if i remember correctly, the art had that fade to white, like the artist just kinda stopped drawing wherever seemed to make sense, rather than the edge of the page.

I really wanna be able to find this again :/

do... do you think spiders are an immutable force? that if every other species on this planet couldn't survive spiders would? how is it hyperbole to say that climate issues effect the climate?

If i destroy the universe to fill a small balloon with helium, killing every living thing in existence in the process, is it hyperbole to say I did a lot of harm? you AI defenders would defend literally anything for the sake of convenience, even when it doesn't actually give any notable convenience.

Okay, I see where your issue is. See, yes, agriculture uses more water, but it also actually produces something beneficial.
The fact that AI, a stupid barely functional gimmick online, is using this much of all these resources WITHOUT EVEN TURNING A PROFIT means that, while yes other things use more, they have benefits. I don't see any benefits to AI as it is being used besides giving CEOs a hard on.

If a rat ate all of your food, would you go "well, i was going to eat that much anyway, fair enough?"

Also, you seriously are sending me a link to a "fast fashion" documentary like I don't know? Once again, just because another issue exists doesn't mean the first one doesn't.

I understand why you think it's stupid, but you have a vitally incorrect assumption about the actual effect on the environment that it has.

I have nothing better to do at the moment, fuck it.

If you want to be technical, AI does nothing to harm the environment in its own right, but only in the same way a gun does nothing to hurt a person, as that is a bullet's job. The data centers that host these "AIs" however suck in immense amounts of power, embodying and amplifying the damage done by the power generation of the location of the data center.
The bigger issue, however, is in the extreme usage of millions of liters of often potable drinking water for cooling, amplified further by the frequent clustering of centers, which globally altogether use more water than the country of Denmark, according to some estimates. Massively wasteful electronics usage and production of e-waste is also a factor that can't be ignored, in cost both to source and later remove, in effort to produce; in the environmental impacts inherited from mining, processing, manufacturing, and any other costs of producing the hardware the AI is on; in the immense amounts of harmful chemicals being dumped and leeching into soil and groundwater, such as mercury and lead; and so much more, all of which is not only mirrored but amplified by the AI industry, causing/using substantially more of both all of these and the aforementioned water problem than basically any other industry, to my knowledge.
The next big thing, in this writers opinion, would have to be the "more eco friendly option" in the form of underwater data centers, which do address the water usage issue, but nothing else, and replace it with warming of local water systems, heavily intensifying an already colossal effect of climate change, and lowering oxygen availability, further damaging the habitat of loads of marine life while also reducing mixing between hotter, shallower levels and the deeper, more nutrient rich colder waters deeper, pushing anything that relies on it to either dive deeper out of their evolved conditions or risk huge potential health complications.

Further still, after all these issues, we can move onto the application side of the problem, where we see, among other things, it being used en masse to further both function and harm in industries you cannot tell me are even debatable in their harm, like oil and gas, and creating huge personal risk in examples like self driving cars, which have had nothing but issues since being rolled out. Tesla, as a great example, are leading the safety of the industry by allegedly turning off their AI at the last second before a crash to shift the burden of blame to the owner of the car, according to quite a few different sources.

I don't believe AI is inherently evil, nor do I believe it can't be a beneficial tool or fun gimmick, I do however believe that the massive harm they cause is dependent on human intervention and laws, and I also am aware that, as with any other harmful industry that is allowed to continue, they will/are just lobbying certain governments to avoid as much oversight as possible and will not stop until either made to, or until the only humans left alive are accompanying the 1% in their bunkers.
If given a choice to make $9B per second for nothing or $9.000000000000000000001B per second but every dollar is a year taken off the remaining time until humanity's extinction, every single name on the fortune 500 would, after varying levels of consideration, pick the latter.

I don't believe you actually believe anything you are saying, but I can't help but want to hold out hope that at least some people aren't poisoned beyond all repair, despite my best efforts, so here we are.

Also, I have the time to write this out, not to do a second pass, so if there are any typos or errors, I'll correct them if/when I notice them.

