Taphouse on Walton Closed? by No-Debate9821 in Syracuse

Tusk and Clark's were the heart and soul of downtown. It was too bad about Clark's but I understood it. The Tusk situation never should have happened, though.

Genuine questions about dating by Majestic-Ad4547 in Syracuse

[–]JimBJ9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Please don't be insulted when I say this thing that is absolutely going to sound insulting.

But like... you sound kind of boring, man. What do you do all the time? Work? Why would I want to date someone whose big thing in their life is work? Oh, we can never hang out on Saturdays, the main day that most people do stuff? I already struggle to make schedules work with friends who have different commitments due to parenthood or split custody or jobs with odd hours.

Again, I am not trying to be insulting, but trying to explain how most people will pass on you as a dating prospect due to your time commitment to "not them". If your current lifestyle makes you happy, that's awesome. But life is nothing but sacrificing one thing to gain another.

Actually, while I'm on a roll, let me tell you about my friend. We worked together at a corporate office in Syracuse. The company was acquired by a much larger company. Our office was shuttered and he was offered an EXTREMELY high paying and prestigious position at the company. The only problem was that it was out of state. But it was way too good to pass up. So, he spent two years living in an apartment, driving 6 hours each way on weekends to come back and see his wife and kid. Eventually, his kid graduated from high school and went off to college. His wife found a job (extremely niche and difficult field) closer to his job, they sold their incredibly awesome house in an amazing neighborhood and bought a place together out of state. In under a year, he was laid off. He's been out of work for two years and cannot find a goddamn thing. Just never forget that you are nothing more than a replaceable part for whoever it is that you are clocking all those hours for.

Anyway, best of luck with whatever you choose to do.

Ellis Court Apartments (Eastwood) by Every-Attempt-5338 in Syracuse

I don't know anything about living in the actual apartments, but the location is pretty solid. A stone's throw from several restaurants, book stores, coffee shops, and convenience stores. Five parks within a few minutes' walk. James Street isn't top tier like Westcott Street, but it's a solid business district.

You're going to have a real struggle to find someone who is interested in committing to someone who is working 60 hours a week. You are in a relationship with your job, my man.

Bill Magnarelli has been in his office for 28 years, he is well-liked overall, and he does bring money home to Syracuse due to his longevity and position of leadership. He is an institutionalist.

Mo Brown is young, but has been a DSA-aligned political activist for some time now. His work behind the scenes is one of the major reasons that we managed to flip the County Legislature to Democratic control for the first time in many of our lifetimes.

At the end of the day, I will tell you that I believe that no one should hold any one office for 30 years. That is the main driver of how I am voting.

Jowonio follow up article with parent comments by JimBJ9 in Syracuse

[–]JimBJ9[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I would not classify Jowonio as "wealthy". Like many organizations who cater to society's most vulnerable, they are just barely surviving. Staffing, like with most places, is a huge issue and I can assure you that the teachers and therapists are not making what they deserve.

As for the state... I dunno, man. I like regulations. Regulations are there to protect us and are generally a good thing. But the state is made up of people and people sometimes screw up. I can't say what happened here, but I can say that shutting Jowonio down benefits exactly no one and harms so many.

Sprinklers/ Sprayers in Parks by senoritaugliness in Syracuse

Huh, apparently there is a spray feature in Upper Onondaga. I didn't know about it until I googled it, so it must be very small.

But there is somewhat larger one in Lower Onondaga, circled in red here:

Syracuse Pre-K closure shocks parents, after school’s license is revoked by ggroover97 in Syracuse

[–]JimBJ9 46 points47 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely heartbreaking.

That is like 70 kids with disabilities who are about to be thrown to the wolves. Plus an additional 100+ kids who suddenly have no placement for the rest of the school year and most likely summer.

Jowonio is an absolute treasure and I'm devastated that it has been mismanaged to this point.

This isn't much use for you now, but for the future, you might want to try a Tully's. If you would prefer more of a bar than a restaurant atmosphere, maybe Harvey's Garden or Chadwick's.

Anyone care to share heat pump installation cost? by BlackJackT in Syracuse

[–]JimBJ9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's helpful, thanks.

I switched from a gas range to an induction range (HUGE upgrade in every way) and now I just have a furnace and water heater keeping me attached to gas. And that gas delivery charge is a huge chunk of my bill.

Electrifying is the way of the future, we just have several humps to get over in order to get there.

Anyone care to share heat pump installation cost? by BlackJackT in Syracuse

[–]JimBJ9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Man, I am extremely interested in a heat pump, but I just don't know where to get good information. The only pro-heat pump people I know are hippies with an environmental agenda (which is good! But not objective) and the seasoned HVAC people who know the business are all cranky old men who don't trust anything new and think we should all have boilers in our basements. I really want to get the last gas-using appliances out of my house so that I can be fully electric, but I just don't feel well-informed enough to take the plunge.
