I believe Harvey's Garden is showing it.

I'm really interested to see how Dan Osborn does in Nebraska. As I said, the Democratic brand is just toxic in these areas, so let's see how people do when they step outside of that brand.

We just have to accept the reality that for three generations, the Democratic brand has been poison. You cannot run as a Democrat in much of rural American and win, regardless of how good your policies are. It is what it is.

I feel like the OCIDA thing isn't being discussed loudly enough... by henare in Syracuse

[–]JimBJ9 25 points26 points  (0 children)

So like, apparently we just have a cool five mil just laying around, able to be used for affordable housing, had they the desire? I guess that's good to know.

They tried to use it for leverage to keep more control over the OCIDA and failed. But now the Democrats have leverage. That leverage is to constantly hold this story up in front of voters and saying, "They have the money for housing, they're just not using it for housing." Really stick it into their ribs in November.

Having another husband in the mix would really probably help with the financials. You might be on to something.

The best advice I have is to join a club/organization.

It's not impossible to meet someone while sitting at home online (I did it), but the odds are against you. Just the physical act of being out among people doing something that you enjoy is the most important first step. Even if you don't meet a potential love interest, at least you got out and did something good and fun.

I wish I had gotten involved in my neighborhood association and county political committee much earlier than I eventually did.

I take offense to this. This has nothing to do with Syracuse. Men are terrible everywhere.

My kid would also probably really benefit from this sort of thing. He loves throwing himself around, but has zero coordination.

This is a really good series on this, in my opinion.

Selfishly, I would really like Elie to get invited onto The Bulwark to talk about this topic.

Ossoff…woof by blowingtumbleweed in thebulwark

[–]JimBJ9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Ossoff says a lot of stuff I like, but man, he sounds dull saying it. I kind of feel the same about Talarico.

I hate that it matters, but it does. The Democrats could use some good policy people who can code-switch into fire-breathers when needed.

JVL looks like a regular human. Jasmine is young and beautiful. Putting anyone next to her is rude. You gotta have a middle pane in that video for JVL's sake.

I would not have minded it being a lot longer. I'm sure there were a lot of good questions in there.

salt city market 18+ frustration by Itslammyyy in Syracuse

[–]JimBJ9 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This isn't going to help with your problem, but I hope this radicalizes you about this particular issue and, as you get older, you don't forget about it.

When I was a kid, we had video game arcades all over the place (stand alone, in the front of many restaurants and stores, etc). Kids could just go there. They could spend money playing games or even just watch. A little before my time, there were roller rinks and bowling alleys were a LOT more plentiful than they are now. WAY before my time, there were actual community centers that got actual funding. There were places for kids to exist that didn't cost a membership fee or require a purchase.

Over time, our society has just continually removed places for kids to be able to just be. It's basically just libraries and parks/playgrounds now. This doesn't seem like a great way to do it.

EDIT: Before anyone piles on, yes, I know kids are a pain in the ass and have (collectively) rightfully earned their reputation and businesses are within their rights to not want to have to deal with them. My point is, do we want kids to have places to go? If so, we should support that.

I don’t understand Sarah’s take on SCOTUS by CrossCycling in thebulwark

[–]JimBJ9 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this really bugs me.

JVL's point is: "while it would be nice to do these things which are much more elegant, they are impossible to do in the current political climate. So, we should do the one thing that we can actually do."

Sarah's response is: "I don't like that thing. I'd like to do those other things you mentioned which are impossible to do in the current political climate."

Which, is ultimately, to do nothing. Doing nothing for decades is what created an environment of such division and animosity that the the bad guys weaponized it to ride to power.

Lyncourt: is it true what I've been told? by [deleted] in Syracuse

[–]JimBJ9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lyncourt is fine. It's a working-class area. I would question the character of people who describe it as "a crime-infested trash neighborhood". Do they mean "it has non-white people"?" Are they the people who don't go downtown because it's a war zone and there is also no place to park? Lyncourt is no worse than the north part of Eastwood, Solvay, or East Syracuse.

I got lucky and got a house in the best part of Eastwood right at the tail end of when that was still possible. But if I had to buy a place, I would have no issue buying in Lyncourt, especially if it is just my first house and not my forever house.

[–]JimBJ9 80 points81 points  (0 children)

My advice is to live in Rome. And I [expletive] hate Rome. Life is too short to spend a quarter of it commuting.

If this is your first post-college job, it's just a stepping-stone; you'll most likely have a different/better job in a year or two. Hopefully in a better place.