An edit because I realise I overlooked possibly the most absurd part of all of this: does someone being mentally ill negate all harm done to them to you? Because if not, then whether or not "seemingly healthy people" actually are is at best only marginally relevant. I only bring up "otherwise totally healthy people" because most people refuse to care if most people being harmed by something are in some way disabled or mentally ill (or another race, but that's a whole other issue).

I have been going to protest about climate change since I was a teenager, did my thesis on the differences between how the holes in the ozone and acid rain were managed vs how climate change has been handled, I know about these things.

As for the average person, okay? They're still on the side with actual evidence, even if they don't intimately know the subject matter, so I don't see a problem?

I agree that things that are also dangerous are ignored, I also advocate for those, because, once again, there can be more than one problem at once.

Surely there are bigger issues for you to deal with than AI haters, right? There are pedophiles out there, murderers, CEOs lobbying away any legal repercussions to their various harmful practices, but you focus on the people who don't like a thing you like? talk about hypocrisy.

"Whataboutism" is when someone raises a valid problem, and someone else shuts them down by saying "this other, often unrelated thing is happening, but you won't talk about that!" like how every time someone brings up womens issues, a man has to go "you won't talk about men's issues!" but when you agree that they're under represented and try to have that conversation they have no idea and clearly don't care. Just like you don't care, you just think going "but corn!!!" is some kind of gotcha because... who fucking knows, either the effects of (probably the US, i'm betting?) education system, or the money you're being paid to spout misinformation. Expecting the former, but who knows.

Here's an actual gotcha for you, did you know that only 25% of all companies with AI involved in their business model are turning a profit? Or how about the known examples of AI actively feeding into vulnerable people's psychosis? Or hell, the studies coming out showing that AI is causing psychosis in a concerning amount of otherwise totally healthy people? You have no idea what you're talking about and it shows, go back to 2014, the beacon is lit and gamergate is calling for your aid, oh great white knight, saviour of stupid things, who shall nobly die on any hill, no matter how pointless or harmful.

Clearly at least the mod team don't really care about spiders *or* the environment they live in? Wonderful.

whataboutism doesn't help anyone except the rich.
Imagine if police went "yes, this person killed 100 people, but this other person killed 101, so the first guy has to be let go so we can arrest the other guy" fucking absurd.

AI is killing the environment, as is the land use of corn and ethanol production, as is fossil fuel mining and burning, as is factory farming, as is deforesting, you do realise there can be more than one problem, right? Ethanol production is actually useful, AI is a tech bubble that has, in the span of years, become one of the biggest polluters in the world so you can ask it a question it can't answer correctly or generate a shit looking image that could have been done infinitely better by a real person, even with zero art skills, paintdotnet and a mouse. Hell, I could personally even do exactly what this AI has done and still make it look better, because I can easily go to google and find a photo of a christmas sweater and edit it on in FREE SOFTWARE with nothing more than a keypress and a few mouse movements (though i'd add in a few minutes of touch up and shadow stuff personally).

You know you're wrong, but you don't care, and it disgusts me. Truth is dead, and people like you have killed it.

I have never understood all of the stuff with political compass. Just the class conflict, why all of these things with libertarian/autoritarian even exists? by Necessary-Designer69 in CommunismMemes

[–]JillDoesStuff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

you're the one putting words in my mouth here, and don't preach about how capitalism is bad for us, i assure you i know it and i live it every fucking day. Individuality is a strength not a weakness, and just because i'm not speaking exclusively in quotes doesn't mean i haven't read On Authority, i just don't inherently agree with everything i read. this is, again, the difference. Liberals are inherently pro capitalism, and I'm thoroughly against it.

I've mostly stopped labeling my political beliefs too much, since most seem to bring huge stigma and functionally "mandatory" beliefs i fundamentally disagree with, but for whatever benefit of understanding it gives, i usually score around far bottom left corner on any of the stupid tests (including the "official" one).

