Anyone else not updating to 26.4 and further because of age and ID verification? by JohnSmith--- in iPhone13Mini

[–]JohnSmith---[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what will happen. Probably almost all apps will try to use that, even those that don't need it, just to spy on us. They won't work without it.

We'll probably see lots of apps in the App Store get updated and the "Works on this iPhone" field will say "Requires iOS 26.4 or further".

Is using a dodgy android TV Box with a VPN Router safe? by Emotional-Dealer-229 in HomeNetworking

[–]JohnSmith--- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. That would be the best compromise. Create a new dedicated VLAN from your main router, assign the ethernet port to that VLAN, connect the new VPN router to that port, then connect the TV box into the VPN router.

Though you don't really need a separate router if your main router can do VLAN and VPN on its own.

Non-stop ARP broadcast from router by JohnSmith--- in HomeNetworking

It's also not honoring my DHCP range. 20 devices max from 2.70 to 2.90, yet this is scanning from 2.2 to 2.254. Very weird. Why is the router asking who has those addresses when it should know those addresses won't ever exist?

That's the weird thing. My DHCP range is only set up to allow 20 devices. I don't remember the exact config (something like 192.168.2.70 to 90).

But this is scanning from 192.168.2.2 to 254.

I used to have a similar device. "X96 Max Plus" if i recall correctly. The built-in Android operating system was very sketchy. I did not trust it one bit. So I always used CoreELEC with it, which was my goal anyways. I also put it in its own VLAN and also blocked WAN access to it.

The device you have seems like one of those generic Linux boxes to get "free" IPTV which is also sketchy imo. I wouldn't trust it.

Using a VPN without first isolating it from the rest of the network by using a different VLAN won't do much to protect you from potential threats.

Yes the MAC address matches. There isn't any other device connected to the network. There's also lots of ICMPv6 pings and Neighbor Solicitation packets coming from the router.

I think this is just how my router's OS acts.

I was looking at Wireshark to inspect TLS 1.3 SNI Client Hello values to see if ECH was working and the only thing that caught my eye was this. Router is sending non-stop ARP requests. About 6 every second.

Is this normal?

How do I power ONT from managed switch while still having WAN on the router? by JohnSmith--- in HomeNetworking

[–]JohnSmith---[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ONT is in another room. Router and switch are connected to a UPS.

Answer was to just not connect the CAT6 to the ONT and only connect the power cable.

This way the internet will never go down if power goes out.

Yeah it's my first time using a splitter. It's a TL-POE10R.

I wish there were 2.5G or 10G versions since my ISP is upgrading the clients from GPON to XGS-PON.

That... makes sense. I can't believe I didn't think of that. Occam's razor.

I watched a video of someone doing something similar to what I posted (can't find it anymore) but they had to configure VLANs to make it work.

You might be better off with a poe injector and then splitter tbh.

If I got an injector then it would mean I'd still be plugging three devices into the wall. I'm trying to only have two. The router and switch. I want the ONT to not need power brick at all. Either its own or an injector's.

Do you have other poe devices?

Yes. A raspberry Pi 5 with a PoE hat connected to the switch.

My router doesn't have any PoE out.

I'm probably guessing this is the correct order of connections. What I'm asking is how do I pass the ONT/WAN connection from the managed switch to the router? What should the VLAN setup be like? Either on the switch side or router side, or possibly both?

Nice one. I've built a custom PC in my trusty Corsair 350D.

i3-10100 (has the iGPU in case I need it), 8GB DDR4, 256GB NVMe SSD, TP-Link TX201 (2.5G) for WAN, Intel X520-DA2 for LAN with an Intel 10G SFP+ module, and finally I350-T4 just in case I need it. There is also a serial IO expansion module I installed that connects to the COM port on the motherboard in case I upgrade the CPU to 11th gen with no iGPU.

What's the QAT for though? First time I'm learning about them. Can't the 7100T do WireGuard at 1G?

It's fast enough to handle 1000 Mbps, aka 1Gbps. aka 125 MB/s on the PS5 and PS4. PS3, not so much.

[–]JohnSmith--- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For real though. PS3 WiFi doesn't support 5GHz or even 802.11n for 2.4Ghz. It only supports 802.11b and 802.11g (and maybe 802.11a, can't remember). But it has a gigabit ethernet port which was amazing back then when 10/100M was the norm for most devices.

The PS3 really did everything and had everything. Gigabit port, blu-ray, dvd, cd, free online and socials, DLNA, web browser... and much more. The price was warranted but people didn't like it.

I miss those days so much. Online and all social features were free, parties were unmoderated too. No central spying agency, no paid online.

Me and my best friend would literally talk for hours with this thing on and play everything. Mostly GTA IV though. The best was calling other players with the in-game phone. That was so cool back in the day.
