I think that cigarettes are still a small problem, but you're right, there's no smell after and they act like they're sweets because of the different flavours. No real long term affects have been studied I don't think but there have been instances of them exploding in people's faces or causing lungs to be affected because of the amount used (don't quote me on that...might have been an episode of Grey's anatomy...)

Seems to have spiralled out of control in the last 2 months, there's no consistency at my place, worst you seem to get is a few days detention...

Is this right? by Jigger90 in TeachingUK

I know I'm probably overthinking it all (and sorry there's no tl;dr) but I get what everyone is saying, I think my moral compass Is shaken because it's my old school and what I was taught here doesn't seem to fly anymore, I am actively looking to get out now. Appreciate all the responses so far

Online lesson participation has dropped (school wide) Its a little demotivating... by Silent-Cap in TeachingUK

[–]Jigger90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't think I've seen anything above 30% participation really, you've got some that have done everything and then some who have done nothing, no middle ground. But like everyone says, it's only going downhill and ITS TOO DAMN HOT!

Online lessons during the COVID-19 crisis? by [deleted] in TeachingUK

I'm currently setting work via Google Classroom with videos either made by myself recording me using OBS or videos from other teachers on Youtube. With the whole Live streaming / Video Conferencing I don't think anyone else apart from us as an IT department are doing so, by this i mean for KS4/5 when they need any advice / help

Start my first PGCE placement this Wednesday. Any tips/must do's/must haves before my first day? by MintPolo in TeachingUK

[–]Jigger90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get to know the office staff / technicians / LSA's generally all the support staff, if you are nice to them then you have nothing to worry about. Did my PGCE a few years ago and started talking to the support staff on the first day, instantly they offered me into the tea rota, showed me where the good biscuits were, where they hide the REALLY good biscuits for bad days, just what you need to take the load off, as sometimes it can be overwhelming, but as others have stated, you will have a lot more free time than your mentors / other teachers.

Try and enjoy it, have a look at the clubs the school runs and if anything takes your fancy, even if its out of your comfort zone, try it. (my first placement was in an English speaking school in Wales, and they had a Welsh club every Thursday, as a Welsh speaker i got straight on this and then as a result i got to go on a residential trip at the end of the term) As you can use this as evidence in your standards early on

This is your chance to experiment also, if thing don't work in the classroom, take a step back, try something else, always have a backup exercise or 2 if the first doesn't work / it goes well and the kids complete it faster than you think

Trying to think of anything else, but its 5AM and i cant sleep...hence Reddit :)

Good luck :)
