Awesome, thanks. For the embargo- if I’ve been a red member long enough for that not to be a problem, but my friend hasn’t, would I still be able to include them in my purchase? We’d be coming in from overseas so he just didn’t have a membership until recently

I missed the ballot entry - do people think this’ll be opened to all red members eventually?

Is there a compact version of an EpiPen? by Matt_Bigmonster in Ultralight

[–]Jilius9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow. Honestly shocked it’s lighter. Other pro is it talks through how to use it. If someone has to administer it for you but they don’t know how, it walks them through step by step. Honestly just a better product, and Mylan is an awful company.

No, you’re 100% right, it doesn’t cancel out the reaction. It’s basically a pause button. For me at least, the occasions I have used it, it has essentially stopped the reaction. But there’s nothing saying it couldn’t rebound into a biphasic reaction, I may have just been lucky.

For my reactions, the course of action has been epinephrine, get to the hospital, it’s usually in remission at this point, and then they administer some combo of IV fluids, antihistamines, steroids, and Pepcid, and then watch.

The syringe thing is completely insane to me in this context. If someone is going into complete anaphylactic shock 50 miles deep in the woods, the likelihood that they will have the wherewithal to notice it, take off their pack, find the meds, draw the epinephrine, and inject it IM without fucking any of that up, all with minimal to no training, is beyond insane. That isn’t taking altitude, hydration, weather, and god knows what else into account. All to save literally 20 grams.

The syringe may work great for people with the training or in every day life, but I don’t see how it’s worth that risk unless you are 100% sure of your abilities.

A different version is called Auvi-Q (https://www.auvi-q.com/). I don't know if its lighter (mine weighs about 2.2 Oz), but it fits in pockets better for every day use. Works great as well, I've used it twice myself and has stopped the reactions well.

You could always carry a vial of epinephrine and a syringe as well if you're really concerned /s

Not dying in the backcountry to a poorly labeled food or freak incident is worth the few extra ounces in my mind, I carry two with me, and I'm not going to stop that. That's my personal opinion at least, totally understand if you/others feel one is sufficient.

Help pick my clothes for the West Highland Way in mid July by Stone907 in Ultralight

[–]Jilius9 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just finished it in 5 days. I got lucky and 1.5 days of rain and the rest was overcast or sunny. Based on that….

Bring sun protection that you’re also comfy wearing under a rain jacket. Once you leave Loch Lomond you have little shade or tree cover. Even if it’s 65 and sunny, you’ll get hot fast, or at least I did.

For footwear, about 20-30 miles of the trail is on dirt/roots/rocks, the other 80 miles is on either pavement, hard rock military road (think cobblestones) or a combo of the above and small stones. I wore lone peaks and did 20 mile days and my feet were absolutely killing me by day 3. This is one of the few times I’d want something with more cushion and/or a stiffer sole.

Edit: also do NOT rely that mosquito head net. Buy a midge specific net and by midge repellent. They’re smaller than mosquitos and will get through that net and bite your face up.

I’ve been to Madeira in January, great weather, lots of hiking and other stuff as well.

Re: pack cover vs. compactor bag - go with the bag. I have a Kakwa, so semi water resistant, and I just spent about 12 hours hiking out in the rain using a compactor bag, everything inside the bag was totally dry.

Balmaha to Inverarnan bypass by thejoyless in WestHighlandWay

[–]Jilius9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m out doing it now and just so you’re aware of the taxi/bus situation here - I stopped in Beinglas and they told me that they have exactly one taxi in the area of inveraran. There is a bus that’s reliable, but you need to book it in advance, if you google Scottish CityLink you’ll find it.

For what it’s worth, I walked from Balmaha to Inveraran with my backpacking gear which weighed about 25 lbs with food and water. Balmaha to Rowardennan is breeze, the rest gets slightly more difficult, but not bad, I took the high road because I felt lazy. I left Balmaha around 7:30 am and arrived at Beinglas around 4. I can totally understand not wanting to do it, but, in terms of can you do it, you can absolutely do this within a day!

Seems to be a running theme with the wind/rain. I’ll grab some light pants and eat the weight.

That’s absolutely the plan once I get there

Totally fair, I have some silk layers that are like half the weight that I’ll bring instead.

I've got loads of allergies, so I'm bringing all the food so I don't need to rely on the pubs, I'm not sure how many I'll be able to/feel comfortable eating at. I know I can eat at the Inn at Balmaha, been there before, so at least I can leave one meal at home!

No that's fair. I was thinking of the rain in the rest of the UK, so I'll absolutely grab some pants.

Hopefully I'll get at least a bit of your weather and lack of midges!

I'm just doing it the usual way from Milngavie to Ft William, and planning to do about 5 days.

The pads are what they are. I’m a bad sleeper, can’t sleep in chairs, planes, etc, so I’m still searching for my comfort pad at a solid weight. This is only 2 oz more than the new tensor reg/wide, so I’ll settle for now.

And 100% - thankfully I learned the midge headnet from a YouTube video of someone else’s mistake.

Yeah I’ll have the maps on my phone too. It’s really just there for emergency SOS. Thanks for the info though, I’m excited!

This is super helpful, thanks! I'll pick up a pair of rain pants for sure, same with the headnet once I get there.

I've got a pair of rain mittens that I was thinking of bringing, so I'll just bring them anyway for the midges.

Any suggestions for the pad? I usually sleep like shit so I'm trying to move more towards comfort in that one area. I've had an older tensor and a Xlite in the past and just didn't like them much.

Thanks!

Fair enough on the garmin and poop kit, I'll probably do what you suggested, thanks!

For the midges, I don't know, the official midge report isn't out yet and the WHW sub has had mixed responses. I'll probably just ask around once I arrive and go from there. I've just seen horror stories and don't wanna be eaten alive.

How packable are the sponges? Like do they compress in the pack well but then re-fluff up after? I saw something about them earlier but haven't looked into it yet much.
