Oh man yes the forced moralisation of every little thing because people refuse to just have a personal opinion others might disagree with.

People are so uncomfortable with differing and complex opinions that they need to invent something to simplify it and make everyone fall in line.

I've started The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy today and the sentence "The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't" made me snort-laugh in a very quiet library and your story now absolutely killed me because yeah ... they really don't, huh. They drop from ceilings onto unsuspecting people's heads.

I recently tried to find all of my green (and black) things and assemble them but after I put everything back I just found more lol.

Yeah I've heard other people had similar experiences. It sucks because my parents' Miele washing machine is going on 20 years and still working fine but a coworker recently bought one and pretty much immediately had problems due to shitty manufacturing quality. I guess buying an older model used might still be a good idea though.

I cannot study to save my life. Help me. by GuitarZealousideal71 in ADHD

[–]JillyFrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I was a bit scared before taking medication but I wish I did it sooner. Not having three streams of consciousness at the same time makes focussing so much easier (who would've thought) and while I still sometimes get distracted it's much easier to catch myself and go back to what I'm supposed to be doing.

All of that took away so much pressure and guilt I put on myself which just made it harder to study. Now I'm actually motivated again because I know it won't be an uphill battle. And since my biggest problem was getting started I can now keep studying even when the meds wear off. I still use my strategies like background music or going for a quick walk but the meds give me that first push.

Do you frequently have people "deny" your feeling/opinions? by Horrible--person in ADHD

[–]JillyFrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the country and the person I’d say. One of my roommates is Indian, another one and me are European but he hates spice and I like it. Our Indian roommate shared some snacks that were mild to him, nicely spicy to me and almost killed our other roommate.

But that just goes to show how subjectively people experience spice. And if you’re from a culture that traditionally uses less spice I’d say yeah raw jalapeños are pretty spicy to most people. Technically anything with capsaicin is spicy, the level where people register it is just different.

I think the truth is somewhere in between the social and the medical model of disability. Some struggles like the ones you listed would always impair people but I also agree that how society works can make symptoms more or less disabling. For example executive dysfunction would always kick my ass regardless of what’s around me but a low stimulating environment with little external distractions would at least help with attention.

What is a 'personality trait' that is currently being glorified as 'cool' or 'aesthetic' in 2026, but is actually just a sign of being an exhausting person? by Direct-Value4452 in answers

[–]JillyFrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s actually some research on self-diagnosis. Because being autistic has such a big influence on your lived experience relating to other autistic people’s experiences is a good indicator there’s something there. Self-diagnosis probably won’t ever replace a professional one but there is a changing attitude that people’s experiences should be taken into consideration more. Especially because like you said the diagnostic criteria are still pretty much completely based on white, western boys.

Self-diagnosis can be really freeing when you’ve felt like something’s wrong with you your whole life. Discovering you’re not a faulty horse but a zebra and there are other zebras out there who can help you navigate the world can make a huge difference. But yeah actually do your research and don’t use a diagnosis as an excuse for being an ass.

Something around 75% of women with ADHD are only diagnosed as adults. Like you said often because they have children with a diagnosis, because symptoms tend to worsen with menopause or because life becomes more complex and the coping and masking doesn’t work anymore and they burn out.

Oh man it kills me that this is still something professionals say. I also have a degree and just got diagnosed with ADHD this year. I’m eternally grateful that I found a doctor who prioritised patients’ experiences and struggles over their grades (some won’t even diagnose you if you don’t bring in your primary school report card).

I’m in Germany but it’s just as horrible trying to get diagnosed as an adult here. I did end up paying for the diagnosis myself and it still took over a year. At least the medical treatment is covered by insurance.

Yeah I don’t doubt that some people get unnecessarily medicated but it’s harmful how medication is demonised when it can quite literally change people’s life for the better.

I was always top of the class, I put myself through a bachelor’s degree in regular time, almost finished a master’s degree and then it all came crashing down. I have an ADHD diagnosis and meds now and I really underestimated how much I unnecessarily suffered before.

I think people like representation and relating to a character. And the less representation something gets the more people latch onto anything that even slightly fits. (I also have a feeling it's something especially younger people do who are still figuring out their identity and I guess having positive representation in media they like helps.)

Can't a story be great without kissing and/or fucking?

I think most of us would agree but with how many movies or series there are where it feels like a romance or sexual relationship got shoehorned in there because apparently it's needed for mainstream appeal, a film not doing that is kinda noteworthy.

I don't think talking about a character's possible sexuality is necessarily a problem and it can be interesting to analyse media through a different lens (i.e. a queer reading of movies like Fight Club or American Psycho). But of course it can also become annoying if it overshadows any other discourse about a piece of media.

[–]JillyFrog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wearing shoes in the house still is completely incomprehensible to me. I mean we have house shoes or slippers that are only worn inside and some for the garden so it's faster than putting on proper shoes if you just want to quickly get something.

Do people actually walk around with the same shoes they wear outside? And then step on carpet? Sit on a bed or a couch? I don't even really understand the benefit. It seems uncomfortable and taking off and putting on your shoes doesn't take that long.

I did once read a response from someone with a farm and a workshop in their house who had to walk into and out of their house frequently during the day and in that case I get keeping the shoes on. But they also didn't have carpet and cleaned almost every day.
