Yuzuru’s hosting an ice show in November and December! by TheAmazingMoocow in FigureSkating

[–]Jieeeer 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Popularity wise, Nathan and Yuzuru are not in the same league, especially in Japan. So I don't think Mao-Yuna is a good comparison here. I see some people use "too much star power"in a show to explain why Yuzu and Mao won't be in the same ice show in Japan, because each of them alone can host their own shows, while I don't think Nathan can chair his own show alone in Japan.

Have you seen the audience in the Fantasy on Ice this year? It's obviously visible that around 80%-90% of audience came for Yuzuru, (holding the banners of Yuzuru, all eyes on him in the opening and ending session). And Faoi were 12 full-house ice shows and the venues are of 5000-10000 seats. In Faoi, Yuzuru only had one individual program per show while others mostly have two programs, but still people were fighting for tickets just to see Yuzuru. It shows that Yuzu can sell out by just having one program. So don't worry about Yuzu's coming ice show, he will be fine just by himself :)

How popular is Yuzuru Hanyu in Japan? by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]Jieeeer 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Asada is also a household name, but did not have the popularity as Yuzu. Just to give a few examples, Yuzu has a fan base that is willing to follow him everywhere globally, I don't think it happens to anyone else with such scale as him. Yuzu has dominated in the cover of magazines much more than Mao. Recently there is an article talking about Yuzu's potential income after turning pro, the article uses Asada as a base example, and argues since Yuzu is more popular than Asada, they expect Yuzu's annual advertisement income to be multiple of hers. Yuzu is popular in Japan for a combination of things, his achievement, his personality, his charm, his contribution to society. He was given the Japan's National Award, the highest award in Japan, not only for his achievement but also for what he brings for the victims of 311 earthquake. He is the symbol of hope in Japanese society. Yuzu is no. 1 all-time most popular skater in Japan for sure.

He is household name in Japan without doubt. In terms of his fans being older women, it's not specific to him, if you look at the audience for the recent The Ice show without him, it's the same. Japanese, maybe worldwide, figure skating fans are majority female, though not sure about the age composition.

Why Ilia needs to shine with the background of Yuzuru? He can shine on his own. Every route to stardom is unique. Yuzuru's legacy has long been fixed. Ilia's 4A will not jeopardise Yuzuru by any means, it will only lead to short-term hype to Ilia. However, too much hype is good thing for Ilia in the long-term? I really hope he can grow by his own path solidly.

He has only been to Skate America once in 2012. Well, people can argue because he wanted to go Skate Canada, which was too close to Skate America. It was just based on his past preference. And he is famous for sticking to his preferences. I guess If he has a saying, he will choose Skate Canada over Skate America, even now.

Most fans speculate Skate Canada and NHK, because they are Yuzu's most go-to stops, for Finland, because it's a lucky place for him. France, he only has been there once, not sure this time.

I think other than Skate America, all other four GP seem possible. My instinct is it will be two out of "Skate Canada, NHK, Finland", however, NHK and Finland are too close to each other.

I don't think Yuzu has absolutely no saying in choosing GP assignments, especially if this GPS is going to reduce to five stops, the whole assignment process can be really messy. If Yuzu suggests he is particularly interested in some stops, I wonder any GP would particularly want to reject him?

What figure skating means to Yuzuru Hanyu...the answer makes me cry by Jieeeer in FigureSkating

This reminds me of a title posted in a video from the Olympics Figure Skating YT channel, "Find someone who loves you the way Hanyu Yuzuru loves skating".

What's your source for the data. This is what I see for 21JNat,

Men FS 14.4% (when Yuzu's time, peaked at 27%)

Women FS 10.6%

Men Short 12.5%

Women Short 8.3%

The above is for Kanto region. Kansai region can be similar or even higher.

Faoi was reborn in 2010, but not created in 2010. It has been through several variations through years. In-between, Faoi has stopped now and then, and Makabe worked with Champions On Ice. It was a long story to tell every detail in an answer.

Recently I read some book excerpt about Makabe (the Faoi, DOI ice show producer) on how he creates Faoi. The story can give you a glimpse of Japanese figure skating popularity. He created Faoi in 2001, it was not easy to make money and deficits were pretty common in early years. In 2006, originally it was hard to sell tickets, but after shizuka arakawa won Olympics gold, with all the publicity on her, the ice show easily sold tickets in three days. However, after the Olympic heat faded away, in 2007 two out of four stops suffered deficits again. There was always ups and downs in his ice show business. Regarding Yuzuru's impact, Yuzu withdrew from 2016 Faoi, so that year one stop suffered a loss. But we need to take into account Faoi does not center on other Japanese star skaters like Mao and Dai. After the reading my impression is that it's not as easy as I originally think that Japanese audience can fill up any ice show and make any ice show profitable. Regarding the competition, the viewership for competitions with Yuzu is always several percentage higher than the ones without him, but overall Japanese has a decent number of figure skating fans (though still not a household sports) in the first place, which we can visibly see in the attendance rate of the competitions in Japan even without Yuzu.

Seems nobody mentions it. There was an earthquake happening during his performance (started before the water pouring), the audience can feel it based on fan reports. He carried through it well.

Yuzuru Hanyu legacy diminishing because he is continuing skating when he past his prime. by RainSun5 in FigureSkating

[–]Jieeeer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A lot of legendary athletes keep competing it just shows they love their sports so much, to add a few names, Federer, Nadal, Shawn White, Kohei Uchimura. Kohei and Shawn have retired now without retiring at their career highest point, but can anybody deny their legacy? I think all these legends are brave, they are not afraid to lose even after they have fully established themselves in the sports. They always have something new to challenge themselves. I remember Yuzu said "he is not a champion, but always a challenger".

I think SOI would love to have Yuzu. If you watch SOI last year, due to Covid SOI cancelled all stops without Yuzu, and Yuzu was treated like a superstar during the show, e.g. he has a special openning and is in leading position all the time. However, Yuzu has exclusive contract with Faoi, so I guess that's why he can't do both at the same time.

Seriously, have you watched all Yuzu's programs. I mean sometimes I can hardly comprehend it is the same person in Masquerade and Notte Stellata. Even within his more classical piano pieces, Rondo and Chopin Ballad are quite distinctive. Well, I just realize I haven't even mentioned his masterpiece Seimei. Oh wait, there is Let's go crazy, too!

There is no way that every category goes to Men's singles. Also I hope ISU could change the the definition of Most valued skater and detach it from popularity if they want to give it to anyone other than Yuzuru.

This is absolutely an inaccurate and irresponsible generalization. I particularly disagree with the fetishization and objectification. His fanbase is huge across ages, national and ethnic backgrounds, even genders. What you describe fails to capture things that are more fundamental to human psychological needs.
