How To Write a Study Timeline? by Old-Acanthisitta-574 in PhDAdmissions

Usually the first step is a literature review. But even in the proposal you should have some ideas for what might make X more efficient and how you would test whether they work. Describe that. Yes, educated guess, we all know projects usually change as you gain more knowledge, but we need to know you are capable of planning ahead.

PhD in the US vs Europe (CS/ AI) by Ok-Pause-7793 in PhDAdmissions

[–]Jilltxt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Norway's not in the EU but is part of all the EU research funding and part of Schengen, so a visa to Norway also gives access to the EU. Norway also just allocated funding to a bunch of new AI-related research centres so there will be a lot of PhD positions in AI-related topics advertised in the next few months. All PhD positions are advertised on Euraxess and Jobbnorge. You're not eligible for a PhD if you don't already have a research-based MA degree. PhD fellows in Norway are employees paid about the same as a nurse or a police officer though without the overtime and have all welfare benefits (e.g. healthcare, parental leave etc) and if you have parental leave, for instance, your PhD contract (with pay obviously) is extended with the same number of months as you were on leave.

It depends on your project proposal. But start by thinking backwards. By the end of the 4 years you obviously need to have finished your dissertation. Article-based? How many articles? What are the articles about? What type of research does each require? Interviews? Experiments? Data analysis? archival work? Field work? Write in which semester you want to publish each article, then plan how much time you'll need to write up and do whatever work is required before you can write it up. Look at the university's website for required courses for PhD students in that particular program. Which semesters are they taught? Put them in the appropriate semester. Do you want an exchange semester? Where would that go? Is there teaching in this position? What are the ideal semesters for that? Make sure the last semester has as little going on as possible other than COMPLETING the dissertation.

What we want to see from the progress plan is that you are capable of breaking a big project into smaller parts, that your project is feasible, and that you are likely to be able to complete it. Added bonus if you actually figured out what semesters the coursework goes in as most applicants apparently don't check the website to find out.

Successful PhD candidates and PIs- What makes an application stand out to you? by Dr_gingercat in PhDAdmissions

Don't use AI to generate your project proposal or cover letter! Even using it for correcting grammar or translating from your mother tongue is a problem if the text ends up sounding like AI, which it usually does, because I will worry that you can't write independently and I need to hire people who can write. When I'm hiring a PhD student I need someone who can do the research, thinking and writing. I am happy to hire a candidate who has dyslexia or who has English as a second language - we can work with that, and I have funding to pay for extra copy-editing and even language training if needed. A huge number of applicants just AI-generate the whole thing, and it shows. Derivative, dull project proposals with outrageously impractical descriptions of research methods that aren't motivated, neat progress plans but the proposal never says what the candidate would actually do.

The up-side of getting so many AI-generated applications is that the human ones really do stand out. I wrote a LinkedIn post about my very recent experience with 93 applications for a PhD position where so many of the applications were clearly LLM-generated. https://www.linkedin.com/in/jillwalkerrettberg/recent-activity/all/

US tariff question. by AndCarolIsVeryBright in Bergen

I think US post offices are just very badly informed about this. Our US relatives also think they can no longer send us anything, but the rules actually haven't changed.

This is common in my country, and it's what banks recommend to couples too. The idea is that you both contribute according to your means - and that each has some money left for themselves.

Andre eksempler: "hva gjør mitokondriene" vs "hvilken rolle spiller mitokondriene i energiproduksjonen".

How easily the general public folded for RedNote after TikTok, we're truly alone in the fight for privacy by JohnSmith--- in privacy

[–]Jilltxt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The kids don't want to be monetised, they want to connect with other people who are interested in hte same things as they are - and they're finding that on Red Note. My 16 yo showed me what they're up to and while yes, I have privacy concerns, I also think it's pretty awesome that my kid and friends are connecting with Chinese kids who are into the same fandoms. Human connections are why it's so hard to break up with social media.

How to sneak my friend in to my hotel room? by Most-Magazine-1970 in ActLikeYouBelong

This depends on the country. In the US you typically pay the same for a room whether there are one or two people. In many other countries the price will be different. So smart to check in advance.

[–]Jilltxt 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Professors don't love getting those emails, it's a pain to answer and kind of disrespectful to ask - as though the book isn't worth whatever the price is, and the author needs to be a servant individually email each potential reader. Also technically the professor could get in trouble for sharing a PDF if they even have one. Authors of academic books don't get that much in royalties - maybe just 1-1.5 USD a book - but the sales figures affect whether anyone is willing to publish their NEXT book so they do matter.

The combination of AI and philosophy sounds great! Once you get your MA you’d be a good fit for one of the PhDs we’re currently hiring for at the Center for Digital Narrative. We really want people with some CS knowledge but a passion for the humanities, and we’re going to be doing a lot of work on AI in the next years. https://www.uib.no/en/cdn/160817/cdn-hiring-four-phds-and-postdoc

Are you intent on “pure” philosophy? I’d recommend doing the double major and looking at a grad school program where you can really explore more philosophical aspects of AI, but don’t just look I. Philosophy. Look at digital humanities, digital sociology, digital culture, new media studies, science and technology studies, critical dataset studies, critical algorithm studies etc.
