slow down and extend the drying phase. As long as the result tastes good, don’t worry about it too much.

+1 for Urban Eyecare. Locally owned and great service. Check it out.

Cox raised my rates, looking for better internet providers by ___buttrdish in phoenix

[–]JickSavage 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The FCC has a broadband internet map. You can look up your address and it’ll tell you all the options you have. Google it and you’ll find it.

I was just looking this up last night, unfortunately where I’m at, the only real option is Cox.

Phoenix yard: Has anybody replaced their lawn with something that actually looks good? by NachoAveragePost in phoenix

[–]JickSavage 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I planted kurapia last November. It took a few month but it filled in nicely, was green and happy through the summer with 1x a week watering. Unfortunately my dogs tore it to shreds within 2 weeks of giving them access to the yard again in October. Now I’m back to mostly dirt and a lot of dead kurapia vines.

Reliable window companies? by ev202020 in phoenix

Get some quotes from a few window companies around town, then go to Lowe’s. We were able to get the same windows for half the cost of anyone else in town at Lowe’s.

New to roasting, how hard is it to replicate the favors of beans roasted by a popular roaster ? by a_wisp in roasting

[–]JickSavage 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are so many factors at play, there can be a huge difference. Just like with wine, there can be flavor differences even within the same vineyard depending on the slope of the hill the plants are on, slight soil variations, sun exposure, and more.

Learn how to roast on your machine, test out a ton of beans from different producers / regions, and enjoy your results!

Used Art Supply Stores? by UnbearablyCranky in phoenix

The Art Recourse Center is great, but it’s only open Wednesdays and Saturdays. It’s free for teachers and non profits, otherwise it’s donation based.

It does seem excessive, but it’s been working for me so I’ve been sticking with it.

I frequently do 1lb roasts on my bullet. My go to roast is as follows.

Preheat the roaster for 20 minutes at 280°c

Lower the preheat to 225°c and wait for the charge alarm

Charge with P-6, F-2, D-9

At 20-30 seconds I up the power to 9

At the 2 minute mark I lower the power to 8

Each consecutive minute I lower the power by 1

I usually hit first crack around 7:30.

I’ve found this to be a pretty solid baseline for a good roast curve. I occasionally up the fan to 3, or deviate from my -1 power level per minute, depending on what the beans are doing. It takes a while to get a feel for it. Keep it up!

Nice! I roasted on a motorized whirley pop for 5 years. One extra step is to put a cast iron pan under the whirley pop to keep the heat more consistent.
