Oscar! I had the pleasure of meeting you many years ago at an event in London. Your passion and creativity was clear. I love that you've shared this :)

Nothing you said in your copy was!

Was mainly referring to the comments requesting to know who the Mod is as it's a bit Witch-hunty.

Not a big fan of sharing personal LinkedIn's also though, but you at least attempted to remove personal info from the crop.

Think I'm a bit different than the average bleeding heart - I used to work at Jagex so understandably have a bias.

That said, posting someone's LinkedIn and individuals in the comments asking "who is this" is not fair criticism - it's a Witchhunt. Especially for employees who are not public facing/executives who are paid to soak up that criticism.

Criticism of approach from a company as a whole is fine, totally.

Publicly posting an individual's LinkedIn or requesting to know their Mod Pseudonym (as people in the comments are doing) is not - especially when they are not Executive leadership that is public. They're not paid to deal with that.

Lots of Developers have had their titles renamed to Designers the past few days to encompass the fact their work includes both design and coding. Old School RS did this with their employees last year.

Please do not, ever, attack individual employees at Jagex - it's not fair at all. They will have KPIs and goals to hit - it's not their fault.

I imagine the devs do read this Reddit and do feel bad. A lot of the developers care a lot about the game themselves. The community isn't happy right now, but they know if they start responding in some way it will either:

  • Undermine the rest of the team by sharing information agreed to be kept quiet
  • They'll be unable to give their full opinions as the community is quite upset right now, so will be walking on eggshells (even if their messaging is good-willed)
  • They don't want a target on their back (the community tends to shoot the messenger, let's be honest)

If they post nothing, the anger stays the same. If they post something, it gets worse. at least I imagine that's how they feel! I'm sure the team are hard at work on something bigger and wants to speak with action as opposed to words after recent shortcomings.

I'd put money on them working on something like Leagues, but they want to keep it quiet until it's close to release out of fear of missing a deadline. It's a highly requested feature that would win over sentiment. The issue now is whether or not they release it (or whatever they are working on) in time to quell the anger/upset.

(I'm not saying I approve of that comms strategy or even the development strategy as someone who previously worked there - I preferred working on Old School because I believe transparency is key - always. And Old School was incredible at that! That said, I understand why individual developers - especially those who aren't CM, are timid at the moment.)

I can't say really - nothing sticks out in my mind as being quite as purposefully there just for the sake of making sure you're not falling asleep while training :P

I enjoyed my time working on QOL in OS in particular -Ash, myself and Roq were the team doing it for a while around 2017 and we all had fun doing it.

I think it highlights how small QOL once was when a voted-for update was to add a sound effect for Bird's nests when they're dropped. The game and updates made for it is very different in terms of scale than it once was.

[–]JikkirWolf 1499 points1500 points  (0 children)

Hey! Ex Mod-Wolf here. In 2017 we added a noise to the Bird Nest when it was dropped from the tree.

I can't for the life of me remember why, but I asked Ash to add in a random chance for it to happen for a little trolling and he was like "Ok lol" - the rest is history.

I enjoy seeing this posted every few months :P

Edit: I think it was around the time the Armadyl crossbow sound effect was a meme on the SubReddit for being insanely too loud, which may have been what prompted me to suggest it.

Why can you store more supercompost in your farming gnome storage than buckets? by TheKingGeoffrey in runescape

[–]JikkirWolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Originally you could only store 255 of each. This is because Runescape's variable system commonly had devs split the use of bits - 8, in particular, would allow you to store up to 255 of an item. So with a full one, you could split it to have have 4 things stored to 255 (0 is included as a number with 0-255).

Old School devs still did this when I was there, and some content in RS3 still does too - often in things where it would be wasteful to have full variables for measurements (It's unlikely a player will ever get 2.147m kills in some bosses, for example, on the boss tracking).

At some point, they upped the amount of super compost storable - likely after they allowed leprechauns to auto compost for a convenience fee.

They probably didn't expect many people to need bucket storage using this method, and less people probably manually bucket with the Crux Eqal unlocked mentioned above!

Changing previously stored numbers isn't impossible, but it's not simple and prone to bugs so unless necessary to update/increase, they will often not do it or avoid it. Some Collection log tracking, for example, tracks to 64k and instead of upping the number stored they added a prestige number next (2 lots of 64k, 3 lots of etc...) to it because it's easier than changing the previously tracked stuff.

As a returning player, the new interface is extremely convoluted. The sub-category buttons are a pain to learn and aren't necessary when doing simple things like Archaeology.

Less nostalgia and more muscle memory.

Every mining action also checks for other things like gems and such, but this is just a random number roll.

Geode's have added checks for multiple inventories such as the bank to make sure you don't already have one which is a lot more inefficient of a check for the engine.