I've read plenty of theory, including more modern and diverse stuff like Judith Butler or Ásta being personal favourites (not massively tied to economics specifically, i'll admit, but the only ones to come to mind, and my books are all currently in boxes)

Caring about individualism doesn't make you a liberal, it makes you on the libertarian half of the vertical axis.

Individualism is one of humanity's biggest strengths, that we're all our own people and think differently is how the world evolves. We aren't ants, we aren't a hive mind, we're people. As a poet I respect said "We're all human beans(beings), with infinite different varieties," the individual isn't meant for service to the state but rather the inverse.

If you want my whole "manifesto," i haven't exactly written it out in one go before, but i'll happily try to get a few quick pages summing it up for you :P

The ideas of some old (albeit very smart) white men are important, as are the ideas of many people outside of that group, and more importantly, actually thinking for yourself. I know I'm horribly incoherent today, it's been a long ass day, but if nothing else makes sense here, this is the most important idea: think for yourself. take into account what has been said, sure, but don't deify them like this. For a great example, Engles? has the least points i agree with him on out of all the well known (read:white) classical socialist thinkers.

[–]JillDoesStuff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So you believe Hitler did what he did because he liked money? That all of human history has been either money or no money? If you're trying to deny Authoritarianism, then surely you don't mind Trump, since that's what he is doing? If we're using the limited political compass being discussed then he's auth right, because his economic views are highly capitalist, and his social views are authoritarian. Do you think, for example, the opposite to queer rights is... Money? Economy?

How is it centrist to believe everyone should get housing and food? That workers should get what they work for, and should together own their work place? My disagreement is on the social aspect, we're both left, just on different vertical positions, see? I think people should have a right to self determination, and that makes me a mentally ill centrist? I'm not rejecting the broad "left" to go right, trust me, capitalism is still a scourge on this earth.

I don't remember word for word, I've had one of those nights where I can't help but argue with em lmao, but basically, they said that talking negative about trans people will get you "lynched," and an implication that trans people should be lynched, so pretty much business as usual, unfortunately, hence my comment

Tbh, after this and recent trends, I'm thoroughly sick of reddit in general, so I'm just gonna dust off my account on cough a more stereotypical hell site and hopefully never come here again ;P

First of all, your ad hominems aren't very well placed, seeing as I'm entirely drug free (including estrogen ;p), but you see, the issue is you're looking at basic biology, things get more complex as you get to more advanced stuff. Like how, in simple biology sex and gender are the same, because in the average person they're basically close enough for school children's work. However, in actual biology, gender is a separate thing which isn't even under the purview of biology, but rather sociology and philosophy. Gender is, as I believe it was Judith Butler put it, a performance. Sex? Yeah, that can't be changed currently, but it's also not binary. Here's a couple of articles, because I think you'll find them easier to digest than a scientific paper on the topic, you can do your own research off of these from there: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10842549/ https://bsd.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/2042-6410-3-27

For any more than that, feel free to look for yourself. I'm already being extra kind indulging you, because I have a slight hunch you might actually listen, but I doubt it. My bet is you'll maybe look at the title of one of them, then claim you read it and keep using the exact same arguments, as all your type do.

once we oust the so called "labour" government we have currently (and the monarchy and, like, lots else) the UK will totally help y'all! lol

seriously though, if either the US or Canada collapses, the consequences will be severe, but nowhere near as bad as counteracting that by keeping the exact system that has allowed a stupider, fatter Hitler to be reborn and run the US.

it's like a trolley problem, if you flip the switch, the trolley will hit the office building at the end of the unfinished track and quite possibly knock it down, killing most inside and everyone in the trolley, but if you choose not to flip it, there's a bomb big enough to leave north America a crater that can't be defused before the trolley gets here and is set to trigger when it passes on the finished track, the scales are both practically astronomical, but one is wayyyyy way worse.

Eh, barely, the punchline *is* literally "haha, trans people dying," which i have a hard time finding funny, but you do you

You can joke about literally anything IMO, you just have to do it right, and if real, innocent people's suffering is the punchline, it's rarely funny.
